Title: THE HOUSES OCTOBER BUILT (2014)
Post by: indianasmith on January 12, 2015, 11:43:31 PM
I saw a trailer for this movie last year and knew that it looked really creepy, so when I saw it at Hastings this evening, I jumped on it "like a chicken on a June bug" as we way in East Texas.

The plot was simple - five friends take off for the last week in October to find the creepiest, most intense, off-the-wall haunted house experiences that they can, and document their fun with hand held camcorders.  Imagine my surprise, then, when the very first place they visit on their travelogue was about 10 miles down the road from my house - The Haunt House in Caddo Mills, TX!!!  (To my chagrin, I must admit I've never gone through it!) I actually thought one of my former students was in the film, when I saw her name in the credits - but looking up the actress on FB, I found they were two different people with the same names.
Back to the story - so off our heroes go in search of the ultimate haunt!  Each place they visit is a little more intense and unplugged than the one before it, but they keep hearing rumors about a place that moves every year - a haunted house that offers scares so intense people have actually died going through it!  Needles to say, they are very eager to find this "white whale" of haunted houses.
Then weird stuff starts happening.  They begin to see some of the same costumed creeps at every haunt they stop at, particularly a terrifying little girl in doll makeup.  Then someone comes into their RV while they are camping and films them all sleeping and posts the video online.  There are strange sounds at night outside the RV, and costumed figures lurking about.  Finally, they get an invitation to New Orleans, where they can finally find there way to the place that now has a name . . . the Blue Skeleton.

This movie was delightfully creepy in its execution, and the ending was one of those that left you scratching your head and shuddering at the same time.  I'm pretty jaded on horror films, but this one may give me an uncomfortable night or two!  Definitely worth the rental!

4.5/5
