Title: Tutankhamun's beard glued back on
Post by: Newt on January 22, 2015, 08:41:53 AM

 - say Egyptian museum conservators.   The beard on the burial mask of the pharaoh was stuck on with epoxy after it was knocked off during cleaning, according to staff at Cairo museum.

In haste, apparently, and they used the wrong glue.  :bluesad:  It's like a scene out of a bad movie.  Or at least a bad comedy.  Inept custodian damages priceless artifact and fumbles around, attempting to repair it to avoid repercussions.

(At first I thought it was going to be an actual beard: that they had discovered the mummy had been 'enhanced'!  :tongueout: )

This reminds me of The Three Stooges replicating a priceless Chinese cabinet in "Slippery Silks".

They should've used duct tape instead. It's much more durable.

Is that made out of gold?  They could have just used a propane torch to weld it back together.

Heck, they could have used chewing gum and it would have been better! (I keep picturing the Three Stooges  or Jerry Lewis or Abbott and Costello doing it and ALL of them went for the chewing gum!   )

Hmm.  Might be a bit of overkill there.  From the sound of it, these guys might have managed to burn the place down around them while they were at it!

There are scratches on the chin now from where they tried to scrape the epoxy off.    :hatred:

Normally, such repairs are made with materials that can be safely removed without damage to the artifact.   Chewing gum would have been better!

We have this wonderful product in South Africa called either 'Prestik' or "Stikistuf': marvelous stuff, sticks to anything, even beards.

The only hassle with this is never to mistake it for chewing gum.  :buggedout:
