Title: Resident Evil: Damnation (2012)
Post by: akiratubo on March 03, 2015, 10:46:19 PM
Leon Kennedy goes to The Eastern Slav Republic, aka Absolutely Not Ukraine, to investigate reports of Bio-Organic Weapons being used there.  (In the video games, B.O.W.s are banned by international law and stuff).  He makes friends with a bunch of Ukrainians Slavs who kidnap him, and finds out they are using the B.O.W.s known as Lickers as their last-resort weapon against the tyrannical government regime headed by an evil woman named Svetlana.  Series anti-hero and Leon's sort-of love interest Ada Wong meets with Svetlana in an attempt to secure a sample of the super-B.O.W. strain her scientists have bred.

Anyway, enough of that stupid plot stuff.  Time for ass-kicking!

Leon and his friends kick some zombies' asses.  Then they go to another location to kick more zombies' asses.  The one Ukrainian Slav who's been nice to Leon lets him go so that he can stop, uh, something bad from happening to someone.  I don't know, I wasn't paying that much attention.  Leon kicks some ass.  He meets with Ada and they engage in foreplay, which involves them kicking each other's assess.  Ada gets in a fight with Svetlana, who proves very capable at kicking ass.  Ada is captured.  She escapes.  Leon meets up with her.  They are surrounded by soldiers, and kick their asses.  One of Leon's buddies, the kind-of evil one, shows up with Lickers under his control.  The Lickers kick Svetlana's troops' asses.  Svetlana unleashes two Tyrants (basically giants in SS longcoats) who kick the Lickers' asses.  Ada escapes or something, so Leon has to team up with his buddy, whose name I think actually is "Buddy", to escape the underground laboratory.  Once outside, they fight another Tyrant, who goes all super-saiyan on them, so they have to fight it with a tank.  The Tyrant almost kicks the tank's ass before Leon manages to shoot its head off.  The other two Tyrants have by now made it to the surface.  Not having any more tanks on hand, Leon and Buddy have to flee.  Fortunately, the U.S. and Russian militaries show up to kick the Tyrants' asses.  Buddy is all like, "Oh, boo hoo, I have nothing to live for.  Leon, kill me."  Leon's replies, "No!  We must learn to love life, even if we don't have our limbs!" and shoots him in the spine instead. (!!!)  This causes Buddy to appreciate life again (!!!), and he climbs into a wheelchair and rolls down the street while watching little kids chase balloons.  (!!!)  Meanwhile, Ada contacts the buyer for the super-B.O.W. virus and tells him it's too dangerous, so she won't be selling it after all.

This is one of the best action flicks I've seen in a long time.  There's just enough setup that you know who people are and what they're doing, then it's 100% ass-kicking until the end credits.  The action scenes are fun and choreographed so that (gasp) you can tell what's going on!  The action sequences also exploit fully the abilities of the various monsters involved in them.

The best thing, however, about Resident Evil: Damnation is that is really is Resident Evil.  The god-awful series kicked off by Paul W.S. Anderson is more like a series of Resident Evil fanfics starring somebody's super-cool ultra-badass original character (do not steal) with a few "reinterpretations" of the game characters playing second or third banana.  Damnation has characters from the games, staying true to their characterizations in the games, in situations just like the games, who are even voiced by the same actors as in the games.  I can't tell you how glad I was to hear Matthew Mercer, Courtenay Taylor, and Salli Saffioti voicing their usual characters, plus familiar voices like Wendee Lee in supporting roles.

It's true that a non-fan of the games might not get as much out of this movie but, if you're in the mood for an action flick, there are worse ways to kill 100 minutes.

Personally I like to forget any Resident Evil movie a part of the first trilogy... Is there anything worthwhile after?

These CGI direct to video movies actually ARE canon with the RE games.  The one made before this one Degeneration introduces several names that will show up in the video games

They are all about the same.  If you didn't like the first couple, you won't like any of the others.

Are you telling me RE games have enough plot for anything to be considered canon?   :bouncegiggle:
