Title: The Corpse Vanishes (1942)
Post by: akiratubo on April 25, 2015, 11:31:43 PM
Society brides keep dropping dead on their wedding days.  Three have died so far, and the police promise bride #4 protection.  Well, it doesn't amount to much.  How could it, when the villain of the movie is a Mad Scientist played by Bela Lugosi?  Bela does have a little trouble securing her (apparent) corpse.  The hearse he uses to hijack the chick's coffin is pulled over and searched by police.  Ever resourceful, Bela merely climbs into the coffin on top of the poor, unconscious bride and passes himself off as the corpse!

Once he finally gets home, Bela does some Mad Science on the girl's body while his wife watches, commanding him to HURRY!  HURRY!  SHE'S SUFFERING SO MUCH!  HOW CAN HE BE ALLOWING THIS HAPPEN!  THE PAIN IS SO GREAT!   RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!  Elizabeth Russel, who plays Bela's wife (and also had small roles in several of Val Lewton's RKO horror flicks around the same time), manages to steal this scene right out from under Bela.  Quite a feat!  Her performance is so over the top she's almost like a damn neutron bomb going off right in the middle of the movie.  Anyway, Bela extracts some fluid from the bride, which he then injects into his wife.  She becomes young again.

While the couple is celebrating, one of Bela's servants, a retarded hulk named Angel, begins to fondle the unconscious bride.  Bela grabs a whip that just happens to be there and lashes the poor fellow to ribbons.  Angel's mother bemoans his very existence.  "Oh!  Why did my poor son even have to be born!"  Pay attention to what the characters say about Angel over the course of the movie.  It has to be an accident but, I swear, they make it sound like Angel's (never seen) father isn't even a human being but some kind of eldritch monstrosity straight out of Lovecraft.  It's extremely weird.

Meanwhile, a reporter named Patricia, who has been covering the case, makes a discovery: the poisoned flower Bela had delivered to the bride right before she walked down the aisle.  Patricia has trouble identifying the type of flower it is.  Bela's character turns out to be an expert on rare flowers, so she decides to go see if he can offer her some help.  Well, of course not, but maybe Patricia can help him.  Bela's wife is about to need another injection of Beautiful Young Girl Secretion, after all ...

The Corpse Vanishes is one hilariously weird movie.  Every single aspect of it is just a little (sometimes a lot) off.  What I went over above doesn't even begin to cover it.  Bela is obviously having the time of his life here.  He probably enjoyed leaving the heavy scene chewing to someone else and getting to underplay it for a change.  Hell, everyone in this movie is having a great time, which makes it easy for the viewer to have a great time watching them.

You owe it to yourselves to see the movie.  Now.  Whatever you were doing before can wait.
