Title: MONSTERS: DARK CONTINENT (2014)
Post by: indianasmith on June 03, 2015, 04:24:33 PM
This movie is a sequel to the critically acclaimed MONSTERS from about 3 years ago.  It's a hard movie to pin down - it's like a mash-up of AMERICAN SNIPER and SAVING PRIVATE RYAN blended with PACIFIC RIM.

Four best friends from the ghettos of Detroit join the army together to help exterminate an infestation of monsters that has broken out in an unspecified Middle Eastern country.  The monsters can be destroyed by bombs and shelling, but since they seem to be drawn to settled areas, there is a lot of collateral damage and a strong insurgency has taken root, trying to drive out the American invaders. Our heroes are tested in combat and many don't make it through as they navigate the dangers of alien enemies and angry Arabs.

The monsters are the coolest thing in this movie.  Beautifully integrated into the film with seamless CGI effects, they are more of a plot device than a focal point.  The movie is a bit long, but the story is very interesting. 4/5
