Title: BAD TV !!
Post by: Allhallowsday on September 13, 2015, 11:38:26 PM
BAD  TV !!
I'm majorly into my BAD movies... so much so that I look at BAD TV too... Never really thought about it... I mean in the right context... and I don't look at a lot of TV.  I was once again watching a BAD two-part "The Love Boat" (yes, "The Love Boat" this one from 1979) with a stunning cast like... RAYMOND BURR CHRISTOPHER GEORGE KIM DARBY JOHN RUBINSTEIN ... STOOPID plot AND stoopid dialogue.  I've always hated that show.   Now I'm watching it.  I am stunned by the casts... I think I mentioned a fraction of the actors in this two parter sh!t.
I think I'm starting to love it.   :teddyr:  "The Love Boat" is so BAD.   :drink: :bouncegiggle:

Did I mention MICHAEL COLE (in a wheelchair)? (Again, yes again).

I used to really like that show too, it's light entertainment at its lightest  :bouncegiggle:

Lately I've been watching Jason of Star Command, that live-action kids show from 1978.  Cheesy as can possibly be imagined, with Sid Haig as the bad guy

Grew up watching Knight Rider, the A-Team, the Greatest American Hero, the Dukes of Hazzard, The Incredible Hulk, MacGyver, the Love Boat, Magnum P.I. which I enjoyed a great deal back then but I have to admit some of them were pretty bad shows at times. That said, I'd take any of 'em over most modern day reality TV shows. What about shows like Manimal and Automan? I loved Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future animated show too. By today's FX standards, that would probably be considered pretty bad. Back then, it was cutting edge. In the 90s I enjoyed stuff like Thunder in Paradise and Sweating Bullets too.

Bad television programs... Can name you just about as many of those as I can movies.

Out of the many I've seen, my top B-Rated TV picks would be:

SUPERHUMAN BAROM 1: Two children are given a device, called the "Bop", by an alien wizard, called "Kopu", that allows them to turn into a superhero called "Barom 1" (the device also has many other abilities, but that's the main one). After Kopu suffers a random case of self-combustion, it is up to the kids (Barom 1) to save Japan from a shadow alien, with horns, called "Doruge", and his army of fingerprint men, animal-based demons, plant-based demons, fungus-based demons, and even body part-based demons!

DIAMOND EYE: WARRIOR OF LIGHT: A news reporter tracks down a gem stolen by gem thieves. The news reporter gets in big trouble with these thieves, and a superhero, called "Diamond Eye" appears from a stolen diamond ring, and reveals the thieves to be members of a monster group, called the "Zensei Majin". Diamond Eye entrusts the ring in the news reporter, so that any time he is in danger, Diamond Eye would appear to save him.

ULTRAMAN ACE: The next "Ultra" in the series must fight against an alien called "Yapool", and his army of object and animal-based monsters! Including a hot-air balloon, a pigeon, a swimming pool, a salamander, a violin, a cactus, and more! But these monsters are no ordinary "Kaiju". They are stronger creatures, called "Choju". However, they seem to have a hard time avoiding decapitation, or being brutally (but cheesily) ripped apart in some other fashion.

ASSAULT! ARMOR JACK!: A Japanese toy company, Amapro's sad attempt at making a tokusatsu with their character, Armor Jack. It seems to have no plot, the budget was probably less than $1000, each of the only three episodes is about only 2:30 long, and the monsters look like fast-food restaurant mascots. The recurring theme in the only three episodes is two monsters fighting each other, and then Armor Jack appear to stab them both. It's probably one of the worst tokusatsus ever made.

MACHAAKI MAETAKE HAJIMARU YO! Nobody has told me a fully translated title for this one, so I'm just using the name it is most commonly addressed by Americans (it's the second Japanese name, written with the English alphabet). Anyways, it's a variety show where the actors have their monsters brawl for... I guess competition purposes or something. One of the actors also teaches calligraphy. I've actually never seen this show, but the images I've seen of the monsters look pretty hokey.

Yeah, I know, most of my picks were mainly tokusatsu, and that's because they are cheesy, and I love them.

I've literally watched all 22 seasons of Power Rangers.  In fact, I own the first 17 seasons on DVD.  It's got it's charms to it.

Well with no Adobe Flash Player working I can't look at embedded, but, "The Love Boat" takes the cake as far as amazing casts with sorry story lines.  Soggy story lines.  It's so bad I like it.

I love Love Boat just because it is so bad.... I have wondered more than once what the guest stars thought when they got the scripts and how much the tv studio had to blackmail them into doing the shows.

How about FANTASY ISLAND?

I thought that show was totally cool as a teen, but watching it on TV land, it's so bad my brain wants to leak out my ears!

Used to love watching that one and have often thought I'd like to see it again sometime.

On the subject of TV shows, I was bought a DVD recently of a cartoon called The Ghost Busters (which throughout makes quite some effort towards accentuating the space between Ghost & Busters). It turns out this was originally an old TV show (and the reason a certain other cartoon ended up being called The Real Ghostbusters). Kristi expressed an interest in looking up the show and I just wondered if anyone here had seen it, or knew where I could get it?

I remember that cartoon - it predated the Bill Murray movie by ten years or more - one of the actors wore a gorilla suit, and I think it was called SPENCER, TRACY, AND KONG: GHOST BUSTERS.

Yes! I saw it a long while back. I remember the episode where they had to stop a hooded monster who was making everyone's dreams appear in reality. It was an interesting and bizarre series, and to be honest, I fairly enjoyed it. I'm not much of a cartoon person (at least, I don't really care for any of the modern cartoons, except for The Simpsons), but it wasn't bad.

Here are some videos on my top picks for bad TV:

Warrior of Light Diamond Eye (also known as "Diamond Eye: Warrior of Light" or just "Diamond Eye":
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x3dunf6 (http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x3dunf6)

A news reporter and his buddy, Diamond Eye who is just a silly looking hero encased in a diamond look for gangsters that are really goofy looking monsters in disguise. The monsters include a turtle-beetle with a tentacle tail, a heavily deformed troll, a lizard cat, and much more! Definitely a very exciting show, with a deceiving price. What do I mean? On Amazon Japan, you can find the complete DVD set for $500+! But, if you scroll down you can just buy the volumes separately for a much cheaper price.

Superhuman Barom 1:
! No longer available (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=40p5ZF8oCLI#)

How can something so silly take itself so seriously? This show is about two boys that are given a device by an alien wizard, named Kopu. The device is called the "Bop" (not kidding), and they must fight the alien shadow man Doruge and all of his silly creature or body-part based monsters! Truly a B-Rated masterpiece!

White Lion Mask:
! No longer available (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HfL57f6trco#)

This is by far the definition of a "hoot". Some guy who can transform into the bizarre looking hero must fight a silly looking thing called the "Infernal Devil" and fight against his yokai-based minions (the costumes are just people with monster masks, for the most part).

Batman:
! No longer available (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpoxHvmWPfc#)

The completely buff, strong, and menacing (sarcasm alert) DC heroes must save Gotham from more devious crooks! The silliness is just so funny, and the variety of villains is a crackup. Even better, the villains are played by famous actors, like Vincent Price as Egghead, and much more! And if you have the IFC channel, it comes on every Saturday morning!

Assault! Armor Jack!:
http://nicoviewer.net/sm160878 (http://nicoviewer.net/sm160878)

This has to be the most low-budget tokusatsu I've ever seen in my life. The three-episode show was meant to promote an ambitious toy company name Amapro's characters. The entire show is just two monster getting into conflict, and then the hero, Armor Jack steps in and kills them all.

Ultraman Ace:
! No longer available (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sR7KQAOn0pU#)

My favorite Ultraman show because of the monsters summoned by the alien, Yapool! From swimming pools, to balloons, to pigeons, to urine-stained beds as monsters!

Monster Prince:
! No longer available (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tTbJY5PFaLA#)

Silly low-budget show about a kid who is friends with dinosaurs, particularly a brontosaurus. They adventure in a land of dinosaurs and get in a whole lot of trouble!

Doctor Who (I mean the old ones! Calm down!)
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x28z90e_the-dominators-pt-2_shortfilms (http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x28z90e_the-dominators-pt-2_shortfilms)

The new Doctor Who shows are genius and well-written. The older ones are... well, quite B-Rated if I might say. Including this episode, with the little spiky robot guys.

Fireball XL5
! No longer available (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=83yku222hBI#)

Fun show, around the time of Space Patrol (a similar show) where the crew of a spaceship are entirely puppets. It's just quirky, old and cheesy.

Godzilla Island
! No longer available (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6E6t37NRfN8#)

This is basically a TV show made with kaiju figures. It's a Godzilla show, but all the characters are figures as opposed to the actual rubber suits that we all know and love.

SUPERTRAIN!  One of the all-time most infamous flops.  1979, NBC; only lasted nine episodes!
! No longer available (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9n1FMEruSM#)

An awful cartoon:
STUNT DAWGS (1992-92)
Awful, obnoxious cartoon involving stunt vehicles driven by both heroes and villains.
! No longer available (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6e45g9wj6vw#)

One of the more botched comics-to-cartoon adaptations (mostly due to the bad voice acting):
AVENGERS: UNITED THEY STAND (1999-2000)
! No longer available (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BExZpfWrwLI#)

As a bonus:
NBC did a spoof of their "Proud as a peacock" campaign when their ratings were awful in the early 80s under Fred Silverman.

We're loud!  Uh huh, say it again, NBC
We're loud!  We're in last place
Loud!  We're gonna fall right on our face
Loud!  Since Freddy came our ratings always stayed the same
An 18 rating, a 14 share
Bet you wonder if we care
No!  We're just proud to be, NBC
We're loud!  We're living in the past
Loud!  The bottom's dropping out we're
Proud!  Of our 40 shows, just watch our shares go up your nose
We don't care, it's all there
NBC is always there, we're not just proud to be, we're also loud
We're loud!  We're louder than the rest
So loud!  It doesn't matter, we're not the best
Loud!  We're gonna screw around and run this network in the ground
The peacock's dead so thank you Fred
Yeah, thanks a whole lot
NBC, proud as a peacock!

Listen my dear friend: "Gilligan's Island" is bad.  Really bad.  Bad can be good, as in my first example "The Love Boat".  I don't like it at all, never did, but, for a moment there I was tuning into these two-parter episodes and had a blast naming the huge casts, responding to the STOOPID dialogue or setups.  That show's dumb... like "Gilligan"

Certain flicks can be considered good or bad, depending on the viewer's opinion. I respect both of your opinions. The definition of a B-Rated flick comes within the viewer's opinion. So, the answer to Gilligan's Island: Good or bad is all up to the viewers' opinions. I don't think there's really a definitive answer to that one. Personally, I'd call it B-Rated but I still enjoyed it. I wouldn't call it "bad" as in bad bad. B-Rated bad, however.

Here are three honorably b-rated mentions:

Breadwinners: Make the awful singing stop....

The Starlost: Bad Canadian ripoff of Star Trek.

The Adventures of Paddy the Pelican: It's all voiced by one guy, they forgot to color anything in, and the voice syncing is phenomenal. 10/10

I certainly agree with both of those statements!

Storage Wars: Meh, probably staged.

Honey Boo Boo: Please kill me.

Duck Dynasty: A "reality" show about rich people who look like redneck cannibals.

Every time I hear the words "reality show", I think of this:

No, truly bad (like, awful bad) films (in my opinion) are something like The Greenhouse, Humanoids from the Deep, or something like that. I absolutely hated those two. And I've seen worse, those are just examples. The 80s ones are the worst for me.

There was an early 70s show that made  Gilligan's Island look like Shakespeare: the you-gotta-see-it-to-believe-it Dusty's Trail.

Goofy assistant trail scout Dusty (Bob Denver) manages to get part of a wagon train hopelessly lost on the way to the Wild West, much to the dismay of the Wagon Master (Alan Hale, Jr. Forrest Tucker). The lost pioneers include: a wealthy banker and his wife, a dance hall girl, a school teacher, and a sweet farm girl. The average script would have prompted a disgusted walk out on the set of Gilligan's Island.

I watched every episode when I was a kid and thought it was hilarious.

Here's an episode with a GORILLA!!!

I haven't seen the original show Dusty's Trails but I did see the film version The Wackiest Wagon Train in the West which was gaddawful! Yeah, it's basically a sub-par version of Gilligan's Island goes west.

Imo - If I had to list a show that I would class as BAD - that would be...

MASH... why? I didn't like it - I know others love it though, my mom loves it.
...
"M*A*S*H*" was a good show, not a great show, which I watched decades ago in reruns and also remember it's original run and too much preaching and proselytizing.  I recently sat through a few weeks of reruns, long before I watched them dreadful "The Love Boat" two-parters (though that channel these days is all "Hunter" or "Commish".  Ugh).  Anyway, the parts I like turned up now and then.  I can definitely see where one would not like it.

I remember there being some sort of modern remake of Looney Tunes that was terrible. Bad voice actors, and the show in of itself was just stupid. It was like another one of those modern teenage drama cartoons, but with Looney Tunes characters.

Classic hilarity..
CARTOON ALL-STARS TO THE RESCUE!
Well, it wasn't a series, but an animated special, with cartoon "celebrities" like Garfield, Alvin and The Chipmunks, Bugs Bunny, Muppet Babies, ALF and others trying to teach kids about the dangers of drugs.  Awesomely stupid!

Holy crap, Batman! That sucks!!

MR. SMITH (1983)
Some brainiac concocted this idea for a series concerning a talking orangutan as a political advisor.  Just a small promo/dial-in clip exists.  Damn shame. :P

All items below are rated 5/5.

DIAMOND EYE (1973)
A hilarious show, with costumes (not just the monster costumes, the human ones as well) that look like they came from a prop-room raid, dopey monsters, overly dramatic acting, very dramatic zoom-in zoom-out shots, and of course, the goofy expressionless hero with a cane that's just a doorknob on a stick and it has a diamond on the end. Oh, and according to the theme song translated to English, the titular hero comes from Arabia....

The show's about a news reporter named "Rai Kotaru" who goes after a gang of mobsters who are trying to steal a bunch of gems. I don't know why he went after them, but he did and got caught in the act. But not to worry, as one of the diamonds, called "The King of Arabia" flies into the air and the titular hero appears to the rescue and shoots his Inner-Soul Illumination Beam (yes, that's what it's called) at the mobsters, to reveal their true forms, the monster gang, Zensei Majin! And so Rai and Eye must venture out to stop the monster gang because... I don't really know, they're evil or something.

This show may be rare, but if you can find it, it's totally worth it! However, it could do without the cheesy dramatic dialog that goes on for about five minutes, but the fun is worth it!

SUPERHUMAN BAROM 1 (1972)
Diamond Eye's cool and all, but Barom 1 is just the best! Diamond Eye always has to use his dumb cane to have any fighting power at all - But not Barom 1, he just punches and kicks his foes. In fact, his finisher is a mid-air punch in the face. The hero faces tons of wacky animal, fungus, plant, and even body part based monsters!

The show is about two kids who are attacked by a group of monsters, and is given a device called the "Bop" by a young person with a fake white wig and beard, who's name is "Kopu". The Bop is used to detect nearby demons and to transform the two into Barom 1! However, the Bop only works when they are not mad at each other. When they're Barom 1, the Bop can be used as a throwing projectile, or it can create his own special flying car, called the "Mach Rod". So the kids, along with their uncle "Matsogi" set out to stop the monster Doruge (who's basically a shadow-creature with big horns and glowing eyes) and his bizarre but hilarious minions!

This show is just the best. The monsters are great, each and every scene is entertaining, there's always something exciting happening, and it's full of action! Definitely a must-see for any B-Movie lover!

BATMAN (1966)
You guys just know that this had to be on here! It's a true classic, and the absolute greatest thing to ever feature Batman! It's basically Diamond Eye, but with less monster, more English, and way more episodes! Also a lot more action.

I don't feel like explaining the plot is necessary, because I assume most people know already because what else could Batman possibly do? Batman and Robin try to snatch hilarious crooks! What more do you want? Great actors, hilarious fights, tons of balsa props. There's even a giant clam, in one of the episodes!

It has every B-Movie requirement, even a movie as well, in case you aren't a TV person! Wow! Just, amazing!

SPIDER-MAN (1977)
If you wanted a comic book character to be mixed with some sort of Power Ranger, as well as fighting kaiju, then this is the show for you! Personally, I'm not a Spiderman person, but I love this show! Fun monster, the giant robot, what more could you seriously ask for? Just go watch it. Right now.

I was never a fan of this show, but Tracy is, so she (we) watch it on MeTV; they're showing the final season, which is so wretched, it's nearly camp....

This really stunk up tv screens in the 80's, a wretched remake of a classic 60's cartoon....
