Title: The Puppet Master Collection
Post by: Gabriel Knight on March 07, 2016, 06:20:55 PM
Hi fellas!
I remember watching the original Puppet Master as a kid, and it freaked me out. It was probably one of the scariest movie i've ever seen, and those stopmotion effects were awesome. Now i wanted to enjoy it again but also to know everything about Toulon and his creations, so i decided to watch them all in chronological order instead of release date, therefore i started with Retro Puppet Master. The pain that movie caused me was intense, so i'll try to write a capsule review for each one in order to prevent more sorrow to the rest of the world. :tongueout:
So then, let us begin...

RETRO PUPPET MASTER
1999, directed by David DeCoteau.

THE CAST

André Toulon: he obtains the Secret of Life and eventually uses it to animate his puppets, providing him with tools to destroy the killers of his friends. He's probably one of the worst actors ever in existence - worse than the "oh my god" kid in Troll 2.
Ilsa: one of the few redeemable qualities of this disaster. First, the actress Brigitta Dau is hella cute and brings something nice to watch for a change; and second, she's pretty much the only one who can actually act.
Afzel: an ancient wizard who stole the Secret of Life from the god Sutekh. While the character is somewhat cool and the actor is forgivable, it seems totally out of place in the movie. It would've been better if Toulon just found out the secret in a hidden archive or something intead of this mess IMO.
Servants of Sutekh: three mummies that came alive to recover the Secret of Life. For some reason they like to repeat the same lines three times, p**sing off enemies and viewers alike.

THE PLOT

The movie starts with old Toulon talking to his puppets, and after finding the broken head of Cyclops he decides to tell them the story of how they came alive. At first we see the wizard Afzel stealing the Secret of Life and getting away with it, while the god Sutekh put his minions on the chase; then, we flashback to a younger point of Toulon's life in France, in which he had no facial expressions and the same voice all the time, no matter how upset or happy he were.
So we're now seeing his future wife Ilsa trying to get away and have some fun, and somehow she ends up in the theatre. Watching the puppet show of André and his mates she immediately falls in love with the french performer, and tries to get closer to him after a romantic situation in which they found a beaten up old man and drag him inside.
Later, the old guy wakes up and reveals himself to André as an immortal fella who knows stuff. His first proof is moving the puppets with his fingers from across the room, which puts André in a face -slightly- different from the rest of the film (i think he open his eyes a little more). Then, they discover the dead body of a beggar outside and take it to the room to perform some tricks on him. With a magic ring that apparentely has no special powers, they take out the blood from the back of his head and insert it in a puppet, which after some powerwords it comes alive, and it actually nods and things like that.

On a personal note: i can't express enough how dissapointed i was to see those awful effects of dolls running around with strings (like puppets, he), and not the stopmotion of old. It really takes away a lot of charm. And another thing: the puppets are not the same of the other movies, instead they have "retro" styles, with more wood and paint. They look terrible, i'm sorry, Blade doesn't have that creepy face and Pin Head doesn't have a head the size of a pin. :hatred:
This may seem like a minor inconvenience but let's face it, we all watch this movies because of the puppets. They're the stars, and if they look like crap and move like someone is pulling them around the overall experience is just lame.

Back to the movie: the mummies finally get Afzel down, along with four of André friends. When he returns home he goes on a rampage (he puts his hands on his face in sadness) and uses the dead bodies of his pals to bring more puppets alive. Now with his tiny army he goes to find his enemies, but they find him first. After a fierce battle the mummies get crushed by a chandelier and André escapes, but Sutekh gives them moar powa to keep on going. With this new trick, they capture Ilsa and send a dream to André so they can inform him that they have her... inside a train? That really didn't make any sense. So anyways, our hero goes to the train and unleash his wooden terrors upon the servants of the god, destroying them and saving his lover.
The last scene of the movie is again old Toulon talking to his puppets, and promising them another story.

tl;dr: this is probably one of the most boring movies i've ever seen. It has no sense at all, terribad acting, no effects, no suspense and certainly no horror, boring music, boring scenery, and it just sucks overall. I would give it a skull but Ilsa is just too damn pretty, so final score: one slime.

THINGS I'VE LEARNED WITH THIS MOVIE

* A mummy filled with sand has lungs.
* If something doesn't die by shooting and stabing it many times, try choking it or dropping a chandelier on it.
* In France, the wildest place at midnight is the theater.
* After calling a carriage, it arrives exactly in 45 seconds.
* When you're in a train, watching puppets walk by themselves its normal.
* If an assassin comes to your house, reality goes in slow motion.

Next time: Puppet Master III, Toulon's Revenge!

I absolutely loved the original Puppet Master movie. It was very well done, with very few indications that it was a low budget flick: the acting was good, the story worked, and the effects were, for the most part, excellent. The sequels, not so much. And by the fourth sequel, they had devolved into a group of model wannabes spouting horrible dialog in ridiculous situations. Shame. I look forward to your reviews on these movies.

Yesterday i watched Puppet Master III and i have to say, it's a breath of fresh air to watch such a fun and well made movie, specially after the crapfest that was Retro Puppet Master. The story is coherent and it actually has a plot, the puppets are there with their delightful stopmotion effects and we even have background stories for them; also the actors are great, specially Toulon.
It's hard to imagine that this movie was actually directed by the same guy of Retro Puppet Master, not only because they're totally different, but also because this one came eight years before and it's vastly superior. Well, anyways, let's talk about it...

PUPPET MASTER III: TOULON'S REVENGE
1991, directed by David DeCoteau

THE CAST

André Toulon: Portrayed by Guy Rolfe, who also appeared as the older Toulon in Retro Puppet Master (and in other sequels too!). The charismatic and wise master of puppets is living peacefully in Berlin until the nazi kill his wife, an event that changes him and puts him in a vengeful rampage.
Elsa Toulon: André's wife, she gets shot by a nazi soldier and then executed by Major Kraus. I've noticed that in Retro Puppet Master she is mentioned as Ilsa in the credits, but here her name is Elsa; i believe that's the real name of the character, and that Ilsa is just another f**k-up of Retro Puppet Master.
Major Kraus: The bad guy of the movie, he commands a project to build an army of zombies. Get's transformed into a real life puppet by Toulon and his friends.
Eric Stein: Ass licker soldier that serves as a snitch. Gets smashed by Pin Head and then leeched to death by Leech Woman.
Doctor Hess: The doc in charge of the zombie operation. He's impressed by Toulon's genius and wants to become his friend so they can work together. Get's stabed by a nazi soldier.
General Mueller: Man in charge of the operation and prostitute lover. Shot many times by Six Shooter.
The Puppets: In this movie we have Pinhead, Jester, Six Shooter and Tunneller. Eventually Leech Woman joins them, with Elsa's essence stored on it. We can also watch the creation of Blade and, while we can't really see it, i assume it has Hess's essence inside.

THE PLOT

I'll try to avoid the many plot holes that this saga has, like the wrong dates of events or past experiences. For example, Toulon telling Hess that he obtained the secret 15 years ago in Egypt with Elsa, when in a future movie they tell a completely different story. Now that i got that out of the way, let's talk about Toulon's Revenge...
It's 1941 in Berlin and we see a secret project to create an army of zombies from dead soldiers, but the only thing they manage to get is a raging cadaver that destroy everything in his path, useless for their plans. We move then to a puppet show performed by our hero André, where the sneaky lieutenant Stein is taking pictures of Six Shooter, who manages to move without strings, and also of the other doll of... Hitler (that's not very smart, my dear André). Trying to learn more, he approaches Toulon with the excuse of his own passion for puppets, but in reality he scares the couple with warnings about the satiric show about the Führer. After he leaves, the puppet master starts to feed his children with needles and a strange green liquid, but little he knows that Stein is taking pictures of the situation from outside the window.

With this new evidence, the lieutenant goes to Krauss and informs what he saw. Hess goes all crazy and wants to meet with the puppet master, but the Major has other plans. They go to Toulon's house and once in there s**t goes wrong, Elsa gets shot and André is taken to a car with Pinhead and Tunneller in his arms. The puppets, having witnessed the death of Elsa, take the matter on their own hands: Pinhead strangulate one of the soldiers inside the car, and Tunneller improvise a tunnel on the driver. With his freedom regained, André goes into hiding and, overcomed by sorrow, promises to himself and his puppets to get revenge... by any means necessary.
With the help of Jester and Pinhead, he infiltrates the morgue where they have the body of Elsa, and obtains her essence to create Leech Woman; this is an awesome point of the movie because it gives us the background of the puppets and provides them with unique personalities. Also, Toulon creates Blade with a ressemblance of Kraus, and while i haven't looked it up, the original puppet already had that face in 1989 so i guess they had to find an actor who actually looks like the puppet. That... is just epic. I mean, if this is true, then the dolls are more important than the actors themselves. :teddyr:
And you know what's also brilliant? When the movie started and Kraus made his first appearence, i thought "Hey, he looks a lot like Blade!". I can't explain what a pleasant surprise i had an hour after!

Anyways, back to the movie...
Toulon keeps going in a killing spree using a disguise, and take down Stein with brute force from Pinhead and a lot of leeches coming out of Leech Woman's mouth. After his deed he goes back into his hiding, where he then plans the death of Mueller. Taking advantage of the general's usual close-up inspection of prostitutes, he send Six Shooter to six-shoot him.
Back on his lair, Toulon finds out that he has company: a father and son that are also runnnig away from da police. The kid, named Peter, is all excited by the living puppets and become André's assistant. His first task is going back to the workshop in order to find more pieces to repair the puppets, but he gets captured by Hess, who was inspecting the place after finding one of Six Shooter's arms which fell during the gunfight. He finally convince Peter to show him the hideout, and pays a visit to Toulon. They become friends, as the doctor admires the work of the puppeteer and wants to seek knowledge.
But Peter's father, knowing about the big reward on Toulon's head, make a deal with Kraus so he can save his son and wife, also captured by the nazi. They all go into the place of hiding and again everything goes wrong: the father gets killed and Hess gets stabbed by a soldier. Toulon then prepares his last move...
With the help of his puppets he gets inside Kraus's office and kills him in a creative way. First, Jester cuts the phone cable, laughing at the man foolishness. Then, the newly created Blade shows up and cuts him in the leg and hand, making him fall to the ground, after which Pinhead stick four hooks on him and Toulon raises him as a real life puppet. The strong puppet then puts an axe under him and Toulon burns the rope, making Kraus fall on the sharp weapon and effectively ending his life. The movie ends with André travelling alongside his new assistant Peter, using Kraus's passport, and we see his wanted poster getting blown away by the wind.

As i said before, this is a very entertaining movie and while it's not really horror (one doesn't get scared when the bad guys die, right?), it has a lot of moments of suspense and some gore too; also, the actors are very good and they're really into their characters. The effects are amazing and you'll love all the puppets, specially Jester - he's awesome. The theme music from the starting credits is a creepy circus tune which sounds excellent, and the overall scenary is well done and stylish. Final score: four slimes!

THINGS I LEARNED FROM THIS MOVIE

* If you're a wounded jew and a nazi is pointing you with a gun, don't spit him.
* You can never have enough prostitutes.
* Making a show mocking Hitler in Berlin, in 1941, isn't a smart thing to do.
* Leeches are so deadly that you know is futile to even try to remove them from your face.
* A bullet the size of a peanut can do the same damage than a shotgun.
* If you love a woman and she dies, the best thing to do for her is to store her soul in a doll.

STUFF TO WATCH FOR

15 mins: "What is it? I'm in the middle of a meeting!"
17 mins: RANDOM GRATUITOUS BREAST SHOT!
39 mins: RANDOM ACT OF VIOLENCE AGAINST A BUNCH OF JARS!
42 mins: Yeah, right. We've seen your meetings already, General!
43 mins: Ha, i knew it!
43 mins: RANDOM GRATUITOUS BREAST SHOT!
58 mins: Because we all know soldiers obey doctors without hesitate.
66 mins: Damn, how many of those she has inside?

I hope you enjoyed my review and convinced you to not miss this great movie. :teddyr:
But after this one let's get into a more recent territory, as recent as 2010... next one is Puppet Master: Axis of Evil!

I'm kind of amazed David DeCoteau made Puppet Master III.  It's miles ahead of every other film of his I've seen, including the other Puppet Master films he did.

To help with the chronological thing: I think the series works best with (the Axis movies, then) Puppet Master, Puppet Master II, Curse of the Puppet Master (since they left the Inn in the end of Part 2 and are in another location in Curse), Puppet Master 4 & 5, Legacy, vs. Demonic Toys

I've actually got a pretty cool PDF in which there's an explanation of all the terribad chronological mistakes, along with the "correct" order of the movies if you want to watch them following the timeline - which is the one i'm following.
Also, there's an awesome chart containing each appearance of the puppets on the movies - Blade is the only one who shows up in all of them. :D

BTW, i've watched Axis of Evil but i haven't found the time to review it, coming soon. Spoiler: it sucks.

Yeah, I actually think Axis of Evil was a good idea, just VERY badly executed.  Has Full Moon done ANYTHING worthwhile since 2005?  Really depresses me, as I used to see the logo on VHS boxes and think it'd probably be at least not boring.

Well, here i am again. This time i'm gonna talk about "Puppet Master: Axis of Evil". Let's start by saying something that i'll probably repeat a couple more times: they really got VERY cheap on this one. I don't understand anything about types of picture quality or recordings, but here it's obvious that they didn't had much money because it looks like a movie from the 80's, and it was shot in 2010 - besides, the not-so-very-special effects are incredibly bad. I mean, come on, even the crapiest movie from ScyFi Channel has at least some special effects, but here they don't even have stopmotion. I wouldn't mind if the plot were any good, but guess what... it isn't.
What doesn't make any sense is that it's made by the same people that created the awesome Puppet Master III: Toulon's Revenge, so i assume they were short on funds and tried to milk this cow a little more to pay the rent or something.
I'm not gonna lie: this movie is so bad that i don't even want to write about it. But i opened this Pandora's Box, so it's my duty to close it for good.

PUPPET MASTER: AXIS OF EVIL
2010, directed by David DeCoteau.

THE CAST

Danny Coogan: the protagonist of this mess. He's supposed to be somehow crippled but we see him MANY times running around as if he were some kind of sportsman or something, doesn't make any sense.
Beth: Danny's love interest. Honestly, she may as well not be here at all and the movie wouldn't change much.
Don: Danny's brother. He plans to wage war against Japan using his sneaking skills. Shot by the Gestapo fellas and then transformed into Ninja, a new puppet.
Ben: a nazi soldier infiltrated in search of the secret of the puppets, he eventually teams up with Ozu to blow up a factory. Gets stabbed by Ninja.
Ozu: evil japanese woman who's infiltrated in the chinese neighborhood, so clever. She manages to escape with some puppets.

THE PLOT

The movie starts with Danny fixing a chair in the basement of an hotel. He's complaining with his uncle Len that he can't go to war because he's a useless crippled or something, and also tells Ben that he met a visitor at the hotel, an old fella called André Toulon that has magical puppets that move without strings. Of course his uncle laughs, but Danny insists in meeting him again.
Meanwhile, Toulon is in his room talking to his puppets. Two guys that eventually are revealed to be from the Gestapo are searching for him and his secret, but André won't give it so easily. Instead, he just blows his f**king head off - a wise decision considering what's coming for the next hour and a half, i actually felt happy for him. By the time Danny finally arrives at the place the nazi are leaving but not before stomping him into the ground, giving him a chance to take a glimpse of one of the bad guys. When he enters the room he finds the dead body of master Toulon, and after a search of ten seconds he discover the chest with the puppets inside. That's right, the nazi totally flipped the room for like half an hour and didn't find anything, but Danny managed to find a hidden pannel in a few seconds.  :twirl:

So we move on to Danny's home, in which he greets his mother and his sneaky brother, a guy who's incredibly happy to go to war. This may sound silly at first, but it gets repeated over and over in the film. In fact, it gets repeated so f**king much that for a moment i thought this was just a bad attempt of recruiting people for the army - to fight the nazi, i guess. I don't know, i'm just trying to understand why they did this movie, it certainly doesn't bring anything new to the saga, as it doesn't even has the original characters and the puppets barely participated in the fun.
We then see a secret meeting between the two german guys and some japanese woman called Ozu. They plan to blow up a plant which would cause a chain reaction and pretty much destroy half the city, slowing down the weapon production of their enemies, but in order to do that they have to infiltrate one of the soldiers, called Max (what, doesn't sound german to you?), so they change his hairstyle. Yeah, i don't know; again, don't ask me, i'm just the messenger.
So Max (now called Ben) gets a job instantly in the plant and now can roam it freely, while at the same time he tries to score with Danny's girl. Our hero gets p**sed off by this, but then his anger turns into fear when he discovers that Ben is the same guy that he saw walking away from Toulon's room, back in the hotel. After this finding he follows the killer to his secret hideout, and with the help of the puppets he manages to steal a piece of their plan. This scene is beyond awful because the effects of the puppets are terribad, pretty much like Retro Puppet Master, in which you don't actually see the puppets moving, but they always have a portion of them hidden which can only means that someone is holding them by that half. It seems that André lied because THEY'RE NOT MOVING WITHOUT DAMN STRINGS. :hatred:

So... where was i? Oh yeah, the Gestapo guys find out who's been spying on them, and pay a visit to his family. They kidnap Beth and shoot both Ms Coogan and Don, who somehow manages to survive for like fifteen minutes with a bullet in his chest so he could say a last line to Danny. He, learning the secret of the puppets with nothing more than his imagination, creates Ninja puppet with the essence of Don, giving his brother a last chance to do something useful. The wooden gang then goes to the teather in which the bad guys are hiding and unleash their fury upon the japanese guards. While these killings are totally ridiculous, they're the only good part of the movie, so i hope you're not asleep / dead /drunk by this point.
The first jap eats a living leech from Leech Woman, which we clearly see getting chewed by him, yet somehow it devours him from the inside, totally destroying his troath. The other guy gets grabbed by Pin Head and taken down to the ground, making possible for Tunneler to make a tunnel in his head - its impossible to explain how bad this scene is, just watch it and you'll understand. At least we have some crappy gore to cut out the monotony...

This is getting ultra boring so i'll finish it quickly: Danny manages to rescue Beth, with his last breath Ninja sticks a katana (like ten times longer than him) in Max's back while he's spewing a long and cliché hatred speech, and Ozu gets away with Toulon's chest containing the rest of puppets, minus Blade and Pin Head. The movie ends right here, so abruptly that it makes you think they just gave up.

I'll give a single slime just because the killings scene. The rest of the film is total garbage, which looks more like political propaganda than a horror / suspense movie, avoid it at all cost.

THINGS I LEARNED FROM THIS MOVIE

* If you get shot in the chest, you can survive for like half an hour.
* War is the most fun activity ever.
* A man capable of planting a bomb in a plant can also be very sentimental.
* Japanese people never take out their headbands. Ever.
* Eating a leech is fatal.

STUFF TO WATCH FOR

41 mins: You both have friggin machine guns and can't use them? They're right there, shoot them!
42 mins: Calling a suicider "coward" while in front of a bunch of japanese people isn't a very smart thing to do, imo.
52 mins: Good luck? Not needed, he can sneak past the enemy forces and assasinate them all.
53 mins: Man, can someone end this disgusting happy family scene? Its making me sick.
54 mins: Thanks!
60 mins: Uhm, guys... he's not pointing you anymore, you can put your hands down, you know.
67 mins: "Give me some RANDOM GRATUITOUS BREAST SHOT! or just shut up, please!".

Nothing more to say that hasn't been said already. Stay away from this awful piece of crap. And i don't even want to know how's the next one... Puppet Master X: Axis Rising. I'll be back very soon...

Considering how awful were the more recent remakes of movies in general (well, to me at least), i'd rather see this NOT happen, but i guess they believe there's still some more milk in that cow.  :bluesad:

I have a fondness for Puppet Master II. I have the whole collection but have yet to make it through all of them.

I do have Puppet Master Vs. Demonic Toys, which I hear is non-cannon, but it's a fun train wreck of a movie...with the Corey Feldman, too!

Kind of strange, as the original franchise doesn't even appear to be dead - Puppet Master X came out in 2012, and Band says Axis of Termination is coming out in 2016 supposedly.  2017 sounds more likely as Band recently said principle photography is about to start.

So, seriously, we're going to have a sequel to the original franchise within a year of the remake probably hitting.  Bizarre.

Axis of Evil seems like they were going for a digital emulation of the original three films looks, but didn't get it quite right.  Looks sort of like a very mediocre TV show from the 80s, with those red and blue highlighted fast stocks.  The original films actually look much better, and so do decent films from the era.  I mean, compare Axis of Evil to like Once Upon a Time in America, Blade Runner, or Ran.

Exactly what i thought, but the strange part is that when i see an oldish movie i expect stopmotion effects - like, it's mandatory to me, yet here they didn't wasted any resources on it. Totally lame.
I've watched Axis Rising yesterday and, while it is a much better movie than Axis of Evil, it's still mediocre compared to the old ones; also, it doesn't have that picture quality, instead it does look like a modern film but with awful acting and special effects. I'll write a review as soon i have the time for it!
