My favroties are kinda simple-
.Horror-of course-I've loved horror films since I saw FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLFMAN back in 1967.
.Sci fi-I read alot of sci fi too-Heinlan,Pohl,Assimov-I love it.
.War-I really love a good war movie-I just saw FURY (2014)-I really liked it.
Actually-I like movies from most genres-except romance stuff-unless its CASABLANCA-no thanks.

Humorously bad movies in any genre. THE ROOM proves that even romantic dramas can be entertaining if done badly enough.

Horror: Gothic, supernatural or psychological. Not into slashers, gore or torture porn.

Hitchcockian thrillers.

Film noir.

Hard science fiction.

1) Sci-Fi (my favourites are the movies of the 50s & 60s but I love a great Sci-Fi story and love many films from all eras - to me, this genre has more underrated films than any other)

2) Horror (my favourites here are the 1930s Universal Monsters, the 1940s Lewton films, Monster Movies of all eras,  1960s psychological thrillers, 1920s German Expressionist films, 1970s/1980s mind power/supernatural horror, 1980s slasher)

3) Film Noir (so many great films of the 1930s through the 1950s fall under this)

4) Mystery films (Sherlock Holmes, Mr. Moto, Charlie Chan, Bulldog Drummond, Philo Vance, Hitchcock thrillers, etc.)

5) 1980s/1990s Action Hero films (Stallone, Ah-nold, Van Damme, Lundgren, etc.)

6) Martial Arts Films (Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Fake Bruces, Tony Jaa, etc.)

7) Blaxploitation (Sweet Sweetback, Blacula, Shaft, Foxy Brown, Coffy, etc.)

8) Superhero movies

9) Weird movies (especially those with mind tripping what is reality scenes?)

10) Animated movies (including anime)

11) Sports movies

12) Fantasy films

Tokusatsu: Shows like Ultraman or Superhuman Barom 1 are fantastic and full of rubber monsters! Tokusatsu is mostly seen in TV shows, but there are movies that are technically of that genre.

Sci-Fi: I'm more of a monster person, and I particularly like the really bad ones from the 50s and earlier.

Horror: Even though horror usually has no effect on me, I still enjoy watching it. Usually paranormal horror is my favorite, as I'm not too big on slashers or movies filled with gore for the sake of gore (like Saw or Deathproof, bleck).

Comedy: I always enjoy a good laugh every once in a while. And sometimes I like to get those laughs from something that isn't... B-Rated. My personal favorites are Blazing Saddles, Zoolander 1 and 2, as well as Princess Bride.

Westerns   as far as I am concerned,a bad western is better that some "good" movies
Science Fiction....sometimes the cheesier the better
Fantasy....although there have been several that are at the top of the wretched list
Film Noir....gritty,dark and often claustrophobic but great entertainment
Horror....older films mostly;these modern ones are too graphic for me
Historical Epics....like Gone With the Wind or Glory or The Ten Commandments

13. Adventure films (Lone Ranger, Swashbuckler, Pirate, Zorro)

14. Documentaries

15. Disaster Films (esp. 1970s, but also 1990s and more modern ones)

16. Comedy (The Three Stooges, Abbott & Costello, Hope & Crosby, Don Knotts, Mel Brooks, Marx Brothers, Carry On, Ma & Pa Kettle, 80s screwball, Monty Python, etc.)

I generally like most B-movies too, cult classics and all that.

Horror - 60's - 80s era being my fave. Good or bad. Good Being: Cronenberg and Argento. GREAT being: Hospital Massacre. Bad being Umberto Lenzi (but in the nicest way).
Suspense - The Little Girl Who Lives Down The Lane type of stuff.
Exploitation - I Spit On Your Grave!!!!! I also consider most 80s knockoff slashers to be exploitation too I guess.
Comedy - This Is Spinal Tap, Clerks
Action - Pretty much any 80s- '90 Arnie stuff, also the Death Wish series
Then there's what I call WTF Movies: Rock 'N Roll Nightmare, Cool As Ice and the like.
The last movie I saw in a theater was A History Of Violence which was ok, and prior to that it was the rerelease of The Exorcist. Needless to say I don't like going out to see new movies.

I think I like classic Horror best; but as stated elsewhere, I don't like Slashers, Torture Porn, or Gore.  A movie can be "gory" but I must then be compelled by quality or a complete lack thereof. 

Agreed AHD, but I really enjoy the more obscure slashers. Don't like torture porn either - HATED stuff like Hostel. Gore means nothing to me either  - a good horror movie can have offscreen violence and can still be kickass. Like the AWESOME Axe (aka Lisa Lisa for instance).

I think the BEST horror films-even in the last 30 years-had NO GORE-!
The TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE had no gore at all-neither did ALICE,SWEET ALICE,the remake of INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS-or-the first HALLOWEEN.Gore is a gimmick-its been around a while-H.G.Lewis used it as a gimmick and-as a whole-his movies sucked. ( I did like 2000 MANIACS-cuz of the banjo music).

drama.. i also like movies based on world war 2.

I like just about anything (except romance), but I tend to watch bad martial arts flicks, film noir and 50's sci-fi the most.

I usually like everything except musicals, some fantasy and most modern comedies.

I love political dramas - "The Parallax View", "All the President's Men", "Frost-Nixon", "Three Days of the Condor", "Nixon" etc.

Then there's comedies, sci-fi, dramas and murder mysteries.

Horror, I can just about put up with, but I don't like slasher-type films where women are by and large the victims.

A lot of us seem to share similar tastes in movie genres, which only makes sense as this isn't the avant garde French New Wave movies forum.  :teddyr:

From looking at my DVD collection percentages, and the regularity with which I watch types of movies, my list is as follows:

- action blockbusters - I watch just about every summer blockbuster movie these days like Battleship, Transformers etc, as well as all the 80's classics like Die Hard, Commando, Rambo, and the like.

- martial arts - these can be divided into a few categories, including American movies (Van Damme, Scott Adkins), Hong Kong movies (Jet Li, 70's and 80's Jackie Chan, Naked Weapon), the 80's ninja movies, and now the more recent Indonesian and Thai martial arts movies with Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais and Jeeja Yanin.

- science fiction - I love science fiction from all time periods, from the wonderful Earth Vs The Flying Saucers (1956) and Forbidden Planet (1956) to Star Wars (1977) and Close Encounters (1977) all the way to crossover scifi like Source Code (2011), Inception (2010), Upstream Color (2013), etc.

- superhero movies - I've been reading comics since I was a wee lad, and to be able to see the Marvel universe truly come to life in a series of excellent movies is pants-wettingly good.  Big fan of the MCU, and also a huge fan of Christopher Nolan's Batman movies.  Big fan of Nolan's work in general.

- animated childrens movies - the old Disney classics like Alice in Wonderland are some of my favourites, and I'll happily watch Despicable Me, The Incredibles, or anything else out of Pixar or Dreamworks these days.

- classic cinema - movies with Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Fred Astaire and similar from that time period are super.  I'll watch those movies in the cinema when they screen.  I've seen Gone With The Wind, Funny Face, North By Northwest, and others in the cinema.

- comedy - I don't watch a lot of comedy, but I prefer British comedy like The Life of Brian and Hot Fuzz.

- horror - I don't watch a lot of horror either, but I've got a few DVD's which are usually crossovers from science fiction or action, like Event Horizon.  I quite enjoyed The Midnight Meat Train (2008) as it's a Clive Barker adaptation.  I particularly liked No One Lives (2012) because it's a fun action horror film.

- documentaries - docos I've watched in the last few years include Searching For Sugarman, Finding Vivian Maier, Dior and I, and Iris.  All of them took different approaches to their presentation and style, with Sugarman being the most technically proficient, Vivian Maier being a more 'this is me and this is what I did' approach, and Iris was a very old school direct cinema type of production.

- certain European films like The Venus Trap (1988), Manon of the Spring (1989), Three Colours Red, Double Life of Veronique and the like.

What I don't watch at all: romantic comedies, drama, historical drama, romantic drama, torture/gore, giallo, war.  No, I take that back.  I'll suffer through the occasional romantic comedy for the sake of appeasing a girlfriend if it makes sexytime more likely.  If I have to pick a film in that context, I'll try to find some obscure French or Italian romantic comedy as I prefer them to American ones.

All The President's Men and Three Days of The Condor ran into trouble with the apartheid censors.  :buggedout:

But then again I left SA in 2004 at the ripe old age of 11 (with my parents in tow of course), so am not fully versed on what the film censors back home are up to these days. I have heard of the odd bit of heavy handed censorship that may reflect badly on the tyrannical beast in a shirt and tie - President Jacob "I've done nothing wrong" Zuma (whom is currently clinging to power by the thinnest of thin skin of his fingernails)

From the latest news I am hearing that skin is getting thinner all the time.

If I was in his position at his age I think it's the option I would go for at this point, but some people just can't give up the power. I do have to say though I have no idea how he is as a president, although the impression I get from the news certainly involves a lot of corruption. While I used to keep a close eye on news around the world, since I got married I've focused my attentions more domestically.

In literature/fiction you have what're called non-genre stories. Can you think, though, of non-genre movies? I'm not sure I can, right off.

That is an interesting question, and I can't think of any right off neither. A film might belong to more than one genera. For example, the upcoming Solo : a Star Wars story is not only a science fiction film, but also--apparently--a western + a heist film, and who knows what else. But, as far as I know, all films belong to some genera, even if more than one.

I like just about every genre. I have everything from musicals to westerns to sci-fi to cult films in my collection. But the genres at the top of my list are probably:

* Police/crime movies (especially from the 1970s): THE FRENCH CONNECTION, SERPICO, MEAN STREETS, DOG DAY AFTERNOON, THE TAKING OF PELHAM 1 2 3 . . .

* Blaxploitation (some of which also fall under the 1970s police/crime category): SHAFT, BLACULA, BLACKENSTEIN, SUPER FLY . . .

I love blaxploitation movies! My favorites- The MACK, COFFY, BLACULA, FOXY BROWN-heck-anything with Pam Grier!
