Title: GAME OF THRONES, Season 6
Post by: indianasmith on June 27, 2016, 12:27:38 AM
What a great season it has been!  From the Resurrection of Jon Snow to the Battle of the Bastards, the return of Danyreis Stormborn, the odyssey of Arya, and Cersei Lannister's bloody revenge on the High Sparrow and his acolytes tonight, the body count has been high, the boob count lower, and the overall drama fascinating and fun to watch!

This is the first season in which I have had no idea what to expect, since HBO's series has gone beyond George R.R. Martin's last book, and even before then, the plot had diverged in huge ways from the written story.  Now I have to languish till next spring and await the final season.

So . . . has anybody else been following the story this year?

Can't believe there aren't any other answers yet... maybe it's because some fans of the show seem to think this season has been to kind to the main characters. We'll see, winter is coming. I thought it was a short but very sweet season, and I only regret Tyrion hadn't much to do in it. I mean, his best scene was a drinking game with some supporting players.

But on the other hand there's the end of Ramsay Bolton's arch and a damn good episode battle. So far the show had gotten away with hiding most of the battling off screen -budget constraints, I can understand- but this was just glorious and packed with great moments.

That was a MOST impressive battle scene all right!

I'll try to remember to respond once I finish seeing the season.  I know what mostly happened because some people spoiled it on another site and I only saw the last half of the finale, but I want to see it all before commenting.

I will say this;  They've said next sesaon is the last.  So, my predictions are

A.  The white walkers threat is going to be a bit of a disappointment.  Mainly because since they've been building them up since the start of the series, if their threat doesn't take an entire season to properly deal with or is over in only an episode or two will be a massive let down.

B.  The series will not have a happy ending.   A bitter sweat one is the best we can hope for.

I'm afraid I haven't seen it, so I can't comment on its impressiveness, but . . .?! I can say that impressive battle scenes are more suited for the big screen than the TV screen by a factor of o'er 8 to 1. Frankly, the only impressive battle scenes I have seen on TV, when I still had a TV, was . . .

Battle of Culloden (1964)
Red Badge of Courage (1974) with Richard Thomas as the titular hero.
World War III (1982)
and an episode of "Wagon Train." The one guest starring Ronald Reagan.

As for writers of impressive battle scenes, then go with the military guys. Though, of course, there are exceptions such as Terry Brooks and Robert E. Howard, etc.,  who have written impressive battle scenes for being civilians, but . . . I have found the most impressive battle scenes, maybe because they lived it, are those written by ex-military men, which would exclude George R. R. Martin. Men like . . .

Len Deighton -- Cy Endfield -- Jack Higgins (pseudonym) -- Dennis McKiernan -- Douglas Niles (who I presume was in the military, as his granddaughter is a military man/woman) -- Alistair Maclean -- Owen Parry (another pseudonym) -- Barry Sadler -- and the grandmaster of them all J. R. R. Tolkien.

Well given the size of my tv at home I have to say it was pretty damn impressive. I'd disagree generally: Obviously certain epic scenes would be best suited on the big screen rather than on tv, especially if there are ads. Got to say though there are some great battle scenes I've seen recently on TV shows and Game Of Thrones not only did it really well but it leveraged something that films just cannot replicate: It had a good reliance on character, especially one you've followed through six seasons. Not to spoil the main battle scene in this but it really plays on the emotional investment you have with this character.

On a side note just watched the latest episode of Preacher and the opening scene for the Sundowner episode is a great example of a fight scene that works really well, somehow even better because its not on a big screen.

There will be a season 7, but . . .?! unlike the previous seasons, which featured 10 episodes, season 7 will have only 7 episodes. And season 7 will not kick off till the summer of 2017, or, so I have heard.
