Title: Space is big... Post by: AoTFan on July 16, 2016, 11:45:47 PM So, yeah, sometimes I think about space and it just kind of blows my mind. I mean, to quote Douglas Adams, "Space is big. Really big."
I mean, before I talk about that, let me go into a quick side step.... let's talk about light. Some people think light is just "there" but no, waves of light travel through space just like everything else. It's not instantaneous, but it IS pretty damn fast. Light travels at 186,000 miles a second. (Or, for those of you reading in the rest of the world, 299,792,458 meters a second.) A SECOND. Say, "One thousand one." That's a second. In an hour, light travels 671 million miles! Now, what's this have to do with space? Well, space is so damn big they had to come up with a new unit to measure distance in it. The light year. Yes, the distance light travels in one year. So, multiply 671 million by 24 by 365.5 and that's about 6 trillion miles (9 trillion kilometres). And even THAT is a small distance when it comes to measuring space. For instance, earth to the other side of the Milky Way galaxy is 52,000 light years.
