Title: Girl hitchhiking movie from the 70's?
Post by: Archivist on October 11, 2016, 10:08:54 PM
You fine people deliver more often than not, so here is another long shot which has been on my mind for some years.

Seen on Australian television in the late 80's or early 90's.  Looked like it was made, or set, in the 60's or 70's.  Probably an American movie.

All I remember is that it ends with the main character, a young woman, thumbing down rides.  She may have been wearing jeans or fitted pants, may have had a headscarf in that cool 60's and 70's way.  It was like she was rebelling or getting out of town.

It had a bit of a 'Valley of the Dolls' feel, also a bit of a counterculture feel.  I also seem to remember a woman vacuuming the floor in a scene around the same time as the ending.

This isn't a vital one, but it's been in my mind for ages, and I'd like to close that loop if I can.

Edit: It's not Chastity (1969) with Cher.  It had a somewhat happier feel, more rebellious than sad.  Chastity ends with Cher sobbing on a road as a truck drives by, the movie I saw had a determined young woman thumbing rides from old cars and station wagons.

Pretty sure it's not Even Cowgirls Get The Blues (1993), as I think it was from an earlier time.

And Soon The Darkness?

Thanks, Spiff, but it's not And Soon The Darkness.  But thanks for drawing my attention to that movie, I didn't know that the recent movie with Amber Heard and Karl Urban was a remake.

Is it possibly Take an Easy Ride?  It's a British short (about 45 minutes or less) that begins and ends with girls thumbing rides. The middle portion is pretty much a low-rent version of Last House on the Left and very-softcore sexploitation mixed together.

Thank you, java.  Heck, I didn't know that one existed at all!  Yet another to add to the list of things to track down.  But it's not the one, I think.

When I see something on TV that I like these days, I flick to the channel guide and take a picture of the title so that I can recall what I'm watching.  Or I look up the film, screenshot the wiki entry and paste it into Evernote.  The pre-computer version would have been to make a brief note in a pocket diary, and I did that for a number of movies.  But not this one.  Darn it all.
