Title: Escape from LA ripoff
Post by: Couchtr26 on October 11, 2016, 10:35:52 PM
Friend looking for an Escape from LA ripoff.  Suggested 2019, After the Fall of New York, Bronx Warriors Trilogy, A Man Called Rage but not any of those; he seems to remember it being better quality than those.  Any suggestions?

I'm a little confused here.  Escape from L.A. (1996) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116225) came out well after all of those movies you listed; how could any of them be ripoffs of it?

Is he perhaps looking for an Escape from New York (1981) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082340) ripoff?  If so, he may even be thinking of Escape from L.A.! :buggedout:

One place to look would be IMDb's list of Most Popular "Post Apocalypse" Titles (http://www.imdb.com/search/keyword?keywords=post-apocalypse).  There are 929 titles listed, but you can easily refine the list using other relevant keywords.

(For reference, the above suggested movies are:  2019: After the Fall of New York (1983) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085125), "Bronx Warriors Trilogy" 1990: The Bronx Warriors (1982) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085124), Escape from the Bronx (1983) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089104), Endgame - Bronx lotta finale (1983) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089091), and A Man Called Rage (1984) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087303).)

His words not mine on that, however my concern is a) Escape from New York is what he is thinking or b) I'm having a bias and not seeing or thinking of the answer.  Higher production values would suggest later but my familiarity with 90's B especially post apocalyptic is lacking to say the least.  The only other thing is he is adamant about is the hero being poisoned.  Also, not the President rather relative (I'm thinking this is confusion with Snake and the person being sought is important for another reason religious or corporation issue.)  I was thinking The Bronx Warriors was the answer based on that but no.  I may be stuck in Italy but need to look elsewhere.

@ Couchtr26, I do agree with the confusing but those 'b-movies' do seem like a rip-off compared to mainstreamed Hollywood movies even though they were made decades before. I think it has to do with the DVD packaging.

Movies that come to my mind.

The Ultimate Warrior (1975)

Def-Con 4 (1985)

A Boy and His Dog (1975)

Dead Man Walking (1988)

[It's so damn difficult to find a trailer on this movie because the 1995 Susan Sarandon movie seemed to fart all over it]

Tank Girl (1995)

It's possible he could be thinking of The Postman (1997)  since it came out after Escape from LA.

Been away a couple of days.  I'll give those suggestions a try and thanks for the help everyone.

My mind went straight to Lockout (2012) which is a pretty blatant ripoff of Escape From LA. John Carpenter even recently won a ruling in court for plagiarism.

Here is the trailer.
