Title: What I Learned From 100 Days of Rejection
Post by: AoTFan on December 16, 2016, 11:44:38 PM
So, I found this REALLY neat video online from a fellow who, trying to desensitize himself from rejection, deliberately tried to get himself rejected for 100 days (and filmed it for his blog.)  The things he learned from it were pretty interesting.

One thing I have learned as a writer is that you had BETTER get used to rejection.
Dozens of publishing houses and agents before I found a publisher for THE TESTIMONIUM; and when I do a book signing I'll get a dozen "no's" or more for every single sale I make.
Fortunately being married to my wife prepared me for that sort of thing very well . . .  :bouncegiggle:

One of the most interesting things that really stuck with me was when he asked a random guy if he could plant a flower in his backyard.  The guy said no, but when Jiang asked him why, the guy said that he had a dog that would dig up anything planted in the backyard but THEN the guy recommended a lady who lived next door who loved planting things.  So, Jiang went over to her house, knocked on her door, and they ended up having a nice conversation together.  It struck me as really interesting how that "rejection" turned into something positive and the guy who rejected his proposal (no matter how silly or trivial it might seem) actually had a legitimate reason to.

I once had a psychologist tell me rejection is the most difficult thing to face in life, but I think betrayal and loss both outrank it. Humiliation too. And bad hair days.
