A disclaimer.

While I have had the good or bad fortune never to see it in its entirety. I have seen parts of it, and my only comment is "What the hell were they thinking?"

I've told this story before.

I saw the original Star Wars in the cinema as a very young kid, and was completely blown away.  It was all I could talk about for days and days, repeatedly getting up in Show and Tell at school to talk about the movie until the teacher told me to sit.  Anything related to Star Wars on TV was a must-see, including the original 1977 Making Of documentary which some blessed soul uploaded to YouTube a year ago:

! No longer available (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSuDjjlIPak#)

So, you can imagine my delight when another Star Wars special came on TV.  It was... not what I was expecting.  But as a kid obsessed with Star Wars, anything is acceptable.  The bit with the Stormtroopers ripping up the Wookie kid's toys was a bit rough.

Enter my Grandma.

My Great-Gran and I were watching this quite happily.  Great-Gran had her usual cup of tea and a few biscuits beside her armchair, and I was on the couch (not too close or you'll damage your eyes).  Then Grandma walked in, saw the Wookies on TV, and was immediately perturbed.

"Why are you watching this?" she asked.

"I saw the movie, it was great!" I replied.

"Really??  Did they... have such long hair in the movie?" asked Grandma.

"Uhhh yeah?  They are Wookies, they are supposed to look like that, Grandma."

Before I knew it, Grandma and Great-Gran were having a brief but intense discussion, and I was sent to bed.  Again.  For doing nothing but watching a TV special with characters I had already seen in vast, cinematic glory.

It was not until many, many years later that I was able to watch it properly (thanks to this forum) but also learn that it was one of the most ridiculed and reviled parts of the Star Wars universe.

We tried our best to put ourselves in the position of a kid watching it for the first time in 1978 but came to the conclusion that a kid would find it boring. The sketches just aren't funny. They have nothing to do with Star Wars other than some sets/names. The only charm we found was in the commercials which some saint kept in the recording we found. I genuinely wish I could look back on this thing with warm, nostalgic feelings like you do. It would make this such an easier pill to swallow.
