Title: I'm going back to school
Post by: bob on January 20, 2017, 09:00:41 AM
In a little under 2 weeks I'm officially going back to the university where I graduated from in May of 2008. This was my plan after I quit my horrible job last month. It is my intention to get certified to teach elementary education. This isn't all about money, although that is a part of it. This is about the persuit of happiness. I'm excited and can't help but feel a little old while doing this.

Tution skyrocketed since I was there last.  :bluesad:

I'm gonna see if I can get some grants since I know I'm far from the traditional student. My GPA from my younger days rules out any chance of a scholarship.

The university requires a minor to go along with the elementary education major for some reason, thus I'm taking Shakespeare Tuesday and Thursday mornings 8-9:30.

After that I'll complete the English minor since one of my majors from back then was a different English degree.

I'm taking an entry level teacher education course that meets once a week 3:30-4:30  on Thursday afternoons. That will require 20 off campus hours to complete.

Congrats!

I'm back in school now myself, I'm in my second semester of law school.

I finally met with the only advisor for the teacher education department yesterday after we didn't connect because she needed hand surgery and I never got an email she sent setting up a  meeting weeks ago for some reason.

I learned that I can't get any scholarships or grants because I graduated already. There are no more spots open in the teacher education class I was looking at. After I explained to her that I'm not taking out any loans she strongly encouraged me to enroll in a community college to get an associates degree in instructional assistant.

For now I'm planning on still taking Shakespeare, assuming I can register for it (she didn't lift my flag for that yet) and got the massive book for the class, it couldn't because hurt my chances of finding a job with that on my resume and I'm not sure what to do now. It's too late to enroll in the community college.

I'm not sure what my plan is now. I know I need to find a job.   :bluesad:

A lot has gone on with this in the few days the site has been down. Even if I wanted to take Shakespeare I can't because the adviser I met with never lifted my flag.   I'm in the process of officially being accepted into the community college. Even though the end game of getting the associates degree and the career paths it will open up for me isn't exactly what I want I feel it's my only choice because I'd end up being super deep in debt again and have to take out student loans again able forced to take horrible jobs to pay it back. It's ludicrous that I would have to get super into to debt to do ideally what I want to make a better life for myself.

I'm planning on taking two classes in the summer but I'm going to have to wait and see if what my advisor thinks and hope he/she isn't a giant douche like my old one.

I switched over to become a high school teacher, just recently graduated. Currently looking for work but the term has only just started here so will relief teach in the meantime. Not sure what age ranges elementary school is (not American) but its a crazy profession from my experience so far (which I enjoy). Good luck!

So I'm in!

Transfer credits wiped out a lot of what I would've had to take.

I'm starting with 2 classes in the summer with two classes that should be easy as I ease back into school.

In the fall I'm planning on taking four classes, one of which is evil -- I'm looking at you College Math. The other three shouldn't be too difficult.

That sounds like what my teachers had to say about [trying] to teach me.

I just noticed that the college I'm going to start in the summer finally got the last of the transfer credits in and I'm pretty sure the 2 classes I'm taking in the summer I don't need, had to print things off to double check.

It woul'dve been nice if they got that s**t done before I had a meeting with an advisor last month.

I need to head tot he college for other things ...gonna see if I can a quick appt, I gotta get this s**t done...and if there's nothing available in the summer I need -- she's gonna need to guide me through how to drop them and get out of paying for em.

And now I'm all p**sed off.

Title: Re: I'm going back to school
Post by: bob on April 13, 2017, 02:18:33 PM
so I'm not taking any summer classes --- turns out my transfer credits eliminated the need to take the two I was looking at

I'm not sure how or why but some of what I took years ago erased the two psychology classes I had to take

I also don't need to take any electives -- so basically I just need to take what's in the program, which is nice

I'm a little unsure about having to take online classes, but most of what I'm eyeing for September is only offered that way

the kicker is addition being online, literally all of them have TBD as when they will be taking place during the week which is a little strange

I have an advising appointment next week to register for the fall and hope she has information about the times for the classes

I bought books for 3 of my 4 classes, so this is becoming a little more real to me. I'm a little concerned that the book for the other class isn't available for purchase yet considering it starts at the beginning of next month.

I'm also a little skeptical of the online classes but I guess I'll see how it goes. There's no real good place where I live to have my laptop with a reliable internet connection, a notebook (will I never need one  ) and a school text book near by.

I checked my school email for the first time in a week or 2. My tuition went up just a little because "state mandated fee charges" even though my payment plan was set in stone months ago. This is bulls**t.

Why do I get the feeling that there would be a fee for having a fee?

My gut feeling that this is an effect of a state budget not being set in stone on time. It's still being debated now, was due to be in place a while ago.

I picked up my math book earlier, just leaves one book left to pick up --- might help if the teacher picked the text for the class so I could buy it

I literally need the book in 3 weeks and if it's back ordered I might not get it in time

I learned yesterday that I won't be able to get any sort of assistance from anyone on how to navigate the online site, which I have never used before, from any college staff which in my book is kind of bulls**t.

I start next week and I'm kind of sort of lost on the stupid website.

Still no update on the book I need either, which I was told might be somewhere on the online only classes website which I have yet to see anything for any of my classes for, save the math class.

I'm kind of thinking I might have made big mistake.

2 days in and so far I learned that my plan to just stare at my computer for hours on end for the classes isn't the best idea. I did that yesterday and got a massive headache.

Today I learned that I need to be using Chrome when using the school website because my popup blocker on what I use for surfing the web for leisure purposes didn't allow a popup even after I told it to. Much cursing happened.

joy.....

next week my math text will cover 5 sections

all my others classes are going well, but they too are starting to eat into my time a little more

I think something might have happened to one of my teachers though, earlier in the semester she said texting her was the quickest way to get in touch with her if there was a question --- and  did just that and got a reply quickly, over a week ago I sent her 2 texts about different things but never got a response

so....for a while now I've been slowly working on a math project --- I need to do well on this to offset my 2 bad test scores

never ever had a math project before

I also got started on another project for a different class, but it's a final project --- the equivalent of a final, it's not that tough but it will eat my time

for 1 class I think all I have left to do for it is make a message board post tomorrow and take a test -- due by the time classes end -- mid December- and I'm done with it -- which is nice, the class is easy but it's one less thing to worry about and to take up my time

completely finished with 1 class, I think I did well on  my math project --- much needed --- because the teacher said it could replace my lowest test score....which is pretty low....I'm also working on a take home test for math since the teacher announced it would be taking place only 1 day before it occurred --- I should do very well for obvious reasons, massive my massive project for another class is just a time eater abut not too hard ----- everything else down the stretch doesn't look that hard

I'm waiting for one more book to show up then I'll have all my printed case books for semester four.  I got a notice yesterday that the last one was being shipped.

Otherwise one class is using an online textbook service, and in another class the professor said he was just going to send us the material he wants us to read electronically - mainly PDFs and the like.  I like that because it cuts down on the weight and I can read materials at the gym on my iPad.

I'm still waiting for my grades to be posted.  I guess they have until a week from Saturday to post them but I hope they'll get posted sooner.

I took the plunge and signed up to 3 PDQ courses (Personal development qualification - They're basically an entry level qualification that just shows employers that you understand the basics of a field and are willing to learn) this year...I just got fed up of looking for Jobs and constantly being declined because I was missing one skill or another so I took the plunge on a level 1 management course (Just to help strenghthen my current management position as when I joined I had no experience and nothings been offered :teddyr:), A teacher training course (Because my dream job is a film lecturer at my local university and while this qualification almost certainly WONT get me that right off the bat it'll at least open the door to opportunities that are currently unobtainable) and an IT course...because even though I've been heavily using computers since I was about 7 years old (Im the head of department at a post production house) I actually have no direct accreditations in IT which has always been a great source of pain to me...that last ones a little bit different because while it is classed as a PDQ I can pay extra to have it turn into a level 3 full blown qualification (Basically the equivelent of a UK A-level)

At the minute im trying to catch up with the post-christmas mountain of work and catch ups that always inevitable accumulate over the season but im hoping to kick in with these starting next month  :teddyr:

The grades have started to come back in from last semester and so far they've been higher than I was expecting.

I seriously thought of ordering this shirt...

I am being driven up a wall one class. The issue isn't with the material, it's with the teacher. All of my classes are online. With this in mind the bulk of the links leading to things I needed to read or use as a reference for an assignment weren't working. I emailed the teacher telling her about this 5 days ago. I never heard back from her, but she found the time to go online to grade things.

I ended up spending one day tracking down similar things on my own.

I'm now very behind in my other classes, which are significantly easier.

This class is now borderline impossible. The same 2 websites with links leading to this or that that were direct links no longer work and there's used in literally every lesson plan for the rest of the semester. I'm thinking of trying to find a way to file a compliant against the teacher if this doesn't get fixed soon or dropping the class.

This is impossible pretty much at this point to keep up with what I'm supposed to be reading, the bulk of which is links to this or that. I've spent the last 4 days nothing but trying to do what I can for this class

It's not just me, others in the class have had the same problems with the links.

I was also invited to join an Honor Society. There's some dues involved in joining. I'm not sure if I should join. I'm thinking of emailing my advisor and a teacher to see what they say.

First of all, congrats! Education is rewarding all on its own (but new/more job prospects definitely help).

Never think you are too old; I dropped out as an undergrad and returned a few years later and finished my BA (and I was a little bit older than my classmates). When I worked at the university library, I'd see many older folks (even ones in their 70s) who continuously kept pursuing more education. It's never too late. I can't wait to retire so I can go back to college just for the sake of it.

Secondly, to the previous poster: that's an awesome Aphex Twin logo/avatar.

So this is what I’ve been up to since mid- February:

My math and English classes left me in various states of confusion, especially the math class. My final projects for my both classes took up the bulk of my time the last week and a half of the semester.

I’m all registered for next semester. While meeting with my advisor for classes I learned how to file an official complaint against my math teacher. However, the school is changing servers or something involving where all the online classes are. That is where most of the evidence of against the teacher is, but if somehow everything from my classes last semester is erased by the time I can log into it I guess I won’t file the complaint because it seems stupid to me do make accusations of what happened without any proof if it. Either way, I’m hoping things will be much better next semester as I have this teacher for 2 classes.

I start up again on September 4.

I have 2 classes with that awful teacher I had last semester and decided that if she screws up horribly again I will file a complaint against her - she literally had all summer to double check links to things to make sure they work.

One unexpected benefit of joining the honor society is that I will be changing auto insurance companies due to a discount. If I keep my current level of coverage my bill will literally be cut in half. If I add a lot more coverage I will save $2 over the same time frame.

I'm going into the field for one of my classes. This should be interesting. I'm a little anxious about this. No where on the school website does it indicate if I have to set up somethings for myself or if the school is for me. Either way, I'm reviewing my books from last semester as a refresher - I figured I couldn't hurt.

First day of the new semester was today. Not a good one for me. I kept a textbook from last semester because a teacher said I'd need it for a class I'm currently enrolled in. That is not the case and I bought a book I needed for a class earlier today, hoping I don't need it for something before it arrives. Additionally, the teacher who kept screwing up links last semester did that in both classes I have with her. I've decided I'm already going to file an official complaint at the end of the semester. I really hope I don't have her next semester.

This past week sucked. I literally spent 5 days working on an assignment where I had to find information about/read 14 books. My plan was to catch up on the rest of my stuff yesterday but the online server for the school went down. As a result I literally cannot see what assignments I have to do, I literally cannot submit any finished work or work on anything until it's back up. It's still down. All I could do was pick up 2 books from the library I needed for an assignment, but I can't completely remember what I'm supposed to do with the information I read about from them. I'm f**ked. I'm hoping the teachers will understand if I need extension for things that were due last night through the middle of next week.

Today I submitted an application for an academic scholarship. Even if I do not get one, knowing that I finally have a realistic chance to get one and finally filled out one is a major accomplishment for me. In high school my grades were never the best. At Parkside my grades were touch and go for the most part, but I did make the Dean's List my final semester there. Since enrolling at Gateway I've made the Dean's List every semester, including a perfect 4.0 last semester, and joined the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. I'm older, wiser and finally learned how to buckle down. Here's to hoping.

My internship starts tomorrow and my sleep schedule will be altered. I'm not a morning person, but because it took the college about a month to find a school for me and the schools background check took about a week for them to complete I'm kind of stuck with the hours because I need to get 72 before the semester ends. I'll be a zombie for a bit until my body gets used to it.

Title: Re: I'm going back to school

I've been really busy since the internship started. The teacher who is my supervisor is great. There is a lot of Star Wars stuff in her room along with a literal "Rock Wall" pictured below.

My body has adjusted to being much more active earlier in the day then it was before the internship stared and my sleep schedule has been altered. The big draw back besides needing all the hours in a short period time, as I mentioned above, is that the hours I'm doing the internship were what I had set aside for my school stuff, and this case my other classes. It's been tricky getting the timing correct. The last two weeks I had a big thing due each week that I turned in literally hours before they were due as a result of the time crunch.

I've been ok at managing it so far, but now is the mid point in the semester -  every semester after the midpoint I get a lot more things that need to be done for all my classes.

I also have a big project which involves be getting involved in a community activity where I don't get paid for my services that I haven't started yet. It only requires two hours of my time but it's been pretty difficult to find something that would qualify for this per the criteria. I'll figure it out.

today was pretty awesome - I finally got to do something besides just sit, observe and take notes

I got the worst behaved kid in the class to focus on what he was reading, not be distracted by other students behavior, got him to sound out words he was having trouble with and had him explain what we were reading (I was reading along with him)

extra bonus points because we were reading a Star Wars book

I've been really tired the last 2 weeks because of the hours I need for the internship combined with the college taking much longer then I would've liked to find a school for me. I think I'll make the 72 hours. But, I'm still struggling with the time management for my other classes as this internship has ate pretty much all the time I used for school stuff the past year. I just didn't have time to finish things until a few hours before they were due and I hate that.

I found something for my community project which I need to contact the person in charge it.

I'm also almost done with my 40 book project which has been a real time eater, but an enjoyable one for the most part.

Today I got the entire class to be in awe and shocked at me. Usually I  keep my voice at a quiet level, taking a lot of notes and helping the students with whatever - usually reading and math.

Today I saw the worst behaved student in the class was not keeping his hands to himself and was punching another student or play fighting, I couldn't tell. As this as going on the entire class was very loud and my supervising teacher was organizing something at her desk and couldn't see what was going on because of where she was sitting. I raised my voice, so it was above that of the class and said keep your hands to yourself. He stopped and my supervising teacher was impressed at my actions.

I've been done with completely done my classes for a few days now.

I'm a little upset that the one big thing that really concerned me for a class that was time consuming a section of a portfolio I needed to have done by the end of next semester, the reason that I choose to leave my internship when I did well after I met the hours I needed for it and got my evaluation from my supervising teacher, the teacher decided that it didn't need to be done.

So in theory essentially I left my internship for nothing, but I really needed the extra free time for other things for classes so it kind of worked out.

I'm still a little confused about what needs to go into the portfolio, but I think I figured out what needs to be in it. I'm going to be working on this during my break. I said think because even after I emailed the teacher asking for clarification she said that what I have in there for now is ok and that I need to finish it before the end of next semester - which I think is a cop out.

I also learned this morning that I got a scholarship for next semester.  :teddyr:

It won't cover my entire tuition, but it will cover the entire cost of 1 of my classes and a little bit more. I also don't need to buy any books for any classes next semester, which is a small victory.

I'm still waiting for 1 unofficial grade for a class to be posted, but so far so good, with 1 official one being posted already.

I'm incredibly confused by the portfolio --- it reads like double talk at parts

It says need to get 2 artifacts for X number of things and meet 10 requirements --- which would mean I need to find 20 artifacts

but, in the reading rubric for it says I need to meet 40+ requirements wit 2 requirements for it

I've been working on this thing for hours since I got done with the semester and if the professor bothered to answer about my questions I would feel much more at ease with this thing

I hate it

I scored a major victory today - not getting raked over coals for the cost of two 3 ring binders. I paid under $5 for the total cost of them. Each previous semester I had to pay anywhere from $3 to $5 per binder.

I'm thankful you thought of me, but I don't need any books this upcoming semester

if I saw this ad when I first went back to school....I would've saved myself a lot of money

I'm inching closer to the finish line: I just applied for graduation at the end of the upcoming semester.

Classes started up again today. Like clockwork there were a few emails in my college email account from other college asking me to join them. I'm still incredibly stressed/hating that portfolio I need to have done by the end of this semester having hit a wall with as far as I can get on my own without any guidance from a professor. I made great strides on during it during my break but I'm stuck, or I did a lot more work for it then I needed to - depending on how much I need to do. I'm still not pleased the professor I had last semester basically punted my questions I had about it last semester. I'm going to email my professor I have for the class that I need to have it done for tomorrow.

Here's my early take on my classes so far:

My science class isn't as tricky as I expected.

I can tell already that my Technology and Resource class will be a pain in the butt.

So far, pretty much nothing has been going on my internship class. I've had to fill out a few things and submit them to my professor which she will then use to find a teacher that will let me student teach under his/her supervision. The schedule of assignments she has for the entire class I think is a little ambitious. She has everything set on the assumption she can find a teacher willing to let the entire class working under the supervision of someone by January 21. This was about the same timeline that my internship was supposed so start last semester, about 3 weeks into the semester, and it took well beyond that for my professor to find a teacher that was willing to let me student teach under her supervision.

Update:

I'm pretty bored because I'm a week or 2 ahead in my 2 classes unrelated to my internship.

At the same time my internship still hasn't started because the professor, even though it literally said in the syllabus that she would set it up for me, hasn't.  She also decided that even though part of the schedule is to contact her by  a certain date to let her know I'm having issues and she'd get the ball in motion was optional. She told me it's on me on feed back from an assignment week or so ago.

As a result I've been sending out "please let me internship here" emails. I'm filing a complaint against her. This is dumb and I'm p**sed off. I'm also pretty sure I'll be scrambling all semester with my non internship classes cuz of the time commitment I need to meet,  just like last semester. f**king dumb.

If you told me when I was in high school just scraping by with mainly C's that I'd be getting scholarship down the road I would've said you're nuts.

This happened yesterday at a ceremony.

I'm still very much ahead in 2 classes, but in a state of constant confusion in my Technology and Media Resources course.

I'm getting the ball rolling on finally starting my internship. The polar vortex has made it impossible for individuals to access their school district email at home, so the email exchange I have been doing with a principal has been at a stand still.

Tomorrow I will be interviewed by the principal of the school I'm hoping to finally start my internship at. I think this is kind of weird because I was just let in last semester after that school found a teacher willing to let me work with her. Whatever.

My internship finally starts tomorrow. This is way different then last semester as I will be rotating between 3 classrooms under the supervision of 4 different teachers. Additionally, I will be helping to  supervising recess --- something I did maybe 10 total times last semester.

Naturally I have a lot of things related to the internship class, which I literally cannot start until the internship began, due Monday night because my professor who was supposed to set this up for me a while ago didn't. Essentially, I will be spending a chunk of tomorrow just doing things related to this class.

I've been at the internship for 8 days now and it's been interesting.

I've definitely gained more patience, something I've sorely lacked.

It's kind of weird rotating between three classrooms.

I've also noticed that the special education students I've been working with are more affectionate then the group of third graders I worked with last semester.

Also, on my first day I saw a fight on the playground --- which was most unexpected.

I'm very much ahead in my other 2 classes.

I've been incredibly busy with my classes.

My professor for my internship class is still useless. A huge chunk of my grade my internship class is based on her supervising me in one of the three classrooms I'm rotating between. I emailed her 3 weeks ago to set a date and time and didn't receive a replay. I emailed her again last week and have not received a reply.

I am to mail her the hours I've been at the school last month. I had all my cooperating teachers sign the form with the hours filled in for each day I was there. No where has the teacher provided the specific labeling I am to use for mailing address for the college where her office is.

Today I got a certificate in the mail saying that I graduated my program last December. I'm not sure what to do with it. I'm learning towards emailing my advisor because I'm pretty sure this was a mistake.

I once had a student fall asleep on me in class - I lecture about 3 times a year - but I never have had any f bombs dropped on me.

I've been incredibly busy since I last updated this

one of my teachers decided to move the due dates for a few time consuming things up by a week or so 2 weeks back, because reasons

a few weeks ago I caught a cold from student, I've got all sorts of crud in my windpipe

yesterday was my last day at the internship

I also finished the last of my assignments yesterday

now while I wait for my final grades to be posted I hope to recover from this cold

afterwards I will email the principal where my internship was to thank him for the chance to be there and ask about a job because I could tell I was definately needed there

all classes done - check, all tuition payments made - check, pay a graduation processing fee because I had the audacity to want to get credit for prior learning - check , and now because I seem to have misplaced my cap and gown from my college graduation over a decade ago I need to buy another one

some aspects of college are bulls**t-  having to pay a fee because of my transfer credits is dumb

I found out via letter in the mail yesterday that I am to receive a 2018-19 Scholastic Award a few hours before the graduation ceremony

I was identified as being the student with the highest scholastic achievement in my program by the Executive Vice President/Provost on my college

Today in the mail I got a letter requesting my presence after the graduation ceremony at “the President’s Reception”

My colleges Board of Trustees, President and faculty will be there

Suffice to say this alters my post ceremony plans

When I gruadted from kolligde  (sorry) in 1994, Dad grabbed the cap and gown, put them on and told me to take a picture.
