Title: 100 STOP MOTION FILMS
Post by: RCMerchant on January 21, 2017, 04:36:25 AM
We had the animated thread, and it was stated we could post stop motion animation films, yet only MAD MONSTER PARTY (1967) was listed! Methinks, perhaps,it was overlooked-certainly by myself.
Ok-so can we list 100 stop motion films? Are there 100?

Here's an oldie-by the Father of Kong himself,Willis O'Brien. Obie was hired by none other than Thomas Edison to make this for his Edison Company.

Ok RC, good topic BTW.

2. Jason and the Argonauts. Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sg1v5HkpdEA (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sg1v5HkpdEA)

Harryhausen's 1st film to receive top billing.  Epic in scope, but lacks a real ending. The skeleton-fight scene is considered a landmark moment in FX.

14. Q:THE WINGED SERPENT  (1982)has an all star-B movie cast, including Richard Roundtree,Micheal Moriarty,Candy Clark, and the always great David Carradine. The final battle with Q dive bombing the the Chyrsler Building, while being machine gunned by folks therin is kind of a Kong reversal. Great movie!

the F/X were done by Dave Allen, who, among other things, worked on Gumby and Davy and Goliath shorts!

It also has tons of action and fantastic animation by Doug Beswick, who worked on,among others,FLESH GORDON,the EMPIRE STRIKES BACK,ALIENS,TERMINATOR,EVIL DEAD II,and BEETLEJUICE!

It was listed on the first page. It's #16!
I agree about NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS-so it's #34!
I dunno if this is gonna make 100. Ah well-gotta try

#35. JOURNEY TO THE BEGINNING OF TIME (1955)-a charming little fantasy film...where all the dinosaurs aren't rampaging monsters. But it would be kinda neat to see this Bronto snatch up one of these youngsters like the one in
KING KONG and and chew him into gristle! But that's just me-hehehe! :twirl:

How much stop motion does a film need to be considered a stop motion film?  It was a pretty common FX technique til CG overran everything.  Even It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad, World had a short stop motion segment, to show a fire engine ladder go crazy, I believe.

I'm not counting It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad, World yet, but I will count:

Can we add the Christmas Holiday Rankin Bass stuff because there's a few of those worth mentioning (think Rudolph was already added)? Actually if you research stop-motion in films, I think a 100 is possible (I mean there's stop motion in some films some don't realize like Robocop films and Ghostbusters, etc. and there's quite a few full stop-motion animated too).

In the meantime:

Black Scorpion's listed, so...

53) The Beast of Hollow Mountain

54) The Time Machine

55) Gumby: The Movie

56) The Animal World (Has a segment of stop-mo dinosaurs animated by Willis O'brian and Ray Harryhausen. For some reason whenever Irwin Allen needed cheap dinosaur footage he'd always take the monitor lizard/alligator battle from The Lost World. Why he didn't re-use this is anyone's guess.)

57. Kubo ( visually amazing!)
58. The golden child ( the dancing soda can)

62) Robot Wars - Not the cool British show where real people build real robots which really fight each other, the lame mid-90's Charles Band DTV feature.  Cool Stop-mo robots, including a giant scorpion and a humanoid, but a plot that about as well thought out as Michael Bay's Transformers. Luckily it's a short feature, and I just bought it for the FX anyway.

Cool Stop Motion Robots.

63) Dragonslayer - How could we forget Phil Tippet's contribution to the world of cinematic dragons? Perhaps the best evil movie dragon till The Hobbit movies came out.

64) Krull - I normally don't think of this as a stop motion film, but the Widow of the Web is a beautiful sequence, even with some repeat footage.

Have we listed I Go Pogo yet? How about Return to Oz? Or The Adventures of Mark Twain?

Finally got a chance to check. None of these were on the list so we're now on #68. Who has 68?

68) The Box Trolls
69) Coraline

How can we have Kubo and not have these?

How can we forget this? It's reviewed on this very site!

75) Caveman
I believe the dinosaur(s) in this film were brought to life via stop mo. http://www.nytimes.com/movie/review?res=9907EFD61138F934A25757C0A967948260 (http://www.nytimes.com/movie/review?res=9907EFD61138F934A25757C0A967948260)

80) Gumby
81) Davey and Goliath

RC already listed a TV show, Land of the Lost, so we might as well list these old Art Clokey shows.

82) It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad, World

I mentioned this earlier, but didn't list it because the stop-mo segment was only a short part of the film's run time. We've now listed other films with only one or two stop mo scenes, so I'll list this now.

Come on, fewer than 20 now...

If I understand what I read correctly, most of the FX were done w/ stop-mo. There was some CG too.

Do we have The Crater Lake Monster yet? Seems like an obvious addition...

87) We don't have it yet, so 87's The Crater Lake Monster

Tho I think the numbering's a bit off; we may have fewer than 87. :(

Never completed, but deserves some credit: Ray Harryhausen's Evolution.

Before working on monster and adventure films, Harryhausen made a series of animated Fairy Tales. Here's one: Little Red Riding Hood.

Going through http://stopmotionworks.com/video1.htm (http://stopmotionworks.com/video1.htm) I found some more I don't think we have:

89) 7 Faces of Dr. Lao - A George Pal feature with stop mo by Jim Danforth
90) Honey I shrunk the Kids - Been thinking of this one for awhile; Ant/Scorpion battle
91) The Fabulous World of Jules Verne
92) Tom Thumb - More George Pal
93) Dragonworld - Wasn't this one of Charles Band's DTV kid flicks?
94) Jesus the Miracle Maker
95) Howard the Duck

And one more, from their news feed:

96) VIVA The 'NAM - Feature made with animated action figures http://www.stopmotionworks.com/news/index.php/698/viva-the-nam-2010 (http://www.stopmotionworks.com/news/index.php/698/viva-the-nam-2010)

And if we're including flicks with only a few moments of Stop Mo-

97) Star Wars
98) The Force Awakens

In both movies the holographic chess game was realized via stop-mo.

Anyone else know of two more stop-mo films?

99) The Bear (1988) - Uses Stop Mo to create several surreal dreams, tho I can't find a clip.  :bluesad:

100) The Wizard of Speed and Time - Again, how did we miss this?

Well, it looks like this is finished. I'll should probably go through here to check to make sure the count is right and check for repeats. There are also a few others I'd like to add, tho not right now. I wonder if we can list 150...  :buggedout:
