Title: Any big PC gamers here?
Post by: AoTFan on March 01, 2017, 07:20:57 PM
So... I went by a local consignment store and they have a bunch of PC games for sale.  Now, me with a (relatively) brand new PC I'm thinking of buying a couple of them, esp since they're only $8 a piece.  I'm curious though if there's anyone here who's played any of them and can give me a) a review and, b) probably more important, tell me if any of them have pesky DRM (digital rights management) bulls**t that I gotta worry about.  What's that you ask?  Well, lots of games nowadays come with this thing where you have to enter a purchase code that's printed on the CD.  Hey, fine and dandy!  I don't care for pirating either, buuut, problem is, a lot of them "lock" the code onto certain accounts with Steam or some other online service and then you can NOT use them if you say, oh, I don't know, buy the game used.  Which basically means you've just wasted your money.

I've been burned TWICE on this with the games Skyrim and Left 4 Dead.  (Luckily I didn't pay too much for either of them, so there's that at least.)

The games I'm looking at are:

Crysis 2
Darkvoid
Darksiders
Divinity II
Trine
Last Remnant
Sins of a Solar Empire
South Park: Stick of Truth

If anyone's curious, I'm a big RPG and turn based games guy.  Spent hours playing Elder Scrolls Oblivion (which is why not being able to play Skyrim kinda ticked me off) and spent as much time playing Heroes of Might and Magic III.

Course, I suppose the other worry I have is that I'm running on Windows 10 and some older games tend to get crazy on that system.  (Course, most of the new games have patches for them.)

So, any thoughts would be appreciated!

I've been playing Overwatch, but not much else.

Played Sins of a Solar Empire a few years back. Sci fi version of Civilization. I liked it well enough, although since their were only 3 playable races I did find it a bit limited. I'd say it was worth $8.

Speaking strictly of the games themselves, not the platform...

Darksiders is surprisingly difficult, but it's also original (at least I thought so) in its post-apocalypse setting, wherein zoos and street and parking garages have becomes entirely new locations infested with infernal beings. A fun game if you like challenges. It is somehow similar to Dante's Inferno or God of War, if you know those.

South Park: The Stick of Truth is a fun, light RPG (and it is an RPG, you level up, pick a character class, fight, go on quests, etc.) that also serves as a sort of stomp down memory lane to South Park fans, since it references many, many places, events, people from the series. If you play, choose Jew as your starting class, lol. The game does get a little repetitive after a while but the quality level of the design is decent.

The other titles you listed I don't know, except if I read right and you weren't able to play Skyrim, you really should sometime. Skyrim is probably on everyone's top twenty of all time list. (Though IMHO Oblivion was better.)

Have fun!
