Title: Star Wars : What Might Have Been
Post by: BoyScoutKevin on March 07, 2017, 04:34:13 PM
The script that became 1977's Star Wars was not the 1st script written for the film. There was a prior script, written some 3 years prior, or in 1974. This is some of the differences between that script and the 1977 script.

01. The Jedi here are known as the Jedi Bendu.

02. Their opponents are the Sith or the Knights of Sith.

03. Except there seems to be more than 2 of them.

04. The hero here is called Annikin Starkiller.

05. Hereafter named "Luke" to prevent any confusion.

06. "Luke" has an younger brother named Deak.

07. Who is killed by the Sith.

08. Here the Jedi cremate their dead.

09. "Luke's" father is not a Sith.

10. But, he is mostly a mechanical being.

11.The capital planet of the Empire is not Coruscant.

12. Here it is Alderaan.

13. Which looks a little like Bespin, the Cloud City.

14. And it is not destroyed by the Death Star.

15. Which here is called the Space Fortress.

16. But, hereafter, will be called the "Death Star" to prevent confusion.

17. Here Alderaan of the film is called Aquilae.

18. And here Aquilae is a desert planet like Tatooine.

19. There is a Princess Leia.

20. But there father is not Darth Vader.

21. Her father is King Kayos.

22. Her mother is not Queen Amidala.

23. Her father is Queen Breha.

24. "Luke" is not her brother.

25. But he does fall in love with her.

26. She does have 2 younger brothers.

27. Twins.

28. Their names are Little Biggs and Windy.

29. There is a Darth Vader character.

30. But, he is not "Luke's" father.

31. Nor is he Leia's father.

32. Nor is he a Sith.

33. There is a Luke Skywalker character.

34. But he is older than the "Luke" in the film.

35. He is a military general in the Resistance.

36. And he is a Jedi.

37. "Luke's" father here is Kane Star killer.

38. Who does die in the film.

39. But not in the 3rd film in the series.

40. But in the 1st film in the series.

Little Biggs and Windy??  My brow would have been so furrowed you could grow corn in it.

41. There are robots named R2D2 and C3PO.

42. But they belong not to Leia,

43. But to the Empire.

44. And R2D2 talks in recognizable human speech.

45. Storm troopers here are known as Shock Troopers.

46. And they are armed with lazer sabers.

47. There is a Han Solo character.

48. But, he is not a human.

49. He is a lizard-looking creature called an Urellian.

50. "Luke" and Leia escape the "Death Star" by diving down a garbage chute.

51. But, not with Han

52. But, with Prince Valorum

53. Who is a Sith.

54. In escaping the "Death Star," they land on the Wookie planet.

55. Where they meet Chewie.

56. Who is a prince among his people.

57. And who they save from slavers.

58. They also meet Owen Lars.

59. Who is apparently not related to anyone else in the story.

60. But, whose wife is named Beru.

61. Chewie becomes a pilot

62. And leads the attack on the "Death Star."

63. When the "Death Star" is destroyed in the attack not only is the Imperial Governor,

64. here called Hoedaa, killed,

65. but so is Darth Vader.

66. Unlike in the film, here Chewie does get his medal.

67. There would be a crawl across the screen,

68. but it'd come not at the beginning of the film,

69. but at the end of the film.

70. This was suppose to be not the only film in the series,

71. but instead of calling the 2nd film The Empire Strikes Back,

72. it was called Saga of the Ophuchi.

I wonder if the suppose 2nd film got any further than the title. Still, except for Chewie not getting his medal and the missing boys, I can't think of a change from this to the script used in the film, that wasn't a change for the better.

Pretty interesting.  Can you do a follow up with The Empire Strikes Back?

Maybe. While I know of no alternate script for The Empire Strikes Back, someone wrote an alternate version to the film, that does contain some differences from the script used for the film. Let me see if I can find the alternate version, and then I'll see if it'll be possible to do a follow up, and I am glad you enjoyed what I previously posted. What might have been.

As previously stated, this is not an unused 1st script, but it is an alternate version of The Empire Strikes Back. A "What If" published in 4 parts between July, 2002, and October, 2002.

What if Luke died on Hoth?

Luke dies.

Han therefore goes to Dagobah to train as a Jedi with Yoda.

Bringing not only R2D2 with him, but also Leia, C3PO, and Chewie.

But it is Leia who winds up training with Yoda as a Jedi on Dagobah.

Where she learns from Yoda that she is a Skywalker and that her father is Darth Vader.

Solo, R2D2, Chewbacca, and C3PO then leave for Cloud City.

Where they are captured by Boba Fett.

But, then are rescued by Lando.

And it is Fett, not Solo, who is encased in carbonite.

Darth Vader arrives.

Cloud City is destroyed.

Everyone then flees. Solo, R2D2, Chewbacca and C3PO fleeing to Tatooine.

Where Solo, R2D2, Chewbacca, and C3P0 are captured by Jabba the Hutt.

Han and Chewbacca are then rescued from Jabba the Hutt by R2D2.

The 3 of them then leave for Dagobah.

Darth Vader arrives on Tatooine.
(Notice the pattern.)

Darth seizes C3PO from Jabba.

C3PO dies, but not before he tells Darth there is a Skywalker on Dagobah.

Darth then leaves for Dagobah.

When Vader gets to Dagobah, he and Yoda fight.

Yoda is killed by Vader.

Leia and Vader then fight.

But, ere Vader kills Leia, he is killed by Han and Chewbacca, who have arrived in the nick of time.

He dies, but not  before he learns that Leia is his daughter.

With both Luke and Yoda now dead, Leia heads off with Han, Chewbacca, and R2D2 to save the galaxy.

This was my take on it, and it probably did not do it justice, but if one wants to see it in its original, then look for the comic book collection Infinities, which also includes alternate versions of Episode IV : a New Hope and Episode VI : Return of the Jedi.
