Title: GET OUT (2017)
Post by: Rev. Powell on March 08, 2017, 10:06:31 AM
A nervous Chris goes to meet his white girlfriend's wealthy family for the first time, but finds everyone at their country home acts strange---especially the unusually docile and reserved black servants. Works brilliantly as a straightforward horror movie and also as an allegory of black paranoia about white society and the fear of cultural assimilation. The horror structure keeps it from being preachy while simultaneously conveying Chris' feeling of discomfort at being surrounded entirely by white people better than a realistic treatment ever could. Lil Rel Howery, as Chris' suspicious TSA agent friend, adds some of the best comic relief I've ever seen in a horror film---laugh out loud tension breakers. Works on multiple levels and is highly recommended. 5/5.

Some people think that the trailer below gives away too much, so beware.

I was just watching the trailer for this today!  It looks like a really good and somewhat disturbing movie.

When I saw the topic title a few days ago, I thought it was a command to leave this site immediately

I saw it the other night in a pretty crowded theater. I really enjoyed it. The pacing is fantastic, as the film goes from slightly awry to bats**t crazy in a slow, measured fashion.

I think the movie did capture, especially in the early scenes, the minor racism (good-intentioned or not) that people have to deal with on a daily basis. Then, of course, things aren't what they seem.

I will say that my theater erupted into spontaneous applause during the movie, which rarely happens.

I'm keen on seeing what Jordan Peele does in the future.

Sorry I'm late to the party but yeah "Get Out" was really good.

I actually felt tense and nervous during the entire thing.
I wanted to see the hero make it out alive.
The main character's life was at stake. At no point did I think "He's the hero, they won't kill him."

SPOILERS
-----------------------

The ending was REALLY satisfying! I was actually cheering as Chris systematically
slaughtered every one of those sick f**ks. My favorite part was him goring the Dad
with the Deer he hit at the beginning of the movie (That they made into a trophy for some reason).
I love when in a horror film the hunter becomes the hunted and the hero is the one that kills the killer.

I also liked that there was never an answer as to why they were targeting black people. The movie keeps that
a total mystery. The artist guy said race had nothing to do with it but can that really be true? Is it really just
a coincidence that every body they stole belonged to a black person?

Thankfully the film didn't have any race baiting in it either. I was a little worried there was going to be some sort
of far-left BLM type message about how evil white people are but thankfully that was never the case. Obviously there
was some symbolism referencing the days of slavery but when you think about it even when black people were slaves
they weren't selected for their race. They were sold to white people by OTHER black people. At no point did it feel like they
were beating me over the head with some ham-fisted moral about race.

Regardless the movie was very, very good and I give it 8/10.

...Also f**k Armond White. He's not a critic, he's a troll that likes to be contrarian and his reviews are nonsense.
He robbed this film of 100% on RT because he wants to look like some sort of genius. But I think I'll rant about him later.

I caught this the other day, and I enjoyed it a lot. The progression in atmosphere from a little uneasy to creepy to completely crazy is done very well. And as has been said before, the main character's life is really at stake. You never have the impression of 'that's Will Smith, of course he's going to make it'. Instead I kept thinking 'will they go for a dark ending? No, they surely won't! Good God yes, they are going to!" It is really tense.

A bit spoilery

As to why they are targeting black people, I assumed that it was the trope of the jaded and old whites feeding of  the supposedly greater vitality of the blacks, or that that was the way white characters in the movie saw it anyway.

I just saw it! Its worth watching. I had some twists that i never could have guessed. I thought i had it figured out at first. The horror element to it was a pleasant surprise for me. I cant talk about without spoiling it, all i can say is: teacups and brains.

Good film. Had some legit jump scares when I first saw it. They experimented with some different things on the subject matter.

Sidebar: to me, Rose wasn't really that hot at all. Hell, I would've rather been with her mama. Aside from messing with my head and screwing me up mentally, I'd have preferred her over her younger supposedly sexy daughter.
