Title: SPLIT (2016)
Post by: indianasmith on May 25, 2017, 04:01:41 PM
When I saw THE VISIT, I commented that M. Night Shamalayan, after a series of cinematic abortions, seemed to be getting his mojo back.  That movie wasn't great or anything, but it was WAY better than his previous three.  So this week, after hearing my students talk about how good SPLIT was, I decided to watch it myself.
HOLY.  COW.   :buggedout:

This is far and away the best film that Shamalayan has ever made.  Intense, brilliantly acted, and beautifully shot, it features a very tight plot and three remarkably well-drawn characters: Kevin/Danny/Patricia, a psychiatric patient with 23 distinct personalities, played with incredible skill by James MaCovy, Casey, one of three girls he kidnaps, played by the lovely Anya Taylor-Joy (from THE WITCH and MORGAN), whose eyes can convey more emotion than anyone's I think I have ever seen, and Dr. Karen Fletcher, played by Betty Buckley, who is treating Kevin and all of his alters - and suspects that something horrible is transpiring, then tries to intervene with tragic results.

Without giving away too much of the plot - three girls are kidnapped by a schizophrenic madman, whose various personalities warn them that yet another identity is emerging, "The Beast," who will be "coming for them" soon.  As they try to plan a way to escape, their captor's various personas attempt to comfort, intimidate, or befriend them one by one.

I was VERY impressed with this film.  5/5 and congrats to M. Night for getting his mojo all the way back!

Agreed! This is a movie woth watching, its one of the best movies ive scene in a while! James plays his role to the hilt. My favorite personality was the "child". His dance scene was hillarious and awkward at the same time. Also, i like how this movie connects to unbreakable. I havent quite forgiven shamalama yet, but if he keeps this momentum up, hell be considered a great film maker again. Im tempted to watch the visit.

I wouldn't call it his best but it was an enjoyable romp. McEvoy kills it in this role. I wouldn't say its a super brilliant movie or anything, there's still plenty of silly here but it was fun and simple enough to not be overly complicated. The doctor was pretty great too, though she does some silly things at times her ability to understand these personalities was pretty well played out.

SPOILERS:

Towards the end when the Unbreakable music cue starts to build gave me a big smile because I love that movie. Bruce Willis was a nice addition too, until he started to act. The slight smirk and terrible delivery of his line was just so bad... Interesting to see a hint of a sequel, I'd be up for it.
