Napoleon Dynamite

The Jerk

I did not find either one funny; they were just boring.

I don't hate THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION but I'm like "so what?" I do know a couple of people with similar opinions.

FORREST GUMP was mainly annoying. I always forget that people like it a lot because it seems like such an unlikely thing for humans to enjoy.

I kind of hate GOOD WILL HUNTING.

I'm with Indy on the ROCKY series. The first one was overrated and the sequels were bad, except for introducing us to that classic 80s icon Mr. T!

I've never been able to sit through IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE.

A SEPARATION won an Academy Award. I watched it and have no idea what the plot was. Totally forgettable.

Definitely E.T.

I can't stand Wizard of Oz, mostly because it brings back bad memories of my being cast as the Cowardly Lion in our fifth grade stage production of it. To this day, if I hear "Over The Rainbow" I cringe like I've been shot.

I have never understood why the Sleepaway Camp series gets so much love from horror film fans. They're not even "entertaining" kind of bad, they're just bad.

I don't get the whoop-dee-doo over the Lord Of The Rings saga. I watched the first film, thought it was impressive enough on a technical level but otherwise was like "(shrugs) Whatever."

I have to agree on E.T.

I sat there watching it in the theater. Parents and kids everywhere.

E.T. is dying. Yeah, spoilers for a movie older and more referenced than The Bible. Anyway. E.T. is dying. Him and the kid have their meaningful moment, and, in the greatest Disney-like tradition, the alien Shar-Pei stops glowing, dead.

Well, the adults were all bawling their eyes out. I'm looking at these easily manipulated people in shock.

Then, a couple of rows in front of me, a kid, whose mom was practically wailing in grief, pokes her and, in a rather loud voice, says, "He's dead. Can we go home now?"

That sums up my feelings about E.T.

John Wick - a generic hollywood shoot 'em up. no story, no substance, no acting. its just a glock commercial and head shots, lots of head shots.

The fast and the furious - only profanity would express my hate for this film and its sequels.

The Marine - horrible and stoopid.

Happy feet - ARRRRRGHHH!!!!

I absolutely loved the first GODFATHER but I thought the second was underwhelming. Actually, I wasn't crazy about GOODFELLAS either, outside of Pesci's classic scene.

maybe I should watch them again. I dont think my taste in movies (or basically anything) has changed that much since then though tbh.

for what its worth I was very underwhelmed by Shawshank as well!

Just looking at the top 250 IMDB-List I just realized another one...Spirited Away.
Not that I'm not fond of Anime in General...I actually really like it.
And it's not a hate of Ghibli Studios either...love some of their movies.
It's kinda hard to describe, but it is just too much for me.
I love the animation style of the 80s/early 90s...a little bit "cheap", a little bit gritty or dirty even.
Spirited Away is just too polished for me.

all 3 Lord of the Rings

I have tried time after time to finish them but they're just so boring and nothing happens

here's the perfect summary of them

I think Im starting to not like lord of the rings. maybe because theyre so frickin long, and boring. I went to see the first one in the theatre and it was so painful. I remember waiting and waiting for something to happen. I got up to walk out on this movie when; " oh, look, goblins and a giant troll. hmm, that looks cool". so,  I sat down and finished the rest of the movie.

To be fair, ive heard that they are very close to the source material and I appreciate the technicallity and the epic scope of them and all but after veiwing 2 of them recently I have realized that they are boring and waste a lot of time. Ive heard that there are 5 hour versions of each film, uggggh.

...and the Hobbit movies! they suck! they seem like unused test footage from thr LOTR. Running from orcs, and more running from orcs. except the dragon, smaug I think. That dragon was awesome! maybe the best dragon on film? It almost made up for the rest of the crap.

The Matrix films. There can be no better example of image over substance. Low brain activity in both the creation and enthusiastic reception of this blight on modern culture.

"It has deeper meaning." Really? The film's "meaning" is pretty much summed up by the fact that the characters are aware of the fact that "reality" is anything but that, and the best they can do is a bunch of slow-mo, CGI, John Woo-type violence and "create" millions of weapons because...I dunno. Whole thing makes little sense.

Plus, you add in the ending from ALTERED STATES (which was also stupid in both the film AND the novel) and you have completed the brain-dead connection.

I think that the more a person holds the Matrix films in high regard, the greater the need to prevent that person from breeding. EVER!

About the only thing that could have made these films any worse would be if Zach Snyder directed them.

Oh, and JURASSIC PARK. Nice innovation in the realm of CGI, but the offensively and aggressively STUPID "twist" that saves the heroes made me so angry that I remember cussing and b***hing about the movie as we were herded out of the theater. I think I'd rather watch THE HAPPENING than sit all the way through JP again.

They are abominations because of the changes that Peter Jackson made to the story.

I see I'm not the only person who didn't like ET: this is IMO the most blasphemous film ever made.

1. ET comes to Earth from the heavens.
2. When he gets here, no-one recognizes him for who he truly is.
3. His earth mother's name is Mary.
4. He has one true disciple - Elliot.
5. He performs miracles of a kind.
6. He is persecuted, dies and is resurrected.
7. Then he vanishes again.

Who is that?

If you believe his bulls**t, it sounds almost like Kanye West.   :bouncegiggle: :bouncegiggle: :bouncegiggle: :bouncegiggle:

The Christ parallel in E.T. is a bit overdone, but it pales compared to the other problems of the movie.

One of my biggest complaints is that, at the time of release, s**tsberg swore it was not anti-government. Really? A whole nightmarish sequence of the government forces marching down the suburban street at sunset, invading and taking control of a civilian home, casting all the government agents in shadow or wearing dehumanizing space suits and Haz-Mat outfits, and most of them carrying automatic weapons.

Oh, but, umm, that never happened, right, s**tsberg? That's why they went back, using CGI, and removed the guns, making the government kinder and gentler. Just stupid nonsense.

To be honest, if Christ HAD looked like E.T., I don't think we'd see the Christian faith as widespread as it is today.

Title: Re: movies everyone likes but you
Post by: clockworkcanary on July 10, 2017, 10:49:43 AM
I have no comment on ET's Christ parallels, but as far as the government agents looking all menacing, one school of thought I heard that I found interesting is that the story is from the kid's point of view and that's why the scientists came off as they did.  I'm not sure how I feel about it as I would have to rewatch it after many years, and I just don't think I want to lol.

To me, ET is about a sugar-rushed latch key kid who harbors a biological weapon in his closet, heh.

2001: A Space Odyssey

Sure the FX were great, but they were so impractical no one was able to use the same methods. Moving 30' space ships around a studio and doing  most of the matte work by hand is commendable, but expensive. The film didn't really advance the art of special FX the way King Kong, Star Wars, or Jurassic Park did. Don't really like the story either; it seems like the writer and director were trying to be bizarre/unclear to keep people wondering what it was about/talking about it.

Dark City - this was Eberts number one movie of the year one year. I thought the goth look was hokey, the leads were all miscast and the story was an uninteresting retread of a really good 80s era twilight zone episode.

pretty much anything from Japan - never understood the fascination with this stuff. just slow, boring and hate the whole vibe of how I'm automatically supposed to like something because its from there. I do like Godzilla and some of the over the top Vampire girl vs whatever things

As a major Kubrick fan...I'm going to have to totally agree with you on this one. It's boring. It's an awesome spectacle with some interesting conflicts (and I like the four act organization), but yes, it's sooo boring. I often put it on when I have insomnia to help me sleep (it's either that or Roman Reigns matches).

And you are correct: the writer and director collaborated to make this film like an abstract painting. I appreciate it for what it is, but it is probably my least (or second to least) favorite Kubrick film.

The Sound of Music. I admit it is a well-done movie, but when it comes on, I want to claw my way through a wall to escape.

The Terminator movies. The effects are great, but the movies break their own rules.

While I know I'm not alone on this board, I'll include Titanic. I watched it once years ago. It p**sed me off then, and it still does.

I'll agree with the assessments of Donnie Darko. It just doesn't work for me.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show. It's awful, and not in an entertaining way. I don't drink, so it's impossible for me to get drunk enough to enjoy such crap.

And while I didn't hate it, Star Wars: Rogue One was meh.

And last, I thought Mad Max: Thunder Road was the worst of the Mad Max films. Tom Hardy was beyond bland. Mel Gibson may be an awful human being, but he brought warmth and depth to Max's character. Hardy's Max could have been done just as well by a G. I. Joe doll.

I think DONNIE DARKO is a great movie for teenagers. It will only work if you put yourself in the mindset of a teenager. If you try to approach it as an adult, it falls apart.

I dug the original because it was actually trying to do something different than your average teen angst movie. I think it did a great job with its mix of music, editing, and moody camera work.

On the other hand, the sequel was bad. They missed a great chance to do something cool with what they set up, and the whole thing just didn't work. Not that a lot of people like the sequel.

I`m really hate Star Wars

Title: Re: movies everyone likes but you

I`m really hate Star Wars

So do I. No, but . . .

Star Wars : Episode IV - A New Hope (1977)
I did not enjoy it, when I saw in theaters, and I don't really know why, as it had many of the same things that I like in other films, which I liked better, but . . . it was only a marginal dislike, so . . .

Star Wars : Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
I know there are a lot of people who like it, and some who hold this is still the best film in the series, but . . . I really hated this one. The only redeeming feature for me in it was Billy Dee Williams. I hated it so much, and again I don't know why, that, except for a couple of movies made for TV, it put me off of seeing any more Star Wars films for 35 years.

And he's off on a tangent.

While it may have put me off of seeing any more films, it did not put me off, sometime later, of reading the comic books based on the film characters.  For example in one of the latest comic books, Yoda lands on a planet that seems to be a combination of Lord of the Flies + Mad Max Beyond Thunder dome. And while I cannot disagree with people who dislike it, I found it interesting. Interesting characters. Interesting concept. Interesting costumes. Interesting make-up.

Of course, then there are the comic books featuring such characters, as Poe, Obi-Wan and Anakin, Luke, Leia, Lando, Kanan, Han, Chewbacca, and the yet to read Darth Maul. And I believe we are in the near future getting comic books based on Thrawn, Phasma, and Mace. Except for those for Darth Vader and Dr. Aphra, which I find unreadable, I quite enjoy reading all of them.

And we will see what we will see.

Don't worry...it is incredibly boring. Probably the most boring film not directed by Terrence Malick.
Oh yeah...Terrence Malick probably fits the topic. Many people like his films, but I can't stand them...well maybe I like Thin Red Line a little bit.

Good Will Hunting

Brazil (I don't hate it, per se, but I wasn't nearly as impressed with it as I thought I'd be)

Winter's Bone

I'll add Max Payne to the list.  I know it has a lot of detractors, but almost everyone I talked to personally loved it.  As a fan of the original games, I hated every minute of this movie.  Its style only kinda matched the game's vibe, and it just wasn't John Woo enough to qualify as a heartfelt Max Payne film.

I think anyone with a brain goes through a phase of hating THE WIZARD OF OZ.  I did.  Then, you realize how good it is for completely different reasons from enjoying it as a child.  THE WIZARD OF OZ is about as good as Hollywood got.

...
FORREST GUMP was mainly annoying. I always forget that people like it a lot because it seems like such an unlikely thing for humans to enjoy.
I kind of hate GOOD WILL HUNTING.

I hate FORREST GUMP.  And GOOD WILL HUNTING is manipulative horse hockey; hate it and make fun of it often.

That's too bad, it's quite good.
I don't hate Night of the Hunter.......I just found it incredibly boring and predictable...
You don't know sh!t from shineola...
all 3 Lord of the Rings
I loved the first one, was perplexed by the second, and overwhelmingly BORED by the third.
IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE.    Words fail me.
You fail.  Sorry, Newt, but we'd agree about some people being LONG WINDED no doubt (though not in this thread).
2001: A Space Odyssey

Maybe I spoke too quickly about wind...  HOWEVER, I can totally see where anyone would NOT LIKE THIS FILM.  I was BORED the first time I saw it, and probably the second, and the third... but, I kept coming back.  I loved the soundtrack long before the film.  Now, it is one of my favorites.  I have come to LOVE what I call "motionless" movies.  BARRY LYNDON is also like that.
Everything Woody Allen directed
As stated above.
The Sound of Music. I admit it is a well-done movie, but when it comes on, I want to claw my way through a wall to escape.
...
While I know I'm not alone on this board, I'll include Titanic. I watched it once years ago. It p**sed me off then, and it still does.
I truly loathe THE SOUND OF MUSIC.  TITANIC is a film I enjoy hating.
I was tremendously disappointed by THE ENGLISH PATIENT. Maybe I need to watch it again. But the first time I saw it, I kept thinking: "This is really boring. And that make-up isn't fooling me at all."

3 is good because its cheesy as heck, has a crappy biker gang that look camper than camp crystal itself, and has ultra corny 3D fx, and a funky disco theme.

I also love part 8, dunno why but I find it way more fun than the others.

NEAR DARK (1987)

This.

And every Elvis Presley movie ever made.

I'm with you on Near Dark.  I picked it up because I heard it was a classic, bust feels kinda .. there.

As for Rocky Horror Picture Show, I love it as a movie, I cannot STAND it as an "experience".

yeah seen this a few times and cant really make my mind up. there's a lot to appreciate from a directing and atmospheric point of view, but not a lot to actually enjoy. I find it just too bleak and dry a viewing experience overall - but maybe thats the point?

I hated Pulp Fiction. I went to see it with a bunch of friends who were absolutely LOVIN' it, and I sat there waiting for it to end.
I've had similar reactions to several of Quentin's other films, I just don't "get" what everybody thinks is so special about his stuff. The only one that I found somewhat tolerable was Inglourious Basterds, which had a great opening and a great ending but a whole lotta nothin' in the middle.

Indiana hones and the temple of doom. God that movie was really offensive to women. The portrayal of women was so ghawdawful I'm surprised actresses worked with Spielberg after it.

. MARY SHELLY'S FRANKENSTEIN (1994). DeNiro looks just like the Monster in FRANKENSTEIN '80 (1973)! (I liked that movie!)
.INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE (1994).-Ugh.
.any of the RAMBO movies...or the ROCKY movies, for that matter. Stallone's  best movie was DEATH RACE 2000 (1975).
.LAND OF THE DEAD (2005). Sorry George. Romero hasn't made a good film since DAY OF THE DEAD (1985).
.any of the Indiana Jones movies.
.AVATAR (2009) what an over-rated boated piece of s**t!

it's the only QT film I actually was blown away by on first viewing. I've only seen it once or twice since then. not much replay value somehow

I believe it's actually an unpopular opinion when you claim to have enjoyed Avatar  :buggedout:

Unbreakable (2000) - never appealed to me.
The Fountain (2006) - watched it a few times, still think it's bad.
The Butterfly Effect (2004) - this only works for me on a so-bad-so-good level. I'm stunned about all the praise it gets.

haha. to be fair I have only seen it on the small screen in 2D. - but if a film needs to be seen in 3D and on a massive screen to 'work' then I'll stick my neck out and say it's probably a bad movie.

.LAND OF THE DEAD (2005). Sorry George. Romero hasn't made a good film since DAY OF THE DEAD (1985).

Not everyone likes Land of the Dead, far from it.  Expecting greatness like the original three dead movies, it was a major let down the first time I saw it.  I don't hate it, but I don't think it's especially good either.  Diary and especially Survival were pretty horrible, though.  I do agree that they are all garbage compared to George's original three.

I've caught pieces of it over the years, but never watched it all the way through because of how dumb it seemed to me.  I did pick it up on VHS recently, so I may try to suffer through it.

Another movie that I thought was a giant piece of crap and was shocked to see that it had a decent number of fans was Eraserhead.  I made it a little over 1/2 of the way through it before I couldn't stand anymore and shut it off.

It's OK, but I've never been a huge fan of the Exorcist either.

I too thought Inside Out was unfunny. And rather depressing.

I'm a rather nostalgic person, and it almost seemed to be an anti-nostalgia film. I'm not quite sure how the film's universe was supposed to work either. What separates a memory, an imaginary character, and a member of the brain's workforce?

.SUSPIRIA (1977) -I like most of Argento's work-but this one left me cold and confused.

.Any of the Batman movies-except the 1966 one.

.NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS, EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, BEETLEJUICE, or any PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN movie.

.the SAW or HOSTEL movies. Oddly enuff, I like the CUBE movies. Go figure.

But I love anything with Capt. America and the Avengers. I liked Dr. Strange . I just wish they would incorporate the Fantastic Four, the Silver Surfer and Sub Mariner into the Marvel films. Would like to see Black Bolt and the Inhumans too.
I mean-damn-It's not a Marvel Universe without the Four. A new Man-Thing would be nice.

I think that the movie rights for Fantastic Four (and Silver Surfer and possibly Sub-Mariner) are out of Disney/Marvel's control, so that explains the lack of good adaptations there.

They attempted an Inhumans launch as a TV movie, but it flopped hard. Worst Marvel/Disney launch ever.

Disney/Marvel at least seem to (usually) make better use of the characters than anyone else does.

Fox had the Fantastic Four rights.  .. but now Disney owns Fox so we could see them done right.  Finally.

Weird how the best most accurate Fantastic Four movie so far has been the Roger Corman one that they decided was too awful to release.

Am not a fan of DC Comic, Marvel, or any other superhero comic strip hero brought to life onto our screen these past few years. I tried to find some love for the Batman franchise, but I couldn't even get excited with The Dark Knight - which some have said is the best Batman of all.

Lego Batman is the best Batman of all.

Dark Knight had a wishy washy Batman that had to be held by the hand and told what to do, a semi-omnipotent Joker that barely resembled Joker, and stripped down all the larger than life fantastical elements that make Batman worth watching.

It was nearly impossible for me to even trying to form a smile in my face while watching this crap. Awful, simply awful. The "jokes" were so unfunny and predictable that I almost cried (the car smashing scene, to give a quick example).

They made similar comparisons with klaatu in the day the earth stood still.

But you don't like the movie, or the idea that its trying to represent? I think the first MBI was awesome. The second was pretty crappy, but the third raised the bar.

I believe that they are, at least, original and inventive movies, which is something quite valuable nowadays.
