Title: BLADE RUNNER 2049
Post by: Rev. Powell on October 15, 2017, 10:07:41 AM
No one else has seen it yet?

It amps up the atmosphere of the first one. Very arty. Plot is not bad but sort of slow-developing, focused more on mood. Fans of the first one should be pleased. I think it's the best movie of the year so far, but looks like it's going to be another cult thing and take a while to be appreciated.

Saw it yesterday.

Non-spoilers:   I agree, a very deliberately paced movie.   I thought the acting was top shelf, and the story and look of the movie a worthy successor to the first.   Unsettling movie in the right places, and there were some downright jaw-dropping scenes in it as well (see below).  Probably too long and thoughtful a movie for the 90 min Michael Bay movie crowd.

Spoilers:

A few thoughts.

1.  Jaw-dropping scenes:   number one, Rachel.  The re-compositing of the original character played by Sean Young.   I leaned forward in my seat as the character entered the room, and literally thought to myself, "Wonder how bad the uncanny valley will be on this one?  Will they show her face?"     And I felt nothing strange looking at the character.  Completely believable, as though they'd had Young shoot the scene as a callback, thirty years ago.  I've never seen that done so well before, and it'll fall into the category of new technical work like Gollum's character did.      Number two, the sex scene between the K and the street girl (with his AI playing a part in the scene).   There was one strangely imagined and unsettling scene.

2.  Cinematography was about as good as it gets.

3.  The story held up well, considering they brought Harrison back into it.  I thought Deckard worked well in the scenes as played.

4.  Restrained performance from Jared Leto!

5.  Movie's score very, very much an echo of the original, I liked it.

6.  Again the acting.   The actress who played the memory-maker did such good work -- the most human of the characters that K encounters, I'd say.

Obviously I loved the movie.  I second Powell's statement, best movie of the year so far.

Saw this on the weekend and it's definitely one to see at the cinema. There's a lot to like in it and a few things to not like. The more I thought about it the more I'm annoyed by a few choice (but it's not like the original didn't have it's issues either). Not sure if it'll rank as my favourite film of the year but it was certainly my most anticipated. Overall it just about hit my expectations, though gestating on it I think I'll like it slightly less on the second viewing.

The good:

Loved the soundtrack: Not as "Bladerunner-y" as you'd think with the appropriate amount of echoes of the original.
The visuals are mostly stunning and it's nice to see they've adapted the concept to suit the 30 years later side of things. Some sci fi feels like the technology stays the same but there seems to be actual growth here and further advancement.
That 'syncing' scene was incredibly well done and a pretty interesting concept.
Our key character arcs are pretty well handled.
Harrison Ford's best revival character yet.

The bad: Some plot points made me think 'what was the point of this?' or 'well that was convenient'
Not enough Harrison Ford/he's utilized not that well.
The lead 'big bad' is not as involved as I'd have liked and feels like they're saving more of him for a sequel.
The more I think about the themes and the character arcs the more straightforward and less ambiguous.
A slightly bloated cast. For a film that almost runs for three hours there is some character waste present/moments that just weren't given the right amount of time to develop...
Could've cut some of the characters down or merged a few together to make it tighter as a whole.

I think you'll miss a lot unless you have an awesome home theater. Be sure to turn up your speakers!

Missed it unfortunately, but went to see "The Square" yesterday instead. Now, that was different...

I will probably get round to watching this at some point. It has some mixed reviews and hasn't set the boxoffice alight (much like the original on first release).

I do wonder if there will be various "cuts" released in the future? - "Director's", "International", "Final" etc As we saw with the theatrical release of Bladerunner in 1982, many people did not like the voiceover or the happy-clappy ending. So if the original "2049" theatrical release doesn't do much for anyone (not least the fanboys and girls), I wouldn't be surprised to see a "Director's Cut" doing the rounds 2 or 3 years hence.

Watched this over the week. Much more slow paced than the first one. I felt all the way through they were attempting to ask "What does it mean to be human?"

Not a bad film by any stretch but if you like your movies action packed then this is not the one for you as you actually need to sit down, keep Mr Brain involved and pay attention. I can understand the mixed reviews as this isn't going to be everyone's tastes. Overall my view on it is that it's a good film, although not one I would sit and watch over and over again.

I think it's an accepted, that this film was never meant to  be a true blockbuster; it has its own niche market, just like its original. It's more than just science fiction in a Star Wars/Star Trek context; its far more challenging at a cerebral level. Patience is the key, as well as letting the eye-candy spx take a back seat. Which suits me just fine. But I just hope when I do finally get round to seeing it I am not disappointed or totally underwhelmed after so many years spent on the back burner.

Finally caught up. My God. This. Is. A. SLOW. Movie.

But that is just about the only thing wrong with it. Good story, interesting points, understated acting and the most brilliant cinematography this side of 2001 A Space Odyssey.

Much though I like movies who take their time, at 150+ minutes, the pace is too glacial.

I wanted very badly to like this one, but I just couldn't.  Too long, too rambling, too unfocused.  Visually beautiful in places, but just not my thing.

Sidenote: Anyone else realize that many of the subplots featured in this film heavily echo territory covered in the film Her with Scarlett Johansson?

The scene where K realized his AI didn't really love him and was just following a program really made the movie and possibly explained his indifference to his own death.

I'm just stoked that Roger Deakins finally won an Oscar.  :teddyr:

There are a lot of sci fi movies dealing with A.I. right now, it's going to change the world very soon and has interesting philosophical implications. Also see EX MACHINA.
