Title: Name something you miss dearly.
Post by: Svengoolie 3 on December 23, 2017, 11:15:35 AM
As someone living in modern America I dearly miss the days when I could access the news media and not be  assaulted by the sight and sound of an inflamed roaring anus with dentures.

I miss snow, especially around christmas time. We used to have lasting snow from November - April but not anymore for almost two decades.

I miss Gayle.  This is now the fourth Christmas without her, which also means without my brother, someone we both treasured and whose memory we kept alive between us.  If we weren't talking horses, cats, or dogs, we talked David.  I loved her from the minute I met her and we were instant friends (I was 7 or 8 and she was 15 or 16).  She loved chocolate.  She loved Monster movies.  She loved scary books.  She loved animals.  A match made in heaven.  She was my sister in law, but more importantly, she was my best friend.  I had to lose her to realize it.

The Grandparental Units.  They're all gone now.  I still go and visit them at their final resting place but it's not the same without them around.  Especially at Christmas.

First, I still and will always miss my Dad.  He died unexpectedly almost 10 years ago.  I also miss my best friend who died just over a year ago.

You know when I started this I was thinking of people discussing things they missed. I can't blame people for talking about loved ones now gone though.

To get it back towards the topic i intended, here are some things I miss:

The ability to go online without being constantly bombarded by an infinite numbers and types of ads.

The right to tell a corporation "My personal life is none of your damn business!" without instamaticaly being hit with devastating consequences.

Being able to buy and use something without being hit with constant demands for fees and more fees.

The right to tell police and courts "that's none of your business." without summarily being assaulted, beaten, kidnapped and caged until you obey, or being murdered if you refuse to submit to being assaulted, beaten, kidnapped and caged.

The days when you could exercise a right without risking your life and liberty.

The days when the american people had the guts and strength to say "No!" to the system and back it up.

Privacy.

Unions that protected workers rights.

Sometimes, I miss Houston, and I miss having a decent motorcycle, being able to cruise down Westheimer Blvd from downtown all the way out into wide open country...

My sister talked me into moving back to Virginia in the early '90s, because that's where the family is, then, they all started moving away, and/or passing away... The irony. Times I miss the family I knew before I moved to Texas...

I went off my meds last weekend & started thinking about the movie UHF, & with all the boring crap on cable, youtube & whatnot, I kinda miss regionally produced television shows...

Yeah, so is this; https://www.facebook.com/MidnightFrightsTV/ (https://www.facebook.com/MidnightFrightsTV/)
It was just in my ADHD, I was thinking about the wide variety of shows, from Bozo knock-offs, to Sailor Bob, some other locally produced educational shows I can't remember the name of... I was thinking about UHF & the breakdown of John Nash & came up with a skit for The Medicated Mathematician, when I remember this locally produced show called The Number Train, and this one episode where the host told the story about an orange whose lifelong ambition was to become a fraction, which, as you can guess, has a certain segway in it that bothered us all... Ah, Math...

This is my first Christmas without my Dad, whom I miss fiercely.  He was the model of everything a husband, father, pastor, and Christian should be for his 90 years on this earth.  Even as Alzheimer's decayed his mind and a variety of physical ailments attacked his body, he bore his pain with grace, dignity, and good humor.  If I can be half the man he was, I will consider my life well lived.

As for THINGS I miss - well, I really miss Hastings.  That store was my second home, my central entertainment source, and a great market to sell my books from.  There is nothing like it around now.  Half Price books is OK, but just not in the same league.

Talking to people.
Having ADHD & dysgraphia, getting an im feels every bit as awkward as having to take a dump in a junior high school boys room where none of the stalls have doors, & somebody you don't like walks in & decides to strike up a deliberately nettlesome conversation...

I miss my brother Richie.
I miss Tara Sue.
I miss my Ma.

My health. To be able to walk to the mailbox without having to eat a nitro pill.

News stands. That sell cheap comics and monster magazines and UFO paperbacks.

Double feature  Saturday matinees of cheap horror movies.

Being able to plug in a TV set without having to be hooked up to some device.  TRUE free TV.  HD TV ended all that.

I miss being able to just get up and go for a run and keep going for as long as I want. I used to think nothing of running four to six hours a day.

I miss enjoying my job.

And I miss the days before mobile phones when people couldn't get in touch with me 24/7.

I miss my job. I been unable to work for over 2 years.

I too miss the days before cell phones. I hate cell phones. I'll be talking to someone and they're like "Wait a sec-" and they start texting or jabbering on the phone.  :hatred:
I don't own a cell phone and I never will.

I miss having a dog.  I think this is the longest I've gone without a pet of some type.  (Can't really have one right now)

I miss the feeling of fandom, and it being more of a small thing.  Feels like these days not a lot of things can really be "Cult" or "Underground".  Plus with the internet, the worst behavior of some of these groups is constantly exposed.  So we're either meant to be associated with people like this, or liking the same things as they do.  And while I don't want to sound like a hipster, I completely understand the It was good before it got popular mentality.

Sven- I know the feeling. I don't talk about politics no mo' here, because during the election it got pretty heated.
I hate Trump with a passion. Every time he f**ks s**t up I wanna post it here. But I don't-because s**t stars flaming.
But I agree-I miss when politics was just crooked and not down and out evil, with the country run my a pathological lair racist idiot.

i miss my parents who i lost before i was 25, and my in laws who i lost before i was 51.
but mostly i miss the joy i had 2 months ago with my job. it's a new job, starting a new enterprise... and it's failing. big time. it makes my heart hurt. i really thought we could do it, make it a success, you know? but if the team ISN'T a team, it's a failure. god i HATE jobhunting in the cold... but i guess i should, asap.

I miss when I was a kid and we didn't have cable or the Internet and I was so excited when my dad would rent some VHS tapes over the weekend.  It was such an awesome treat.  As an added bonus, there were a few times that my dad found out TNT would be having monster movie marathons and he would take me and mom to a hotel and we would stay up all night watching them and eating junk food.

You made short films? Which ones?

I miss...

The world before September 2001.
747's as "the plane."
Game Boys
DOS compatible PCs
Backwards compatibility
VHS - even the thrift stores are clearing these out; mostly they only carry a few Disney tapes
Hastings
Video Stores in general
Video sections in major stores
Family sitcoms
A clean, well-kept local amusement park
A couple of malls which have been torn down
Scrub The Web and other small search engines

I am totally with you on Hastings.  I loved that store so much!
And our local store was doing great, too.  It was mismanagement at the top that bankrupted the chain.
Every time I pass the Planet Fitness that occupies its place now I just gnash my teeth!

I'm with you on that one. Boogie Records in Kalamazoo had all the obscure punk I couldn't find anywhere else in the 80's, plus underground comics and stickers and pot pipes...sigh.
Hot Wax in Paw Paw during the 70's was great to. I miss vinyl...CDs just scratch too easily. If I had a badly scratched record,I could just put a nickel on top of the needle arm-and it would play right through without skipping.

Sorry!  I am a few months into being in the family way so I'm also in a barfy and exhausted way most of the time.

To stick with the topic, I dearly miss music videos on TV.  I've been watching some on YouTube, but it's not the same as being forced to sit through videos I didn't want to see while waiting for the ones I did want to see only to realize that hey, I kind of like that Missy Elliott video.

I miss Moe's Bar here in Lawton. We have 3 so called "bars" in town now-2 are more resturants that serve booze and the other is a micro brewery frequented by yuppies.

Moe's was a BAR. It had a pool table, a juke box, and people got in fights and passed out. It was so fun.
This was back in the early to mid 80's. Then DeCoy Duck bought it and turned it into an over-priced resturant. Sigh.  :bluesad:

I miss high metabolism.  Being able to eat pretty much anything and not gain much weight, if any.  Being able to pick up an exercise regimen and just go with it, without killing myself.  My arms are still unable to stretch all the way forward without serious pain, after trying to pick up my exercise routine I did years ago.  Been aching for nearly a week.  I'll get back to it someday..

Yep. Owned by Moe Motyka-a distant cousin on my step mothers side.

The shots were cheap, there was old  60's and 70's music on the juke box. And a cigarette machine. And pickled eggs in a jar and pretzels and mini tacos.

Once Freddy Welburn drove his Harley threw the front door!

I got picked up by some dumb farmer a***ole and he threw me over 3 tables!

Good times.

I also miss a lot of my online friends I used to chat with a bunch during the day.

Dunno, but seems like not a lot of people just chat anyone online (or maybe I'm not looking in the right places.)  I know, I know it's mainly video chatting and s**t, but it seems like no one does that just to interact and meet new people, it's all perverts or girl who just want to talk to attractive guys.

I miss spending holidays with my relatives. When I was a kid, we typically had 20 or more aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, etc., at holiday gatherings. We still keep in touch (mostly via Facebook) and many of us still live within about 50 miles of each other but we just don't get together on holidays anymore. On my father's side of the family, the main reason is that my aunt (who was the glue that held everything together) died several years ago. We continued to have holiday gatherings for a couple of years after she dies, but then the tradition just faded away. There's no excuse for it, really.

Since i starting writing again, I have discovered that I miss when I was younger and used to write to some pen friends. Actually sitting down with pen and paper and writing. Someone emailing and texting just isn't the same.
