Title: Anyone good with tax stuff?
Post by: AoTFan on January 10, 2018, 11:21:46 PM
Just curious... trying to figure out if I should/even need to file this year as I've made so little...

Did some research and it seems to be if you've made less than $10,000 and are single you don't have to file.. but I'm not sure if I'm reading that right...

Hmm... nm, find another bit that says if you've made more than $400 from self-employment you do need to file..

(sigh) Get the feeling I'm gonna get it in the butt come tax time this year.

Are you self-employed? Did you get a 1099 or a W-2 from your employer? Generally, you don't need to file if you made less than the standard deduction & exemption. Per te IS: "You have to file an income tax return if your net earnings from self-employment were $400 or more. If your net earnings from self-employment were less than $400, you still have to file an income tax return if you meet any other filing requirement listed in the Form 1040 instructions." If your employer withheld taxes from your pay you should file anyway if you are eligible for a refund. If you qualify to file a 1040-EZ, the form takes about 3 minutes to complete . . . so why not? State requirements will vary.

No, did not get a W2 or 1099... I'm considered an independent contractor I believe.

They should give you a 1099 if they paid you $600 or more. If they are paying you "under the table" (which is illegal) they probably won't send you one.

Huh... they're not paying me under the table, it's through Amazon Payments, but I don't think they sent out a 1099... at least I don't remember getting on last year.  All I did was print out a copy of the total amount I made from their website and that seemed to satisfy everyone...

Anyway, hopefully it'll all work out.  Been trying to save for this time of the year, but you know how things are....
