Title: Tell us something strange and cool about yourself.
Post by: Svengoolie 3 on January 21, 2018, 08:47:03 AM
I am the only person I know who owns a fully functional honest to ghawd Giger counter.  It's a civil defense model from he 60's and it's built to last. Yep it still works.

It not only detects radiation,  it's actually radioactive. It has a 'check spot' on the side containing a tiny speck of radioactive ore.

People who know me are oddly not at all surprised I'm the only guy they know with a working Giger counter....

I located and helped excavate a 50 foot Tylosaurus skeleton in 2001.  It is in the paleontology lab at SMU today.

Wow, something strange and cool about me that I havn't already posted up here?

When I was stationed down the Falklands, one of my responsibilities was to keep all the devices that required batteries supplied with them. When a group of women heard this was my job, several of them offered to do anything I wanted in return for keeping them supplied with some for themselves.

I turned them down on the basis none of them had a grill and thus couldn't make me cheese on toast.

Strange: I don't recognize old classmates on sight. They always get upset because they sure as hell remember me. I should note that I never went to any of our class reunions because I never had the desire to see my old classmates again. Ok, maybe it's a psychological thing.

(Un)Cool: I don't brag about myself online or in real life.

My cousin Chelsea is a hula dancer. Our family name Hadrick is an Americanized version of the same name as some Nazi guy so if you think about it...she's a Nazi hula dancer!

I was born in the city of Bulawayo in what was then Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe: the name Bulawayo means "place of the killing" in translation.  :buggedout:

I grew up during a violent civil war: not pleasant.

I am 100% percent African and proud of it.

I live in Pretoria, South Africa which is not a sh*thole.

I have religious beliefs and am a proud member of the LGBTIQ community: I am the B part of that.

I am a qualified film projectionist: I can't do DCP to save my life.

I am a film archivist by trade: lazy bugger by inclination.

Okay, what I posted up there was my "cool" and as for my strange....

As you veterans here remember, when I was four I told everyone my grandson used to show up and teach me how to read. Everyone I told, the adults, sort of went, oh-how-cute, ha&ha, except my cousin Dana, who was eight, and she called me a psychob***h, maybe the first time I ever heard the bee-word to that point. Another cousin of mine, Alison, three years older than me said I had a cool imaginary friend.

All I know is to this day I remember I'd wake up some nights, and there he'd be, looking like family and totally unthreatening, this middle-aged man who told me he was my grandson. I loved when he arrived, and he showed me how to read, so that, yes, I was reading all kinds of things at age four, including my dad's copy of The Hobbit (which I didn't finish then, I admit). Either my descendant traveled back in time or it was one heck of a realistic imaginary playmate, and if it was all in my head, how'd I learn to read on my own?

He said, "Write things down for us."

So I have ever since, meticulously, hopefully the right stuff, and yet....why? Do I truly on some level believe that was anything but a fantasy in my imaginative little mind?  Or was some man truly entering our house and getting me hooked on phonics? Creepiest possibly, I guess.

Anyway, this event fits the description of strange, so, there ya go.

I can walk on my hands, especially going upstairs (but not down - far too dangerous). And I can touch the tip of my nose with the tip of my tongue.

That is all, lol
