Title: Low Budget Animated Films That Don't Suck
Post by: Olivia Bauer on February 04, 2018, 08:26:33 PM
My next review is "Hoodwinked!" an absolutely terrible and hideous animated film from 2005.
I find it hard to believe that even with a budget as low as $8M that they can't make this look less hideous.
If you want a reference of how bad the animation looks:

If I remember right, Hoodwinked was fairly successful when it came out. Low Metascore (45), but Imdb rating's not too shabby (6.5/10): http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0443536/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0443536/)

To answer the thread's title, I'd suggest: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092695/?ref_=nv_sr_1 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092695/?ref_=nv_sr_1)

Hoodwinked was successful but it was a piece of s**t. When Hoodwinked Too! came out everyone went, "Not falling for this s**t again." and it was a huge failure.

I'm assuming these were low-budget, even adjusted for inflation.

Heavy Metal http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082509/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082509/)
Fire and Ice http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085542/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085542/)
Wizards http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076929/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076929/)
The Lord of the Rings http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077869/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077869/)

Yep,  heavy metal had a limited budget.  It was so limited it even ran out of money,  Hence the cheap  rushed ending where the house is an exploded model and not animated.

Fun fact:  It's widely accepted that Ralph bakshi made 'wizards' mostly as a way of practicing for his LotR movie.

Yellow Submarine - Wasn't this fairly low-budget? I's basically a collection of trippy music videos with a loose plot to hold them all together, but it's fun if that's what you expect. (Assuming you have nothing against the Beatles.)

ALLEGRO NON TROPPO - Italian animator Bruno Bozzetto's answer to Disney's FANTASIA:

There's a longer version with live action connecting stapstick segments where a conductor forces slave-like animators and musicians to make the movie.

If live-action-animation combinations count, I'd suggest the Wizard of Speed and Time.

I have no idea if this qualifies, but FANTASTIC PLANET is special.

Twice Upon a Time

Notable for being a Lucusfilm production and its cut out art style.  Most of the dialogue was also improved much like the approach  Rick and Morty would later use.  You can tell from the trailer its one of those films that has a specific sense of humor.
