Remember the Alamo?

On this day in 1836, the Alamo fell, and men gave their lives for self-determination and resistance to the dictator Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, who nullified Mexico's beautiful democratic constitution, established absolute rule under his own tyrannical authority, and from the Yucatan to the Red River proceeded to enact a ruthless policy of human rights violations seldom equaled in the western hemisphere, as part of which, this cruel bigot set upon a policy of ethnic cleansing among Texican "dreamers" who were lawfully dwelling on lands promised them under Mexican law.

After literally drawing a line in the sand near the start of the 13-day seige, the pro-democracy defenders of a fortified mission complex in San Antonio de Bexar, including, lest we forget, a number of Spanish-speaking Mexicans who opposed the usurping dictator Santa Anna, chose death as fighting men rather than submit to probable execution as "pirates" under Santa Anna's past policy of execution of prisoners of war: yet another brutality of this honorless tyrant, who disregarded all civilized conduct according to the ancient customs of conflict.

The roughly two-hundred and fifty Texican defenders made their assailants pay dearly for their lives, killing an estimated six-hundred Mexicans before the last of them were bayonetted and beaten to death inside the long barracks on the mission's grounds following the Mexican's sneak attack under cover of darkness. Their bodies were then heaped in the foreground of the mission and burned, though their memories live on, inspiring to this day all those worldwide who hold certain principles above even life itself.

Remember the Alamo!

I know almost nothing about the Alamo other than the "remember the Alamo" line that I picked up somewhere along the line. Interesting, I need to read up on this, thanks for reminding, ER!

To be fair, Santa Anna did let the women & children leave before the attack, and after the attack he still didn't kill the two women and 3(?) children who stayed behind.

On a side note a few of the Alamo's defenders (Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie, Davis?) may have surrendered, only to be executed later. (Which was probably against the Mexican constitution.)
