When it came out Fox did a test to see how closely people were paying attention to the movie. They tracked snack sales; few people left the film to get more popcorn, so chances are they watched it to the end & lived. ;)

Multiple times. It's fantastic, a true cult classic! Definitely belongs in the "good movies" section.

agreed Rev. a bizarre movie but definitely a good one...

I watched it after reading an interview with Jello Biafra from the Dead Kennedys where he said it was his favourite movie of all time

Must admit, they don't do surrealism on this scale anymore...

One of my favorite movies as a kid. Hans Conreid was great in it.  I'm 62.

Is it atomic? :)

Apparently, Dr. Suess hated this movie; the studio asked him to make too many changes to his script. Convinced him to never work on another feature-length film, and he left this one out of his autobiography, if memory serves.

Too true.

Hans Conreid is great in it. This and is voicing of Captain Hook "Row for the ship! Row for the ship!" in the animated Peter Pan makes one wish he had done more comedic villains. For the other side of him, as comedic hero, then see him in Siren of Bagdad, where with hiss comedic sword fight with Charlie Lung (IMHO) has to be one of the great swordfights, dramatic or comedic, in films.

And Dr. Seuss not only hated the finished film, he disavowed it, When the local dialing for dollars show aired the film, he, as he lived in the area, was invited to come on the show and talk about his role in writing it, and he refused.

Unfortunately, a film that was just out of its time.

The Svengoolie show kept saying they had to take out "The Subversive Stuff"... I keep wondering what that means...
