Title: RIP Stephen Hawking
Post by: Raffine on March 13, 2018, 11:15:13 PM
Famed astrophysicist and surprising pop icon Stephen Hawking has passed at the age of 76.

https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/stephen-hawking-dead-obituary_us_55e9fa97e4b03784e275e7c1 (https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/stephen-hawking-dead-obituary_us_55e9fa97e4b03784e275e7c1)

It nothing else, it's remarkable he survived so long with ALS, which is a terrible, usually quick-acting condition.

That's depressing. I mean, I guess I shouldn't be surprised given his physical state but it's still strange to read that.
This sucks.  :bluesad:

I hope he died in England instead of America so no religious nuts can protest at his funeral claiming he's in he'll for being an atheist.

Someone I unfriended on fb a while back, but Kristi is still friends with posted a long criticism of Stephen Hawking based on the help he got for dealing with his condition while she's been struggling to get any help. Her condition is at least partially self inflicted and much milder than what he had. It was nice to hear that people have been pulling her up on it and pointing out that it isn't Prof Hawkings fault that she isn't getting the help she thinks she is entitled to.

I salute someone like Hawking who didn't let his disability destroy his ability to enjoy and take part in life and he leaves a legacy that will be remembered for a long time.

Agreed: RIP, Prof. Hawking.

I will always remember him in one of the few Star Trek TNG episodes I could stand watching where he played himself alongside Albert Einstein and Isaac Newton.

Another thing i will always remember him for is his championing of the ice-bucket challenge for ALS: he begged off due to bronchitis he had just gotten over but nominated his kids to do it in his place.  :teddyr:

I admired his ability to have fun with life despite his condition.  His guest turns on BIG BANG THEORY always left me chuckling.

Sadly the ''Hawking is in hell'' memes have already started.  :bluesad:

There were nuts on the other side saying the same thing about Billy Graham, there are always assmonkies that use tragedy to their own ideology without any sense of respect or decorum.

BUUUUZZZZZZ! FALSE EQUIVALENCY!

Graham spent decADES  sewing hate and division, attacking people of different religions, sexual orientations, political views, etc. Hawking did not spew hatred and intolerance based on 2,000 year old mythology, there is no equivelance between the two.

Also, graham preached the bible, which states you shall reap what you sew. Hawking did not sew hate and intolerance, graham did so it's fitting he reap such. It's not fit for hawking to.

Are they a false equilivancy?

Both made statements based on their assessment of reality for and against groups of people.

Yes.
Both made statements based on their assessment of reality for and against groups of people.

First off hawking made  statements based on verifiable data and reviewed research.

The people who are having joygasms over hawking's death and imagined suffering in hell are basing their statements on 2,000 year old bronze age stories that were collected with the intent of creating a sociopolitical power block as Constantine did and have been largely disproven upon study. For example, despite the views that hawking's critics hold to believe you cannot drink poison and not die due to strong faith, there is no firmament above earth holding water, etc.

Hawking did not take delight in human suffering.

Those who are currently rejoicing in imagining his in agony now clearly do.

Keep in mind people who believe a religion have a reason to do so; saying anything else discounts their intelligence. One must consider an opponent intelligent and reasonable before debating with them, or one comes off as a prick who's only spouting one's own belief https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/belief. (https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/belief.)

As for the specifics of a belief system...that's beyond the scope of this thread and this forum. I'd try https://groups.google.com/forum/# (https://groups.google.com/forum/#)!overview for that subject.

Two moments shape Stephen Hawking in my mind.

1st. Even in the 24th century, he was thought of highly enough, that he was invited to sit in on the poker game on the holo deck of the USS Enterprise. The only other Earth scientist who had such appeal was Sir Isaac Newton, who was also there.

2nd. He was one of the few men of science who was opposed to seeking to make contact with other alien life forms out there in the universe. Not because he did not believe that there were no other alien life forms out there. Not because he believed that they were not more advanced than us, but because the believed such alien life forms would be hostile to us here on Earth.

R.I.P Stephen

Yeah, I always felt the same about alien life. Its naive to think that aliens would not be hostile. Ill start a new thread on this subject. To honor to memory of the late great Mr. Hawkings, I shall spend at least 3 hours scooting around in an office chair while speaking in a robot voice. ........Too soon?
