Title: Your hometown?
Post by: Trevor on March 15, 2018, 05:59:28 AM
I might have posted this before but anyway.

I was born here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulawayo (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulawayo)

The streets in that city are so wide you can turn a truck around easily, no problem.  :teddyr:

I grew up here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gweru (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gweru)

It rolled up its' sidewalks at 6 pm

Trust an African to have two home towns instead of one.

Lawton, Michigan. Pop. about 1,900.
I been here since 1970.

Nothing much here. You can walk from one end of town to the other in about 15 minutes.
We do have some pretty bars, though!

I was born in East Orange, NJ (now, a shambles, maybe better than it was when I lived there decades ago).  I live in Monmouth County, very near the sea.

Höchstadt a.d. Aisch (Bavaria, Franconia)
Pop.: 13.319

Those small houses are Bierkeller (beer cellar). That's where people keep their beer (in the cellar!). Bierkeller are privat, and are meant as a weekend getaway (to get drunk). Some have bedrooms and there's usually a kitchen and a bigger room for parties or for Brotzeit (traditional German "time for a savory snack")

They tore down the restaurant, but the sign is still there. Sort of like a local landmark. They also tore down the Ship restaurant in Lynnfield.

My hometown is Louisville, KY. I was born here but moved away as a child and grew up all over, in Texas (a couple of tours), North Carolina, Delaware/Pennsylvania (a couple of tours). Back now, though it will never truly feel like "home."

We're famous for a horse race and baseball bats. Also as the birthplace of Muhammad Ali (and Hunter S. Thompson, and Jennifer Lawrence). More importantly, we're the capital city of bourbon country.

I actually met Ali-in 1985 I was working at Packers Pie plant (we made pie filling) and Ali had bought stock in it. So he came in and Dwayne Packer gave him a walk through tour. Me and my buddy Tom were in the cook room-and we talked to him a few minutes! We were big fight fans (the only TRUE sport-IMHO), . A nice man. He even showed us the butterfly move! It was almost like a moonwalk! Amazing. Tom-looking at me- "He's f**king floating!"
Ali-back in the day-would smooth on back and then-BAM-jump up and sting like a bee! He was the man!
I gotta start a thread about boxing.

Which one?

As my late father spent 32 years in the U.S. Navy, ere he retired, we moved around a bit as a family.

Bremerton (Washington)
Tacoma (Washington)
Port Hueneme (California)
Waukegan (Illinois)
Newport (Rhode Island)
Chula Vista (California)
San Diego (California)

and then I went to school in both . . .

Parkland (Washington)
Cleveland (Ohio)
Denton (Texas)

Philadelphia, PA.  Land of the cheesesteaks, scrapple, Wawa, hoagies and a dozen other things or so.

I've since moved to the burbs, about twenty minutes away.

I lived near West Chester for three years. I miss the food sometimes. I can find decent cheesesteaks sometimes, but it seems that no one outside of the area understands how to make a proper meatball sandwich.

Don't forget Trevor, you have a steak in this conversation too. You pepper it up a bit with your presence, which I find to be a little saucy.

I have loads more of these comments. Tuna in later for more. :P

I like them with whole meatballs, provolone, and a crusty Italian bread. Like a good version of the one Subway offers.

I like to claim Guntersville, AL - with its beautiful lake, quaint historic downtown, diverse population, breathtaking natural scenery - as my home town. We lived a block from the lake and could walk there in about five minutes.

We also had the wonderful locally owned Lake Theater. The owner Bill Harris and his wife ran the place and would not only show the latest near-great films they could get but also had special day long Saturday movies and cartoons for kids - including lots of current monster and horror stuff like the Hammer films and the Godzilla movies. There were even a few special spook shows with LIVE MONSTERS running around during a movie. It was my favorite spot in town, after the lake.

Truth is: we moved there when I was about five years old.

My REAL hometown is a ugly nest of rabid racists called Sylacuaga, AL, most famous for its abandoned cotton mills, destitute neighborhoods, and  having a meteor hit a landy sleeping on her couch back in the 50s.

Sylacauga was in the news again several years ago when a couple of Good Ol' Boys thought some Sissy Boy was lookin' at 'em funny so they burned the poor guy alive on a tire fire.

My relatives who lived there thought my dad was CRAZY for moving us away from this particular hell hole.

Some of 'em still do.

ahh, i thought you meant the subs with the meatballs that are as big as my face, so they have to be sliced, lol! a BIG yaybo on the provolone and crusty bread!
i DO make the ones with whole meatballs ,when my hands are up to rolling them. hubby doesn't"get" the whole provolone thing, he puts shredded cheddar on his. and he puts them on soft hotdog rolls too. then wears them, lol!

Been out that way a few times.  Some friends went to the college out there, and some of my aunt's in-laws lived that way so we'd go for Thanksgiving, etc.  Pretty nice area.

There's a certain way you make a meatball sandwich.  Funnily enough there's a bunch of Subway joints here, but I don't know ANYONE who goes there because these parts were pretty much where the Hoagie/Sub/Meatball thing was invented and Subway is just a pale imitation.  Most everyone goes to the mom and pop shops.  And really, it comes down to the type of bread you use, and the type of sauce.  The best tasting bread here is Amoroso's and a few places have had the bread overnighted in other cities to make 'legit' cheesesteaks.
