Title: the BANANA SPLITS (1968-1970)
Post by: RCMerchant on June 17, 2018, 08:43:05 PM
I hated this show.
Back when all the hippy culture had soaked itself in popular culture and became mainstream (kinda like punk and rap did).
When you think of it, the Krofts  put all sortsa hippy-dippy kid shows on TV.
Now-I find it an interesting artifact, like LAUGH-IN and K-TELL records.

I still can't stand HR PUFNSTUF or LIDSVILLE.

That was just a smidge before my time.  I was just barely catching reruns of the CATTANOOGA CATS.  Or more specifically, the short MOTORMOUSE AND AUTOCAT.

And SPEED RACER was just starting to get notice in America:

I remember my mom not happy about me watching that show, that it was far more violent than other shows-- she wasn't wrong!  People got shot, run over, run off the track, blown up and KILLED!  Tom And Jerry would have all that stuff happen to them and worse, but it was exaggerated to the point that it was silly and they'd always come back from it.  I wasn't so stupid I couldn't recognize the differences between exaggerated, realistic and REAL violence.
Of all the kids variety shows the Banana Splits had one of the best intro songs (apart from Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Show's "Overture").

Ah, the Hudson Brothers, from my hometown of Portland, Oregon!  Bill Hudson married Goldie Hawn before her and Kurt were together, and he later married "Shirley" Cindy Williams!

The voice of Optimus Prime, Peter Cullen, was on their RAZLLE DAZZLE SHOW.

They also starred in the dumb horror spoof comedy HYSTERICAL (1983).

I wasn't a big fan of Fleegle, Bingo, Drooper, and Snorky . . . but I liked the other stuff on the show like DANGER ISLAND and the THREE MUSKETEERS and ARABIAN NIGHTS cartoons.

The gorilla-like "Split" member with the giant teeth scared the crap out of me when I was a kid. I refused to watch the show because of him.

Remember during the summer when they would start showing previews of the new Saturday morning programs that would start in the fall? I would get really excited and wait impatiently for the first Saturday when all the new shows started. I'd get out of bed early and watch the new shows all morning.

They did the same thing with prime-time network shows: "Coming this fall . . ."

I only know of this show from this cover of the theme by Liz Phair and Material Issue.  It was an album in the mid-90s with then-current rock and punk and grunge bands doing versions of late 60s and mid 70s cartoon theme songs.

By 1977 I was pretty much done with Saturday cartoons.  I was 15! I was riding my bike everywhere, and fishing and helping my buddy Nick and his Dad on they're farm.
But in the winter, I would sit with my little brother Richie and watch crap like ELECTRA WOMAN AND DYNA-GIRL or BIGFOOT AND WILDBOY
