Title: VILLAGE OF THE GIANTS (1965)
Post by: RCMerchant on June 28, 2018, 12:01:10 PM
This movie is fascinating on a number of levels.
First- the cast.
.Joy Harmon-She was the girl washing her car in COOL HAND LUKE!
.Beau Bridges- yes, THAT beau Bridges. He's plays the snotty leader of the teenage giants.
. Ron Howard- ya, know, Opie. The director too.
.Toni Basil- "Oh Mickey, he's so fine-!" fame. She was in EASY RIDER,too she was the other girl with Karen Black in the graveyard/freakout scene.
.Mickey Rooney Jr.- Looks exactly like Mickey Rooney.
.Tommy Kirk (of MARS NEEDS WOMEN fame)
.the Beau Brummels

2. It's just so stupid.
3. There is no #3. Unless you want to count the giant duck.

Interview with the writer:

Some cool quotes:

Quote
Did you suspect it was a pile of crap while it was being made, or did you have to see it to find out?

No, I knew there was nothing much anybody could do with it. I'm glad Ron Howard has gone a long way from there-as I have, too, I like to think! I don't know him personally but I'd like to run into him one day and say, "Hey, you played in the first picture I ever wrote. Please forgive me!" [Laughs] Village of the Giants was probably the worst motion picture that anybody ever wrote in his life.

Quote
Did somebody rewrite what you wrote?

Nobody else wrote it, I did the writing of the screenplay. But the basic concept was stupid, the concept I had to work with. There's no way you can make a thing like that believable. Today I would have made it very much tongue-in-cheek, made it as a joke. But in those days I didn't have the sense to realize that was the only way it could work. So I just went ahead with it as straight drama, "Something terrible has happened!", and hoped that everybody would buy it.

Did you like working with Gordon?

Yes, he was okay, he was a nice guy. (He gave me one of my first [screenwriting] jobs, so I've got to like him!) I got along well with Bert, no problems there at all. I did ask him what on earth made him buy a pile of crap like this in the first place.

Actually, he gets screen credit for writing the story, so you were talking about his pile of crap.

It was originally based on the novel Food of the Gods by H.G. Wells. Of course, H.G. Wells is one writer and Bert Gordon is another! (You could say the same thing about me, of course!)

It was apparently the 1st movie he wrote, tho he did act before.

i LOVE this movie, especially the duck! my fave scene, though, is when they turn giant and use theater curtains and such as clothes. snappy outfits for  giant teenage bimbos incorporated!
and of course, anything with the beau brummels or dick dale and the deltones are faves for me, i'm a huge fan of surf music. got to see dick dale and most of the original deltones about a dozen years ago, great concert. the venue actually made a beach on the dance floor, and most of the fans showed up in vintage swimwear, it was  a GOOD time!

I think I know what you mean, but to be clear BERT I. GORDON was the director.

You DON'T mention JOHNNY CRAWFORD!  That's him on JOY HARMON's bust... what a way to go!!
