Title: Best/worst bond movie?
Post by: Svengoolie 3 on July 12, 2018, 01:41:24 AM
Another user made a post about a bond movie i liked and i said so.

Now, what do you think were the best/worse bond movies?

If we split bond into pre Danial Craig reboot and post,  as I believe they should be due to the more serious tone of the post reboots, I'd say pre would be a tie between the man with the golden gun and thunderball. I think TMWTGG had one of the more 3d bond villains and arguably one of the best actors to appear in a bond movie. (BTW what idiot never cast peter cushing as a bond villain?!?! that man was born to be one...)

Thunderball had possibly the most believable evil villain scheme scenes in a bond movie. The way specter stole the bombs from the bomber with the gassing and water landing really made you believe it could really be done. I did not have to suspend my disbelief in that scene. They made it totally convincing. It was intelligently written and well filmed. I honestly wonder if nuclear powers of the day saw that movie and asked "How do we prevent that from happening?"

Post DC I would say that casino royale was my favorite, as it made bond much more human, and the torture scene with bond and ol' bleeding eye was possibly the most intense and well acted scene I'd ever seen in a bond movie. I don't know if even Saint Sean Connery could have done that scene as well as craig did even it would have been possible to film it when connery was 007.

Worst craig bond? Ehhhh, if I have to pick one, and I guess I do as I created this thread and should play by my own rules, it would be specter. Just because it came closest to the older bond movies which were often less serious than the new ones.

Ones I liked were DR. NO,  GOLDFINGER, THUNDERBALL, ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE, THE SPY WHO LOVED ME, FOR YOUR EYES ONLY, GOLDENEYE and LICENSE TO KILL.

I thought VIEW TO A KILL, TOMORROW NEVER DIES and THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH were pretty bad.  MOONRAKER was pretty dumb but I liked it at the time.  The others I'd seen were meh to passable, or kind of boring.  Some of the supposed classic Bond flicks I've either never seen or wasn't as impressed.

I think the best are Goldfinger and Skyfall.

The worst to me are Die Another Day and On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

Worst: I'd probably say "Never Say Never Again," but since that one is not part of the "real" Bond series, I guess I'd have to go with "Diamonds Are Forever," believe it or not. Connery was only in it for the paycheck at that point, and the forced attempts at light-hearted action comedy (a preview of things to come in the Roger Moore era) don't really work for me.

Best: I don't think I can do a definitive "best" out of all of 'em, but here are my faves of each "era" of Bond:

Connery: Goldfinger
Lazenby: OHMSS (haha)
Moore: The Spy Who Loved Me
Dalton: n/a (neither of his films were particularly great)
Brosnan: Goldeneye
Craig: Casino Royale

Everyone sh-ts on lazenby but I think he was an effort to humanize bond. He showed some real human emotions, like fear, when appropriate. Other bonds came off as essentially unbelievably fearless. Lazenby made bond a bit more human, something that did not recur until Craig's appearance.

OHMSS gets a lot of hate, but I thought it was pretty good for a first effort with a new star. If Lazenby had stuck around for more than one movie I think he might have developed into a decent Bond.

...besides, the back story of that film is fascinating. I absolutely love the idea that a random guy with no acting experience was able to simply walk in off the street and bulls*** his way into the lead role of a multi-million dollar movie franchise! Dude had balls of steel!

Unfortunately he opted to take the dubious advice of his manager and turned down a multi-picture deal because he was told that the 007 character would be "passe" in the new decade. Great career move there, pal. :D

I like 'Dr No'. Bond has a much harder edge to him in it. He is sarcastic and sneering. He makes a believable paid killer, and I felt the other films tended not to play up to this side of him quite as much, gradually getting more comedic until the whole Roger Moore era.

GOLDFINGER is my favorite, but I think ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE would be my favorite if Connery had been in it. I don't hate Lazenby by any means, but Connery is by far my favorite 007.

Worst is probably OCTOp***y. The entire fiasco with Bond in a clown suit was enough to bury that one.

GOLDFINGER is the best for me.
Worst? I dunno-I never seen any Dalton or Bronsan Bonds. I guess I would have to go with ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE. Just didn't do a thing for me.
