Title: The British Invasion
Post by: The Burgomaster on August 07, 2018, 08:08:24 PM
I remember being introduced to a lot of imported British comedy shows when I was a kid/teenager in the 1970s. Most of them were on PBS and some were a little more risque than the average American TV show. Some that I remember are:

* MONTY PYTHON'S FLYING CIRCUS (the grand daddy of them all - - I have the entire DVD collection)

* THE BENNY HILL SHOW

* THE GOODIES ("Goodie, goodie, yum, yum!")

* DAVE ALLEN AT LARGE

* THE TWO RONNIE'S

* FAWLTY TOWERS (with John Cleese)

And many years later, we got MR. BEAN.

Did you watch any of these? Which ones did I miss?

I never watched Are You Being Served. Wasn't a fan of The Young Ones (watched it maybe 2 or 3 times). I don't consider Dr. Who to be a comedy (not intentionally, anyway).

The avengers.

Blake's 7.

The Avengers is great (I have all the Emma Peel episodes on DVD). It has funny moments, but I don't consider it to be a comedy. Never watched Blake's 7.

Blake 7 was a sci fi drama. I watched it avidly, but I'd never consider it a comedy, unless you consider the special effects.

The topic was 'British invasion'.  You listed some dies,  I listed a couple shows that weren't comedies but we're British.

But my original post says, "I remember being introduced to a lot of imported British comedy shows . . ."

The Avengers and Blake 7 might not be British comedies, though they did have their comedic moments, especially The Avengers, but they are worth checking out anyway (IMHO.) Now here are some that have not been mentioned that are both British and comedies.

Doctor in the House (a TV series based on the film series)
Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin (with Leonard Rossiter who played the undertaker Sowerberry in Oliver!)
Keeping Up Appearances
On the Buses
Rising Damp (another one with Leonard Rossiter)

Then there are three whose titles I just can't remember, which could be hilarious at times.
--one about a trio of priests
--one about a superhero
--one about a female minister in a conservative country town.

But, (IMHO) stay away from The Last of the Summer Wine. While I liked most British comedies, or, at least found them bearable, I just couldn't abide that one.

I remember clips from a British talk show, with the Sex Pistols being "outrageous".
It all seems silly now- but back in the day it was news.

I would guess the trio of priests is Father Ted.
Could the superhero one be My Hero with the idiot hero Thermoman? Starred the youngest of the priests from Father Ted Ardel O'Hanlon.
And finally that has to be The Vicar Of Dibly with Dawn French.
