Well, I am annoyed!

I do not like Poppy Z. Brite, never have, and I like her even less now as Billy Martin, though I admire her courage in making this gender transformation. But that's neither here nor there. What is germane to my rant is exactly where homage ends and an act of literary theft begins.

The only thing Brite ever wrote that I did like out of all the grag of hers someone made me read back in high school was a short story variously entitled Swamp Foetus, and (a better re-titling) His Mouth Will Taste of Wormwood. It is about these sensuous gay men in the Deep South of the 1980s whose life of dissipation leads to ennui until they start raiding graveyards and undertaking archaeology-cum-necrophilia under the influence of absinthe.

I was captivated by this opium-like little story and loved certain lines from it, like her description of the "luminous" scent of magnolia blossoms in the humid Louisiana night. It was just so frickin' cool, these futureless souls bored with life seeking one dangerous thrill too many amid the decaying cenotaphs and tombs of Antebellum burial grounds. It was Spanish moss draped Southern Gothic at its finest and I bet I read HMWTOW ten times.

And then years in the future I came to find this tale of Brite's was an almost straight-up lifting of H.P. Lovecraft's The Hound. Not quite word for word but the plots are probably 95% identical.

If Brite had prefaced the story by saying, "This is in tribute to Lovecraft" then fine, but nowhere have I ever seen her do that. I've never seen an interview in which she discusses the story that includes her saying, "Yes, The Hound inspired me."

She just.....apparently wrote this story that reads like a slightly more R-rated re-telling of one of Lovecraft's lesser-known but completely brilliant stories, and that deeply rankles me.

I really miss the days when you could find an old UJM or riceburner in clean condition, running right for just a few hundred bucks... Nowadays, you're lucky to find some 2nd hand disposable Chinese bike that doesn't require a bank loan...

I've read that story. 

I actually bought a book that was titled something like Modern Horror Short Stories or whatever.  The whole book turned out to be various weird fetishy sex things with a slight horror tone to them.

I really hate it when I go to a party or meeting or something, an there's noplace to sit down, because even though there are plenty of coffee tables & coat racks & such, people just indiscriminately toss their stuff on every chair & sofa they see, until the whole damn place looks like somebody with a hording problem lives there.

My elder sister saga could write a book about how her kindness and flirty personality screwed her over both mentally and physically.

I shouldn't have to tell the new interns not to call me ma'am.  I need a drink.

You know what I hate? When people get ticked off for being called "Ma'me" or "Sir."

It's a sign of respect! It's in the Little Golden Book of Manners! Little Kids & Old People alike get that! Call them "ma'me" or "sir" & they smile! If they're older they'll say you're unusually respectful! The only people who don't are 15-60 year olds who just wanna feel young! They're acting too young; like a rebellious teenager! Stop it! ~ I never have and never will use the "memories" feature, no matter how many times Facebook wants me to. It's annoying enough that people in my feed use "memories" more than actually posting new stuff. I honestly don't care what you did two summers ago because I already read the very same thing two summers ago.
~ Nope, I won't contribute to "my story" and I won't watch anybody else's "my story" because I've read "your story" before. There's really no need and no point in doing this. Jeez.
~ I won't adjust my ads to "my likings" because I don't like ads. It's unavoidable so post whatever f**king ads you like. I DON'T CARE.

I'm so damn sick of ads and fees everywhere I go in. Modern corporate America.  Ads!  ADS! ADS!!!  CHOKING MY TABLET!. JAMMING UP MY SCREEN!  LITERALLY CYBER ABDUCTING ME FROM A SITE I WANT TO SEE TO ONE I WISH WAS IN HELL! 

Oh,  don't like ads?  Give us money and we'll show you a few less!  Fees! FEES!. FEES!!!  Republicans call poor people who can't get jobs 'takers' AND AN AD CUT ME OFF TYPING THIS!!!  It's big business and the bloodsuckers running them that are the real takers with their hands out! Everywhere you go there's a business with it's hand out for a 'fee'. Our automated system can't solve your customer issue and you need to talk a person?  FEE! We screwed up your order and you need it fixed? FEE!  Something under warranty failed and you expect us to fix it free?  HA!  FEE! FEE!!  FEE!!! 

People look down on 'socialists' in America.  Well,  I'll tell you it's the unregulated corporate controlled capitalism in America that drove Me to ''Socialism''.  Almost literal assault from hyper aggressive ads constantly,  constant scams,  rip offs,  lies and cheating all legal because they're being done by corporations and a for everything possible.  Yeah,  i'm a little sick if capitalism,  American style.

As had been said several before use a free ad blocker and you will not have this problem. I've been doing it for years and don't get bothered with half the s**t you whine about. Also selecting block pop ups helps, although not as much as an ad blocker.

I don't even have an ad blocker and don't have this problem, and my computer is about 6 years old!
Of course, I limit to where I go. I come here, go to Tumblr, and research old magazine and newspaper archives for photos.
I cancelled my Facebook, and rarely went there when I did have it, but everything you post there will go straight to an ad agency that will sift it for key words, and related ads will end up popping up on your computer no matter where you go.

I wish my mind can stop giving me doomsday thoughts of when ny elder sister was getting treatment for heroin and becoming the nastiest person on Earth.
And to stop giving me dreams of my elder sister's ex (who I believe was giving her heroin without her consent) shooting me with a gun.

Before you wish away a system, make sure you truly have something better to replace it. History might suggest it wouldn't be socialism.

Turns out in bad a virus that was putting my tablet in assault ad mode.  Had to factory reset it to stop it.  Made me imagine a movie where a. Couple people die because their. Smartphone was. Crippled by a virus and they couldn't call for help,  and someone close to them decided to hu t down the virus writer.

Still there are too. Many ads and fees in America.

WHY do so many recipes have onions in them without explaining that you can get the FLAVOR WITHOUT the slimy texture using onion powder??? i DETEST that texture, same for bell peppers or mushrooms.  :hatred:

Here's my rant, I think we ("we" as in people in general) complain WAAAY too damn much.

Gripe, gripe, gripe, whine, whine, whine! 

I mean, yes, we all have the right to say what we want, free speech and all, and NO I wouldn't take that awhile, but I also have to say I think sometimes we (and yes,  there are times I would include MYSELF in that list) need to take a tall glass of "Shut the f**k up and realize how GOOD you have it."

Seriously, look around you:  do you realize how AWESOME things would seem to someone who lived say, just a few centuries ago?  (Hell, probably even just a few decades ago?)  For example, go into the bathroom, pull a switch and what do you have?  Virtually ENDLESS water!  Wasn't too long ago if you wanted water, your ass would have to go outside and travel to the local well and get water from which would have God knows what was in it, transport it BACK to the house and drink that.  (Or get that nice fresh creek water!)

And yes, I know, even now someone's thinking of this place or that where the water doesn't "taste good", but I say with few exceptions (like Flint) I'd take my chances on the local water supply than I would most of the sources they had before indoor plumbing.

Or let's say you don't want to risk the local water... hey, fine, then you can go to this magical place that has TONS of drinkable items for sale.  Same place that has tons of FOOD you can buy and eat, none of this having to out HUNT or GROW your own damn stuff.  And hell, for the most part, you won't even have to wait that long to get it (unlike some countries where, if there even IS a store, you may have wait hours for a loaf of bread.)

But yeah, I get it though.... Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs... which basically says that when your basic needs for things for food, shelter etc, are meet then you focus more on the next level needs, and the level after.   But I wish more people would stop and reflect on how far we've come as a society, especially since there a lot of places still TODAY that don't have all the basic luxuries we take for granted.

Those horror stories about the evil of socialism in Scandinavia  and western Europe conservatives fertilize their crops of voters with?  Yeah,  no.

Socialism is something most people flirt with in college, but Sven, it doesn't work.

Socialism rewards lazy people and penalizes exceptionalism. It imposes very high taxes on people, usually 50%-90%, so that they cannot get ahead. It promises free health care but the result is typically a sluggish medical system that leaves the sick waiting a long time for services. Socialism leads to inefficiency, a lack of productivity, it inflates bureaucracies to the point of bloatation, with many departments within the government existing just to manage the bureaucracies that were created like a chain reaction.

Far from bringing a forward-moving revolution, socialism stifles creativity and innovation, sometimes freezing a country in time (think Cuba) or destroying it from within (Venezuela). Honestly, when was the last time something world-changing came from a socialist nation? It doesn't happen. The greatness in the world comes from capitalistic cultures.

The Soviet Union imploded, yet Russia today has more billionaires than anyplace on Earth, that is unless China very recently surpassed Russia's tally, and I doubt there were many billionaires under the old Maoist state.

Think about China. Up til a generation ago people were going hungry in the People's Republic, and so the government tried an experiment: it let farmers keep and or sell any crops produced above Party-set quotas, and suddenly with that incentive food production soared. That cracked open the doorway and today while China is still run by the Party, it is thriving under an economic system that has seen socialism largely cut loose.

Socialism tends to give too few people too much power. From the Iraqi and Syrian Baathists, to Stalin in the Kremlin, to the hate speech laws of western Europe that have people afraid to freely express themselves, socialism has a dangerous track record.

History argues strongly against the feasibility of socialism, Sven, and you should respect history's verdict.

We had "socialism" in the 40's thru to the early 80'd because the great depression was caused by greed and selfishness. FDR initiaqted the new deal to regulate big susiness, especially banks and wallstreet, to prevent anpother one and [rotect the american p[ublic from the financial pwer houses who cared nothing for the majhority of america people.

The new deal worked, we had no economica crisis or meltdowns until after the republiscum party began destroying it under reagan (SPIT!).

We went straight into the  S&L bailout crisis, then it was one economic disaster after another, with massive sums of money being taken from the people and put in the hands of the ultra rich. The socialist protecting and regulations of the new deal worked, the ending of them triggered decades of hardship, stagnation and misery got most Americans and you can tell your arguments against "Socialism" to the facts.

Unfortunately runaway capitalism is just as bad as unbound socialism. Both systems have their merits and drawbacks, and it is a shame people can't settle on some happy middle ground.

I think the best argument against socialism is the fact people who have lived under it have more often than not chosen to abandon it, and once abandoned it stays in the past.

Sven, you sound like Rush Limbaugh when you make up names for things. Hard to take you seriously when you sound like you're twelve years old. "Republiscum"? "Jack Prick"? You make yourself silly when I think you're aiming for profound.
