Title: If I Ran a TV Station...
Post by: Pacman000 on August 25, 2018, 04:13:34 PM
The TV board is sadly under utilized. So here's a topic that will hopefully catch everyone's interest. Most people will agree that there's never anything good on. If you owned a TV station what would you schedule?

I think I would play old serials during the day. They're rarely seen, & they take up a lot of time. Maybe old miniseries too. Or Long movies, like Ben Hur.

At night I'd try to create original programming. What programming I'd create I don't know. I suppose you can create almost anything against a green screen these days. Each show would need at least 45-50 episodes a year; I'm sick of long mid-season breaks. The extra few weeks could be filled with holiday specials or holiday movies.

Now's your turn, if someone handed you the keys to a TV station & gave you free reign to show anything, what would you show?

Hmmmmm....

Ok, I'll start with the Irwin Allen shows: Voyage To the Bottom Of the Sea, Lost In Space, The Time Tunnel and Land Of the Giants..

More classic sci-fi with Star Trek(original series), The Outer Limits, Battlestar Galactica(the revival series), Doctor Who and Space: 1999..

Horror and fantasy anthology shows: Twilight Zone(original), Boris Karloff's Thriller, Night Gallery and Tales From the Crypt..

Assorted horror shows: Kolchak-The Night Stalker, American Horror Story, True Blood, Penny Dreadful..

All of the classic Universal and Hammer horror/sci-fi films..

Silent classics on late Sunday nights..Three Stooges shorts and Abbott & Costello films..

Assorted cult films such as the ILSA films, women in prison, Blaxploitation films, Roger Corman, Al Adamson, Ed Wood, Jerry Warren and other odd filmmakers...

I'd try to brown nose some of the local indie producers & directors (and hopefully encourage many others to pull their crap outa the abyss of post production) by airing by air as much locally produced stuff as I could find.

I'd specialize in scifi,  horror, fantasy,  foreign films and series of that nature,  I'd do a live sf&f talk show,  maybe some other original programming by and for fans of the genres.

I'd show a lot of older stuff and maybe toss in some retro TV commercials. Maybe set it up like a day of programming that was typical in the 1970s:

* Early morning kids shows like Captain Kangaroo and Romper Room

* Afternoons would be soap operas (like reruns of The Guiding Light and One Life to Live) and game shows (like The Jokers Wild and Password)

* Late afternoon reruns of Merv Griffin and Mike Douglas

* Dinner time reruns of stuff like The Brady Bunch, I Love Lucy, Get Smart, and Gilligan's Island

* An 8:00 movie - usually a Clint Eastwood western or an old war movie, edited to fit into a 2 hour time slot (including commercial interruptions every 12 minutes)

* More reruns from 10:00 - midnight. Maybe some old cop shows like The Rookies, Kojak and Baretta

* Sign off with the national anthem at midnight, followed by a test pattern that would run all night

Gawd! Now I remember why I hated TV in the 70's!  :buggedout:

I dunno-the 3 Stooges and Laurel and Hardy alot...Hopalong Cassidy ,Gunsmoke and old westerns on Sunday afternoon. And old reruns of women's roller derby and midget wrestling.
Friday night would be cop movies from the 70's , blaxploitation films, and 1960's Hammer or AIP movies from the 60's and 70's at midnight.
Saturday would be old cartoons from morning 'till night. Ya know, Bugs, Tex Avery, Woody Woodpecker....
Saturday night would be Double Creature Feature with me as the host, dressed up like an idiot saying stupid s**t.
During the week, reruns of shows like MISSION:IMPOSSIBLE, DRAGNET, the ED SULLIVAN Show, documentaries...

If I ran a TV station I'd show classic commercials all the time. Ever consider what sociological treasures those things are? They're on a level with middens in identifying who we were in our cultural history.

I might also pay homage to everyone's favorite scene in American Gods and do some CGI shows with June Lockhart and Donna Reed and Ward Cleaver and other golden age sitcom A-listers nekked.

I think people would watch.

I'd also do vintage PSAs and save lives. This one would run hourly:

TBD TV goes ultra Indy every Saturday afternoon, with stuff like Warrioress or Squidman....

I think I'd do the sorta stuff that nobody's ever heard of 24, 7.

I mean we all know there's a healthy supply of it out there, just begging for somebody to click it on for a few minutes, then switch over to the local Doppler channel.....

I'd fit reruns of the Dick Cavett Show in there somewhere too.
And Kolchak: the Night Stalker, the old Planet of the Apes TV series, WONDER WOMAN!!!, them Aerobic shorts they had on HBO (I think!) circa 1981!

Every weekday about 6:00 PM I would play a Godzilla movie.

I would screen every single documentary, feature and newsreel we have here in the archives: I doubt we would run out of material to screen.  :teddyr:

I would have to have Benny Hill and Monty Python on at least once a week.

I would insist on showing reruns of THE GONG SHOW and the $1.98 BEAUTY SHOW.

I loved the Gong Show! I swear that Chuck Barris and the whole panel were numb on cocaine and drunk.

Also HOGAN'S HERO'S- because German accents are funny!
And LAFF-IN, the BANANA SPLITS, and the mighty ISIS!

Alternative idea: Get a bunch of TV shows which ran 2-3 years. Play one episode a week.

If a show ran two years it should have 40-60 episodes, & was at least sort-of popular. 40-60 episodes aren't enough for daily syndication, so they should be cheap to license, & fans might be eager to see them. Weekly airings should still give you about a year's worth of shows.

Assuming a 6-hour repeating schedule, where mornings repeat last night's programming, you'd need 84 series to make this work.

Call it TV-Rarities or RetroRarities.

It would probably look a lot like El Rey, but with more pre-1970s content.

I'd love to show old stuff that is "before my time" that was never around in reruns when I was growing up and I had to find in other ways.  RCMerchant mentioned Isis, which I found out about through tape traders at conventions.  I would never have learned about the magnificent series East Side/West Side, starring George C. Scott if not for one Social Work professor sharing trivia about "the only TV show about a social worker."  It's good stuff that there is already a following but never get air play.

Oh yeah-LOST IN SPACE, TIME TUNNEL, and LAND OF THE GIANTS.

Of course, once per year I would have a "Schlock Around the Clock" movie marathon. 24 hours of bad, low-budget and/or cult movies. As a gift to the TV station's loyal viewers, I would show them uncut and without commercial interruptions.

I'd do an orignal program called "Escape pod theater".  Every week like 4 people get together in a room (their escape pod)  and watch a bad movie while discussing it. Not quite mst3k,  they might raise issues about things in the movie.

12am: National Anthem (I remember when that would play before the channel would go off the air, I miss that.)
12am - 2am: Infomercials (Hey, there's some good stuff on those they help pay for the channel and can be good for a laugh or a drunk buy)
2am - 4am: Late night movie (Some cheesy Sci-fi movie, I used to watch these as a kid always great)
4am - 6am: Older TV shows (Andy Griffity, Leave it to Beaver, Gilligan's Island, that sort of stuff)
6am - 7am: News
7am - 9am: Morning Cartoons
9am - 11am: Game Shows (Price is right, Let's make a deal, these kind of things)
11am - 1pm: Infomericals
1pm - 3pm: More Older (yet modern) TV shows.  Matlock, Murder She Wrote, ETC
3pm - 5pm: Afternoon Cartoons
5pm - 7pm: News
7pm - 9pm: Game Shows (Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy, reality TV *think Titan Games*)
9am - 10pm: Adult cartoons (Rick & Morty, Archer, those type)
10pm - 12am: Late Night TV

Of course that's for Weekdays.  Weekends are too much to think about right now.

Not an entire schedule, but this would be a good block:

The A-Team
Knight Rider
McGuyver
AirWolf

Call it the '80's Action Attack.

Personally, I would switch Airwolf with Magnum P.I. but otherwise I like it.
