Title: RIP John McCain.
Post by: Svengoolie 3 on August 25, 2018, 08:31:03 PM
John McCain bad died of brain cancer at 81.

I do mourn his passing. He was one of the very last members of his party to show a single shred of human decency.

I think that despite my disagreements with him he may have redeemed himself with one of his final major acts.  https://www.businessinsider.com/senate-health-care-bill-vote-mccain-2017-8 (https://www.businessinsider.com/senate-health-care-bill-vote-mccain-2017-8)

Out of the whole crew, JOHN McCAIN was the only one I liked.

I knew he wasn't going to win in 08 - but I voted for him anyway!  A decent and honorable man.

I totally disagree. he supported every military intervention from Kosovo to Iraq and Libya and even had the temerity to hang out with jihadists in Syria. I guess others have a different definition of "decent" than I do. I don't think murder and death are very decent

also reagan hated him for running out on his first wife when she got in a car crash.

I might not have liked his politics (hell, I don't like most ANY politics), but he was a man of convictions and a war hero. We need more men like that in Washington.

A clip they keep playing in the news to show how nice he was, was of the racist old hag telling him she doesn't trust Obama because "He's Arab", and McCain telling the Krusty K*nt that isn't true.
The really sad thing is THAT WAS MY HIGH SCHOOL! I'm not joking! McCain did a rally at Lakeville South High School and the next day in the news they're playing that clip. It was f**king embarrassing.

I still remember that day pretty well. We had to go through metal detectors to get into the building. I heard rumors of snipers on the roof but that was probably bulls**t. I remember on the bus ride home a friend of mine waved at one of those guys that wore a black suit and the dude flashed the "Peace sign".
Lakeville is kinda stereotyped as being a mega conservative town in Minnesota, which is a blue state. Sadly, I can't disagree. A lot of students were wannabe hillbillies. Allegedly, some students put a confederate flag on the flag pole and made a black girl have a panic attack.

Overall I didn't like McCain very much. Almost everything I can say about him is negative. But I kinda pine for the days when politicians acted like him. Most detractors of Obama today would have taken the "Arab" line and ran with it. He also had the courage to vote against Trump. People branded him a "Party traitor". f**k that. He used common sense and didn't capitulate to what everyone else says he should have done. I didn't like him, I never will, but man at least he didn't get into literal dick measuring contests.

Also, a really weird thing to note, McCain's mother Roberta is still alive.

I might have not agreed with his policies, but he was one of a few GOP members to stand up against Trump, and he was for the country well being (sans bombing every country)

Whatever we may think about him, and like many here, I did not always agree with him politically, but I liked him as a man. For we have here one of the most momentous passings of recent memory. Not only a passing of a patriot and a politician, but the passing of the old Republican Party as we knew it. What it will become under Trump, no one knows. R.I.P. John. You will be missed.

he wasn't part of the old republican party as we knew it. they all hated him. He was a "republican" the press adored because he really wasn't one

He replaced Barry goldwater as senator from Arizona. THAT was the republican party Taft, Goldwater, reagan, etc

Banned Sarah Palin from his funerals...
This guy really wanted to burn his bridges.

Palin didn't spit on McCain the way Trump has . . . but, at the same time, she has become a shameless shill for The Donald.
And we don't know what may have passed between the two of them privately.  Seems there was no love lost.

You know McCain was going to ask Joe Lieberman to be his running mate but his "advisors" talked him about of it because lieberman was a moderate democrat, and, even more unappealing to many of the deep red state  republican voters, a ewJ-ay.

I wonder of Mccain didn't want the mama grizzly at his funeral or that was his family's idea?

Maybe he didn't like the place those bridges lead to now...

Anyway, this is a tribute to him.

Palin was the main reason why he lost the election imo.

I'd have to go with El Misfit. Palin seemed to derail his entire campaign and was his achilles heel thoughout.

After announcing Palin as the presumptive vice-presidential nominee, the McCain campaign received US$7 million in contributions in a single day

Quote
According to a Washington Post/ABC News survey published on September 9, 2008, John McCain had gained huge support among white women voters since the announcement;[13] he had not only surpassed the Democratic Party candidate Senator Barack Obama in white women voters, but also amassed a lead of five percentage points in the Gallup polls. John Zogby found that the effects of Palin's selection were helping the McCain ticket since "She has high favorability numbers, and has unified the Republican Party."

And I think after seeing Palin show off herself, people might have questioned McCain's choice.

At the time of her selection, and during her speech at the Convention that year, Palin seemed like a breath of fresh air and boosted the ticket for a bit.
But, really, 2008 was going to be a Democratic year, and frankly, I knew the minute we nominated McCain we were going to lose (did the GOP learn NOTHING from Dole vs. Clinton 12 years earlier??).  When you put old and grumpy up against young and charismatic, young and charismatic wins every time!

But Sarah Palin was not the joke in 2008 that she became in later years.  I do think, the more people saw of her, the less many of them liked her.  But initially, she did draw in some support. From what I have heard, though, she and McCain never really connected and grew more hostile towards one another as time went on.

i'm with alex and misfit , palin is why he lost so much support. my inlaws are a great example of this, SHE was the reason they abstained from voting.

While the left respected senator mccain and his family during and after his last days, the right has shamelessly attacked him after death.

When can honor him while scrutinizing his record.

He was the greatest flunky the various war lobbies ever had.

the interventions in Iraq, Syria and Libya were utterly devastating and empowered jihadists in ISIS and Al Queda who I personally see as our mortal enemy above all others.
