Title: Myra Breckenridge
Post by: kornula on September 07, 2018, 09:04:03 AM
About a month ago, I coerced my roommate and clone to watch Gore Vidal's "Myra Breckenridge"   For those unfamiliar with either, Mr. Vidal and his infamous novel: "Myra Breckenridge"   I highly recommend reading the book and watching the movie (just once is all anyone should stand)  Funny enough, this is one time the movie follows the novel closely.  This should tell you how "good" the book actually is.

Gore clearly had an axe to grind..and grind he did.  Attempting to chop away at not only Hollywood, but America at large.  When you go in writing any story in any format with an axe to grind, all you get is an ugly, clear cut patch of forest.  The movie has Rex Reed (mostly a famous film critic) who went it to get a sex change from John Caradine and turned into Raquel Welch.  There is a male rape scene that even as a gay man left me feeling sick.

The movie/story could have worked if it did not dwell on itself too much.  Its an all star cast; John Caradine, Raquel Welch, John Huston, Mae West, (a brief cameo by a young Tom Sellek)

Gore Vidal disavowed himself from the movie but not the novel ...which is odd, since the movie follows the book closely.

It's fun to watch once - maybe twice in your life.

Do not watch it alone.   Make sure to have plenty of friends to help you get through it - and don't forget the brain lubricant!

Myra Breckrenridge is not the only film, if I may say so, where we have a good cast in service of a bad movie.  Here are a baker's dozen more.

Good cast. Bad box office.
01. Casino Royale (1967)
02. Cleopatra (1963)
03. The Conqueror
04. The Egyptian
05. 1941
06. Rabbit Test
07. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
08. The Silver Chalice
09 Skidoo
10.  The Story of Mankind
11. The Swarm
12. When Time Ran Out
13, Won Ton Ton, the Dog Who Saved Hollywood

Most of these I have seen. Many of them I even liked. Thus, depending upon your tolerance or intolerance for bad filmmaking, these are worth seeing (IMHO) if only for their casts.

MYRA BRECKENRIDGE is not much fun, interesting, and ultimately un-recommendable...

Never seen it but I read about it recently in the book Fiasco, about famous Hollywood flops. It mentioned Myra Breckenridge and The Wild Party as examples of Racquel Welch's unsuccessful attempts to be taken "seriously" as an actress and not just a hot chick in a bikini.
