Title: The Special Relationship (2010)
Post by: ER on September 08, 2018, 11:30:22 AM
An inside retelling of the Blair-Clinton relationship?! Wow, what could go wrong with that? Sigh, almost everything except the performances of Michael Sheen and Helen "Aunt Polly" McCrory.

Being a fan of the history through which I have lived, here the late 1990s, I started off excited about this big budget HBO film then ended up thinking an ever-scowling, completely unpleasant Dennis Quaid needed more fiber in his diet and fast, and finally remembered why I miss Tony and Cherie Blair so much. (Ah, brave selfless leadership where art thou these days?)

A good opportunity to present an interesting idea was almost totally wasted here on penis jokes (Bill Clinton is 5 1/2 inches and has the circumference of a quarter? explains a few things), a debate on whether blowjobs are sex, and in humanizing Gerry Adams, who should have rated a couple blowjob jokes himself...just saying I've heard a few things, uh-kay?, and by the time the credits rolled (and rolled and rolled) I was actually mad about what a mess was made of a movie for which I held out high hopes.

As for a rating, well, on the MUZAK scale of -2 to +14, I'd rate The Special Relationship a 4.7. (For comparison sake I gave Showgirls a 2.6.)

Yup, pretty bad.
