I can't stand this guy.
All his movies-ugh. A whiny little nebbish.
Plus he's married to his adopted daughter.

Only seen a few of his films but they all basically seemed the same and he only ever appeared to play himself. Maybe I've just not watched enough of his stuff, but I am not a fan.

I never liked any of his movies. The single most overrated director ever and a despicable human being.

I was a huge fan of his movies back in the 70s. I saw a double feature of SLEEPER and EVERYTHING YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT SEX, BUT WERE AFRAID TO ASK at the drive-in. I also saw TAKE THE MONEY AND RUN at the drive-in (I think the 2nd feature was RETURN OF THE PINK PANTHER). I saw LOVE AND DEATH at the cinema. In the 80s I saw BROADWAY DANNY ROSE at the cinema (still one of my favorite comedies of all time).

As time went on and he got more serious and experimental, I became less of a fan. But I have about 7 or 8 of his movies on DVD and I watch them occasionally.

His book WITHOUT FEATHERS (which is a compilation of short magazine stories) is one of the funniest books I've ever read. Another of his books, GETTING EVEN, isn't as funny.

I can take him or leave him now . . . but I still enjoy his older movies now and then.

Untrue.  She is NOT his daughter and never was.  Plus, you don't know your ass from your elbow.

Yeah, ok Ron.  You're babbling; she was MIA FARROW's adopted daughter, not "under his care".  Right.  You don't like him.  As I wrote above, "...he may be despicable..."  I don't know him or have to live with him.  I like his movies.  'kay?

He's made so many movies dealing with so many different subject matters that it's probably unfair to sum up his career output as being any one thing, including all good or all bad. His films have ranged from brilliant (Match Point) to....less than brilliant, but all in all I think he is one of the more innovative and original film makers of his time.

You guys ever see the time Billy Graham was on his talk show in the '70s? They were cool to one another and both were witty. It's worth checking out.

He also gave us some great quips:

"I wish God would give me a sign he exists, like making a large deposit in my bank account."

And his comments on the fact it's our brain telling us all how great the brain is.

He's weird, idiosyncratic and I don't get his lifestyle and world view, but he has made some good movies and I hope he lives to make more before he's done.

I wouldn't go so far as to say all his movies were the same, as much as he was somehow able to insert the same one note character into a number of different movies... Which in a weird way, gave me an ADHD about casting a Woody impersonator as The Joker in a Batman parody, but that's for another thread.....

This one note character was addressed in a sketch in Loose Shoes (1980) & even when the scandal hit, an SNL sketch about pretty much devolved into a commentary about this one note character.

While all this was going on, the tabloids, & TV interviews with acquaintances were saying his private persona was far different from his public persona, most of which, I understand was revealed in the documentary Wild Man Blues (1997).

Of course, it wouldn't really be until the age of the internet, that people would be able  find & share that photo of a preteen Sun Yi sitting on Woody's lap at a baseball game from the 1970s that we would learn just how familiar (and possibly familial) the relation really was, blood or not.

I never liked him. He always creeped me out.

Something bad will happen to him now. Like maybe get chopped up and sold as chopped liver. Or use his head as a base ball.

Okay, he married SOON YI 21 years ago.  Fate sure takes a long time to chop or behead...  :lookingup:

Honestly, I think the only movie I've ever seen Woody Allen in was the 1967 spoof of "Casino Royale," which I hated.

Remember when "Annie Hall" beat out "Star Wars" for the Best Picture Oscar in 1978?

Naturally, anyone who knew anything about movies back then could've predicted that Woody the critical darling was going to win, but Star Wars crazed eight year old me was SUPER p**sed. I didn't even know who Woody Allen was at that time, but I was like, "Woody who? Eff that guy!" and as the years have gone by I've never felt particularly compelled to take back that statement, haha :D

THAT I can dig; I was annoyed CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND wasn't nominated way back then! 

A few of his early movies "Take the Money and run" "Sleeper" and ""Bananas" were too damned similar. However, he did learn to evolve.  I don't like all his movies. but you should check out "Crimes and Misdemeanors"  He totally goes off the beaten path with this film.

BTW;  you should read this story, his actual adopted son defends Woody and slams Mia.

I liked TtMaR too, it was an excellent satire of the  crime documentary movies.

Well, a lot of people can't stand him. For example, his Oscar winner Annie Hall, and at that time, considered one of his most popular films, had one of the lowest box office grosses up to time.

As for myself, I can stand him only in very small doses. So my 3 favorites of his films are . . .

What's Up, Tiger Lily
where he takes the Bond clone International Secret Police : Key of Keys and turns into a comedy about the search for the world's best egg salad recipe.

Casino Royale
in which he has a small role in a very big cast.

and the anthology film New York Stories
in which he did 1 of the 3 segments. The other 2 being done by Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola. His segment, at the time, being regarded somewhere in the middle. That is better than Coppola's, but worst than Scorsese's.

For decades the academy simply ignored SF films for non technical awards. They were  simply it ores and not  even considered for "serious" oscars.

And BTW,  speaking if a real p**ser,  planet of the apes won a special Oscar for makeup effects the same year 2001 was released. A. C.  Clarke wondered,  publicly and loudly,  if 2001 was not awarded for it's ape makeup because the people running the academy thought the hominids were  real apes and not actors.

I like more John Agar movies than I do Woody Allen movies.
That's just me.
I would rather watch the BRAIN FROM PLANET AROUS than ANNIE HALL.

Despite liking a couple highbrow woody Allen films I  agree with you.
