Title: MUMMY MOVIES
Post by: RCMerchant on October 08, 2018, 06:10:46 PM
What are your favorite Mummy movies?
Any movie that involves a mummy. This could be the old Boris Karloff the MUMMY (1932), Lon Chaney's Mummy movies from the 1940's the Hammer movies,  or the Mexican Mayan and Aztec Mummies, or the more recent ones.
Mine is Christopher Lee in the MUMMY (1959). Lee is fast, his eyes are alive, and it's got Peter Cushing!
After that, Universal's the MUMMY'S HAND (1940) with Tom Tyler. And of course Lon Chaney Jr. and the Aztec Mummy in FACE OF THE SCREAMING WEREWOLF (1959)!

That one with Christopher lee as the mummy who at the end gets blown away by a group of men armed with large rifles and shotguns and sinks into a swamp. It was just such a refreshing change of pace to see a monster be stopped by good old fashioned gunfire....

Yeah, that's my favorite too. the MUMMY (1959)
It was an updated version of all the 1940's movies ,except Lee moved fast! And was scarier.

TCM has a "monster of the month" and it's THE MUMMY.  I'm with RC, not a fan of that 1932 movie much, but they had on 3 "sequels" last night, one with TOM TYLER mummy (1940) and two with LON CHANEY mummy (1944):
THE MUMMY'S HAND
THE MUMMY'S GHOST
THE MUMMY'S CURSE

That last is COOL with the "25 years" dead woman crawls out of her mud swampy grave...  I did not remember that!!

(NOSFERATU was silent sunday)

Quick note: The shot the scene at a high frame rate to give her movements a smooth yet slow look.

I always loved watching the old Universal mummy movies.

And then there's the odd Paul Naschy version . . .

I saw the Mumy's hand last night. it was okay, but the TCM guy pointed out it in general wasn't a great tie for horror movies due to Hayes code. It's a cheaply made movie with some good performances

I don't agree with the TCM guy.
The photography isn't as great as in Karloff's the MUMMY (1932)- but that movie never fails to put me asleep. The MUMMY'S HAND (1940)
is fun to watch. The MUMMY'S HAND is not so much a horror movie as it is a monster movie.

Another thing about the MUMMY'S HAND- Tom Tyler wore black contact lenses in some close up scenes.f**king scary.
In the Lon Chaney Movies- the Mummy was a mask.
Jack Pierce did the make up for the Mummy in ALL the mummy movies- but the first 2 were the only ones he didn't use a mask. Universal's budget in the 40's wasn't what it was in the 30's. Horror movies were like westerns in the 1940's- B Movies.
Tom had his makeup applied by Jack Pierce like the original 1932 Mummy.

The Mummy (1959).

Actually watched it today.  It was the one I watched the most growing up.  I think TNT or TBS showed it frequently.  It is what I think of whenever I think of the Mummy.
