Title: Munich
Post by: ER on October 21, 2018, 09:58:54 AM
I have been thinking of the message of this 2006 movie of late, namely that if one sinks to the level of the thing he or she opposes, in what way is that person better than the object he reviles?

It's left me thinking about slippery slopes and becoming the monster you battle.

There's no real comparison between the Palestinian terrorists who murdered 11 Israelis athletes along with countless Israelis civilians on a regular basis and the government representing those victims launching an operation to execute them.

I'm a democrat and a moderate leftists but I support Israel 100%.

I am an enthusiastic supporter of Israel, but I do recognize that it has been a long war.  Hate begets hate; atrocity begets atrocity.
The Israelis, by and large, are a decent people who only want to be left alone.  But when you get targeted by hundreds of rockets a week, the temptation to take the gloves off can be overwhelming.

Overall, they have shown remarkable restraint.

Sorry, I was thinking about a different situation and using that movie's heavy-handedness as a metaphor. In real life Israel shows remarkable restraint in its dealings but the film makers set up a morality play that suited me as a reference to something about which I've been thinking. I agree with you both, Israel does well standing alone in a tough part of the global neighborhood and the movie, Munich, pandered to Israel's critics while still trying to play the good guy. It was a mess, but its theme has been in my thoughts.

Shalom.
