Title: Plastic Model Kits
Post by: RCMerchant on November 08, 2018, 05:13:10 PM
When I was a kid, I did lotsa model kits. I did all the Aurora monsters (except for the Bride of Frankenstein, because she dame out in the 60's, and wasn't continued into 1970, when I started buying them.)
I also had some WW2 bomber planes (American and German), and a Rat Phink model.
And a Barnabus Collins model, and a Vampirella model that came with a Frankenstein!

I'm going back into modeling- I just bought a Dracula's Dragster!

Good for you mate. I used to do model dinosaurs as a kid (Triceratops was my favourite). These days a lot of the tanks I use for wargaming are plastic kits.

I liked space ship model kits.

The first one I ever got was the Hulk. I was about 5 or 6 years old and I remember going to the store with my mother and grandmother to buy it.

Then I got all the Aurora monster models (except the Bride of Frankenstein, like RC). I used the optional glow-in-the-dark parts.

I also had a Dick Tracy model (like the one below, but mine wasn't painted).

I had this pirate model (it was part of a series of models that moved):

I also had a Klingon ship and a few others (tanks, planes, whatever).

I forgot all about the Pirates of the Caribbean kits! I had one as well, with the skeleton guy waving a sword!

I had many of them as a kid.  Including the snap together Prehistoric model kits.  My mother bought the Aurora CAVE display from a store that sold kits after I'd admired it (painted at the factory, complete with Neanderthal and Allosaurus) with cardboard display background of an exploding volcano.  Man, I wish I had that now!  I had most of the snap together Monster Scenes (like the Pain Parlor and Gruesome Goodies).  The Vampirella kit was one of the Monster Scenes as well as The Victim

I had the Vampy and Frankie from the Monster Scenes. Also a mad lab table that you could put Frankie on. I didn't have any of the others.

I also had the triceratops and T-Rex (with the drool hanging of his tounge!) snap together kits.
Boy, I would be all day in the winter gluing kits. That, and the oil paints and thinner to clean brushes..I would get pretty high.

I did some fighter jets and cars when I was kid, never any figures.  Uncle used to always paint or apply decals.  I am heavy handed and poor with certain fine movements.

Nice choice, RC would love to see when completed.

Oh yeah. I ain't gonna be buying no $100 or more kits. Hell-I'll go $30.
Back in the day, and Aurora 'Glow' monster kit was $1.50. We used old Paint -By-Number paint from my sisters kittens sets.
The glue we used teenagers would huff on purpose. We just got high because we made kits in the winter after we got some at Christmas.

I had all four of the easier to find monsters in mobiles kits - AURORA - except that one... I only had an original box for that one!  All four of those old model kits are now sold along with most of my monster toys.  I did not have KING KONG'S THRONESTER or GODZILLA'S GO CART

OK! I got the kit in the mail! I got a lot of Testors paint in the mail! I bought brushes and glue!
I have the Dracula figure painted. I did the small detail with colored marker.
I tinted Bela's lines in the face light blue. I didn't paint the face because the kit is already a sickly white.
It's coming out good!

I  had a just about every Jurassic Park when they came out.  The sculptures were pretty good, but I was a total novice when it came to painting them. Don't have them anymore.  Just been lost to time.

Now a days I think I'd like to learn some 3D printing.  I could give it another chance as well as making my own creations.

I think after Kong I'm gonna buy the Polar Lights repo of the BRide of Frankenstein. Tiana likes that movie. She asked me if they have a Bride kit- I said-"Yes!"
She bought me some brown, green and peach colored paint. Kong is gonna be black.  With red lips and nostrils. And, just for the hell of it, red pupils! Like he's p**sed!

I don't collect action figures.
I just started doing model kits a couple of months ago because I can't get out of the house . I had heart surgery, it's winter, and I live in the boonies.
It keeps me from drinking myself into the grave.
I collect books, that's about it.
So I started doing model kits. It's FUN. Remember that word-maybe from your childhood?
And I own my own house. I have a all my bills paid. I have a wife, kids and grandkids. I am not "poor."
What do YOU do?  In your spare time? Beyond finding a way to blame the world for bad s**t you brought on yourself.
Quit screaming out of a fishbowl.

Just Testors model paint. I used black paint on the face and wiped t off quickly-so it just remained in the details.I did it over with forest green, then wiped that off. I went over it all with a mix of dayglo green mixed with yellow. The rest I just used flat basic colors-like a comic book.

You might want to go to Walmart and look at the apple barrell color acrylic range. A neat trick is to paint the base a light color,  take a darker shade,  water it down a bit and bah it into the model recesses. It's called a wash.

I like to give it the look of an old 1960's comic book, just basic colors.

Ok,  still Walmart apple barrel colors are pretty cheap,  as little as a dollar or less for a large bottle and clean up with water.  Get a clear seal spray can to protect the pint job and yiu stollsafe money over testor's enamal.

Oh- I have some Wal-mart Apple Barrel colors. I have Forest green, brown and peach.
I bought 25 jars of Testors on ebay for 18 dollars when I first started doing kits again but yes-Apple Barrel is cheap and good quality too.
In fact Godzilla was done with Apple Barrel Forest Green!
I like Testors oily paint sometimes, because it's oily, and I don't want a bold color. Both good paints- but I use them for differant effects.

Well, the Mummy is done.
I made him the color of p**s in dirty snow!
I used black unstirred arylic and wiped it off with a paper towel. So the paint went into the creases of the model. It was a grey model to begin with, so that made things easier. Then I took an oily yellow and just brushed it over lighty. His one eye is green. I try to give them the look of an old comic book.
It was lotsa fun.

It all looks great except the cobra. Itcs a very unrealistic color and the color is so glaring it draws the eye away from an excellent paintjob on the mummy. Would recommend a more realistic,  subdued job on the cobra. Look up some pics of Egyptian cobras.

The base-I dropped the f**king thing taking it out of my room so Tiana could take a picture-so ah-wtf.

EDIT: Oh yeah- here's a picture of it! I gotta make blood shot lines in the eyeballs, though.
As you can see, by the close up of my sweater buttons, from a distance- you don't see how s**tty it really is.
