Title: Retro television holiday variety shows
Post by: The Burgomaster on November 13, 2018, 06:55:47 PM
I remember watching a lot of these (especially the Christmas shows) when I was a kid in the 1970s. They were full of holiday music, guest stars and comedy skits. Now, through the magic of DVD and blu-ray, I have amassed a decent collection of these old shows. Sure, most of them are pretty cheesy. But they bring back great memories. Some of the ones I own are:

I am going to try to find some of those on YouTube because I'm sure many were sweet in an old-fashioned way.

I think the last show of that type I remember was one Regis Philbin was on years ago in prime time and for some reason I burst out laughing at some scene he did with a boy on there. He started off telling the boy a story about old-fashioned Christmases "in the city," and the boy feigned complete ignorance about this subject, all news to him, learn something new every day, yet when Regis launched into song singing about the topic, suddenly the boy, who knew nothing about it ten seconds earlier and stood with a look of puzzled fascination on his face, telepathically became an expert and sang along with Regis, imparting all these details about it, in rhyme no less.

I found that so hilarious I couldn't stop laughing.

PS: Perry Como looks like he's been puffin' the wisdom weed up there.
