What are somethings that are really popular, but you just don't get it?
One for me is NASCAR. All around here folks got Nascar flags flying. I never understood that s**t. Almost as boring as golf.

Racing videogames are so much more fun to play than to watch the real thing. 
Daytona USA, the Cruisin' games and San Francisco Rush were so awesome!

I don't get how America became so spineless and Politically Correct.  Or how the lazy and "entitled" get whatever they want from the government.  Or how protesters feel it's okay to hold up traffic for any piddly cause.  Or how people want to jump all over cops whenever they shoot someone.

I don't get how anyone can believe in either the Christian  god or Allah.

Oh sure, it does happen.  But in (common) instances when someone raises their voice at a cop, doesn't listen to their instructions and advances towards them and after getting shot people cry that "they should have known he had such-and-such condition" or "they should have done more to de-escalate the situation" or whatever b.s... sounds like they deserved to be ventilated.

I also don't get when a passenger gets on a public bus and has to stand next to the driver and talk to them rather than sit down LIKE EVERYBODY ELSE.

Or why people bring their dogs into public business establishments and grocery stores.  And on that note, why people have to claim PTSD just so they can bring their pets everywhere.  I know it's a real thing but many people who say they have it don't.

 I sure don' t get how anyone could watch all the sharknado movies....

I use the bus often in Pretoria and there's one guy who did that until the driver slammed on the brakes and the guy landed on his head.  :buggedout: :wink:

Most adults who don't know me well find me a bit intense and angry - I've been told this many times - yet, children who are the most perceptive of all human beings don't find me scary at all. They're not scared of me, they have no reason to be and they like me for some unknown reason.  :question:

Trolls. I don't understand the appeal of pretending to believe something obnoxious just to watch people's reactions. Best I can come up with is it's an unsophisticated form of the prank, but some of these people's dedication to the "craft" is probably a mild form of mental illness.

I never really felt one way or the other about Menard. Sometimes I agreed with his positions, and sometimes he could get a bit too obnoxious. Didn't think he was a troll, though, I always felt he was being sincere.

Ditto on NASCAR. My father in law is a big fan, we've learned over the years to not even call him on "race day" cuz he won't pick up his phone.

I once commented to him that there was no reason to devote three hours of TV time to live NASCAR on weekends -- just show the first five laps, the last five laps, and any good crashes that happen in between, and you could get it out of the way in about an hour. He didn't think that was very funny. :D

...I never understood the whoop-de-doo about the Lord of the Rings films (or LOTR in general, for that matter). I saw the first movie, and while I admired it from a technical perspective, when it was over I shrugged and have never bothered to check out any of the follow ups.

Sports fans in general. You watch someone else doing something and then claim "We won".

People who rush off trains, get to the ticket barrier and then stop right in front of them to look for your ticket while preventing other people getting through. Normally it is old people who do this.

People whose only joy in life is making others unhappy. Equally, people who look to hurt those who have done nothing against them.

Yea, Harry Potter is another franchise that has passed me by entirely. My kids were never into it so we've never seen any of the films or read any of the books. (shrugs)

I remember when that one came along... momentarily amusing mainly 'cause of Menard.  Menard is my friend... haven't heard from him in years...

I loved the first LOTR and HARRY POTTER movies; did not read any of the books.  I tried TOLKIEN and was bored.  Them ROWLING are kind of hairy potty poop.  

I used to read STEPHEN KING and ANNE RICE and liked several of the books, but not all of their books (some are drivel).  I read all of GENE WOLF's Book of the New Sun series and found them wonderful... except the last (Urth of the New Sun... z'okay).  I am fond of mid 20th century SciFi... stories, books and movies.  I highly recommend INFERNO by LARRY NIVEN and JERRY POURNELLE... if faith and fantasy mixed interest you, it's superb.  I enjoy Star Trek, but don't take it seriously.  I haven't seen a good Monster movie in decades... or a good Ghost movie...

If you like mid-twentieth century science fiction, have you ever listened to an early 1950s radio series called X-Minus One? I think it might be the all-time best sci-fi series in any medium, of all time. I grew up listening to it on a local public FM station that ran a lot of golden age radio shows, and now I can hear them anytime on YouTube. I can lose myself in X-Minus One. (In so many ways this really is a good time to be alive, you know?)

A bunch of rich peolle decided they wanted to be even richer without actually doing more work, so they set of a machine made of smoke and mirrors,  lubricated with snake oil and powered by corruption,  to make themselves more money.

The stock market is a huge scam,  a massive ponzi scheme following the one armed bandit philosophy that let's rich peolle  play a really big,  everlasting game.  If they win money they keep it,  if they lose money it comes out of everyone elses's pockets.

And that's how the stock market works,  honey.

Dunno, I'd rather be alive in 2019 America than 1942 Leningrad, or 1346 in western Europe (know why?). Some times are better than others and we are lucky, lucky, lucky. Not one day goes by I don't reflect on that good fortune.

Also look up the word 'blessed' in a good commentary on KJB; it might help you understand post-Elizabethan English, which can be tangled and counter-intuitive.

In simplest terms, leaving much out, one purchases shares in a company. Of course one may also take a loss, it's risky.

There is more to it than that alone, but at its heart, that's the core concept. When more stocks are bought in a day than sold, that is when the market rises; when more shares are sold than bought, the market is said to have declined. I understand why other countries can't understand American gun laws. There are specific historical reasons for them. It's an extremely difficult process to amend the US Constitution; you can't do it with a simple majority vote.

Not entirely accurate; the Constitution was created by people who wanted a stronger government than the Articles of Confederation, which had given the government very little power to actually govern.

I remember a few incidents with the bus driver actually stopping the bus to tell people to turn off their cell phones. But this was a few years ago.
If you step in a transit bus these days you'll see rows of people typing, texting, watching videos and having (loud) conversations on their phones. Not only the passangers but the driver as well  :bouncegiggle:

Don't worry! Neither do I, and thru an investment club, I have invested in the stock market for years. What I do know is that last year, I earned a higher rate of return on my investment in the stock market, than I got from the money I have invested in the bank and/or city credit union, where I live. Of course, last year was a continuing bull market for the stock market. We will just have to see whether the bull market continues this year.

I know this isn't PC to say, but anyone so filled with self loathing that they would have their genitalia mutilated to resemble something they biologically are not and never will be strikes me as being profoundly mentally ill.
I don't understand why society is now all about enabling them.

People change their bodies all the time.

 A person genetically determined to have cancer will usually if possible have it removed or treated rather that live with his "natrual" condition. People genetically selected to have bad eyesight will use various artificial means to improve their vision, people genetically determined to be one hair color change it to another, etc.

It's a complex question, actually. Gender dysphoria a real phenomenon, however, and may be related to hormone imbalances/malfunctions in the womb, though medical science doesn't understand exactly what causes it. I know one and I sympathize while still feeling incredibly awkward around them. I don't know about "enabling" them, but my position is that they're harmless, and it's no business of mine what they do to their genitals as long as they aren't hurting me. Live and let live.

Apply the Golden Rule to transgender people. Does it start to make more sense?

One of my nephews is going through this at the moment. While I might not understand it completely given it is not something I have any personal experience of it doesn't mean I don't love or support him any less. I can only imagine just how tough it must be to go through something like this.

People who decide they have no gender, however, is beyond me. That I really don't get. If you want me to only use gender-neutral pronouns for you, the chances are it isn't going to happen.

I don't "get" it either, but I've met a couple, and yes, I feel really weird about it, squemish actually, but I don't think it's wrong, or they should be treated like second hand citizens.

I can identify with being 'different'. I'm 5'2". I was always the shortest person in the room. Unless an 8 year old was around.

Transgenderism is an example I'd not thought of, but it is the example of a thing "I don't get".  I've been acquainted with a few transgender people (even had one in my family) and if no one is harmed, a person's body is theirs to do with as they see fit.  Live and let live.  I don't need to relate to a person to protect their rights! 

I just can't get how anyone can honestly believe that a good person who isn't  "saved" by a religion actually deserves to suffer the same afterlife as Adolf hitler or Joseph Stalin.

FWIW, I have never let my inability to understand what's going on in their heads affect the way I treat people.

Not challenging your decency. I don't "get" what causes transgenderism. But I can see it's a real phenomenon. You said you didn't get why society "enables" them, which is a tougher question. I mean, what is the alternative to "enabling" them that still respects their dignity and autonomy? It's a fine line.


I "get" why people have a lot of beliefs I disagree with. I get Christians, Marxists, Muslims, radical feminists, flat earthers, Trumpers (this one is harder), libertarians, etc., without agreeing with them. It's tough to come up with something I really don't get.

But I don't get the prevalence of tattoos. I wonder if people who get a lot of them are actually masochists.

Why some people can't see that tolerance is not the same as acceptance, and that asking for acceptance sometimes infringes on another person's right to disagree.

I also don't get tamarind sauce, which makes me gag.

I agree with that principle, but I don't think it comes up very often. I'm having trouble thinking of a concrete example of where that might apply. I guess some trans people might insist (even obnoxiously) that you call them by their preferred gender, for example, but they don't have any power to infringe on your right to disagree and call them "sir." 

I think all people desire acceptance.  Tolerance is fine, but hardly warm and undetectable. 

For the life of me I can't understand why shaving cream still exists.  Why does anyone have liquid soap/body wash AND shaving cream?  All you  need is the liquid soap, you  put a dab in your palm,  lather it up,  rub it in your face (or whatever)  and shave. Plus if you use scented body wash it leaves a nice smell behind.  I just don't get why more people can't figure that out and still buy cans of shaving cream...  :question:

I never "got" what people see in "The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai." I revisited it last year and it still hasn't clicked so I've given up. 

This might step on some toes, but I don't get adults who take comic books seriously. I mean, I'll watch and enjoy the occasional Marvel (or even DC) movie, but I know it's shiny junk.

As a collectible, as a hobby, as art, as fun it's all cool.  I enjoy crap of all types, but take very little "seriously". 

I've said it before, but I don't understand people who emigrate to a different country then immediately set about trying to make their new country just like their old one rather than assimilating to their new homeland.  It's like, "Hey, if you liked your old country so much, why didn't you just STAY there?"

I'm expecting to retire in Mexico or Central America and I'm prepared for some people to not like me because I'm an outsider no matter what I do or how I try to fit in. I expect to hang out mostly with other expats.

I don't get some of the more extreme fetishes. I get some of the more questionable stuff, but I don't see the appeal to excrement, vomit, blood.

I'm an immigrant - from Zimbabwe to South Africa - and when I got here in 1987, I realized things were way different to what I was used to at home. So I thought, just go with it.

I have trouble understanding why some Americans get upset when someone speaks a language other than English in public. 

Back in the day my friend Mandy and I used to dress weirdly and go out in public and pretend to carry on running conversations in a gibberish language complete with wildly abnormal inflections and sweeping hand gestures, with wide innocent eyes and sometimes we'd walk up and ask people questions in that language while holding some embarrassing product in our hands. Great reactions.

For a long time we had "little italys" and "chinatowns" in alot  of of big cities. People tended to like their native languages,  foods, etc.  Their kids grew up speaking English and the old tongue,  and things went fairly ok.

I worked at Honee Bear for 30 years. 90% of the folks I worked with were Mexican. At least half were illegal.
I don't see folks who argue politics doing that job. So f**k people who berate the folks they hire, and deny citizenship.

Death Metal vocals irritate the crap outta me. I like guys who can sing (or at least shout convincingly). Too many bands sound like they got Cookie Monster on the mic. "WOOOOOOARRRRRRGH!"

My brother was big into the death metal scene when we were growing up so it's not like I'm not used to it. I even went to a handful of shows with him back in the day (Morbid Angel, Obituary, etc.) -- I can appreciate the insane musicianship but I can't tell ya how many bands I've heard that sounded great till the vocalist opened his mouth.

Black Metal is a whole 'nother planet. A lotta those dudes shouldn't be walking around loose. In that world, your band isn't "true" till you've desecrated a grave, set fire to a church, murdered at least one of your band mates, and eaten his liver.

Ever get cut and you don't feel a darn thing, then you notice you're bleeding and only then does it start to hurt? Weird, huh?

I once sliced my leg open as a kid running a race around a house under construction, and I brushed into this fresh concrete basement wall that had an edge like a razor. I felt the bump when I hit it in passing but kept running, and the other girls I was with starting freaking out and screaming and pointing. I looked down and a flap of skin about the size of a quarter was hanging off my calf, partly sheared in a sideways U shape, yet until then I didn't feel anything whatsoever. (Then it hurt, oh, yes, ma'am.)

In a bit of good luck, a cosmetic surgeon happened to be at the hospital and came down to the emergency room and stitched my leg so finely, putting in three stitches where most doctors would have used one, that I've sometimes challenged people to find where that place is, and most of them haven't been able to.

I think a lot of pain is what we make of it.

Early Norwegian Black Metal is insane. You had the band Mayhem living up to their name, the whole thing was a mess.
The vocalist "Dead" didn't get along with the guitarist "Euronymous". Dead shot himself and left a note stating that he wasn't from this world and to excuse the bloody mess. Euronymous, being the Satanic idiot that he was, didn't go to the police, instead he went and bought a disposable camera, took photos of Dead's suicide, and wanted to use it for their next album cover. Speaking of Euronymous, he was stabbed by a guy named Varg Vikerson. Varg killed him in "self defense". Varg stated that Euronymous wasn't paying him for his help in Mayhem, and confronted him. There's a documentary about Mayhem and early Norwegian Black Metal called Until The Light Takes Us.

As a movie collector I don't "get" streaming. It has no appeal to me whatsoever. I'm mainly interested in cult movies but whatever streaming services have to offer (not much) they don't warrant a subscription. I'm not interested in series, or most documentaries. If there's a documentary that I really want to see it's usually not available for streaming.
As for mainstream movies, I don't need to stream first to decide a purchase. I usually know what I want and what I want to own.

Quite honestly, I find more stuff to watch on youtube than I do on Netflix.

Frankly, I don't get streaming neither, but, it is apparently regarded by Hollywood as the wave of the future. The only major Hollywood studios who are not getting into streaming are Paramount and Sony Columbia

20th Century Fox was acquired by Disney to bulk up its streaming service Disney+ which will be out later this year.
Comcast/NBC/Universal will start up its own streaming service sometime next year or 2020, which may be why they bought Sky from Fox.
Waner Brothers was merged with Turner Entertainment, so AT&T could start its own streaming service.
And that is just the Hollywood etertainment companies.

The Silicon Valley tech companies are also starting their own streaming services.
Apple, seeing its profits from its products flatlining, has started its own streaming service just last month in March.
There is also Amazon which has Amazon Prime.
Hulu which is majority owned by Disney.
And, of course, there is Netflix.
And who knows who else, both now and in the future.

From my viewpoint, it is going to be an interesting time, especially, as thru an investment club, I own stock in several of the companies that have or will soon have a streaming service.

I wonder how many of these companies will fail. How many paid subscription services are people going to pay for? Will be interesting to see how many succeed.

They probably just got a list on rotate they play.  The classic rock station here seems to play the same dozen or so songs as well. I actually tried to call them once with a request (because, you know, I thought radio stations still do that) and I just kept getting a busy signal.

Probably the most posted movie title on social media in the last few weeks. I think people keep mentioning this stupid title simply because of the title.

Not seen the movie yet (like most people on social media mentioning the movie) but the plot doesn't sound intriguing to me.

It is a very different film from what you would expect. I found it... interesting I guess would be the best way to put it. It isn't the kind of fun B movie romp you might expect from the title.

Thing is, I expected anything but not a B-Movie. I've read a few reviews but I'm still not interested.

I really don't like the beatels or dislike them. There are a couple songs they did I like, mostly i'm just neutral on them.

The Beatles were a little "before my time" so although they have a few songs I enjoy and I respect their place in rock n roll history 'n' all that, they've never really been "my" thing.

I knew a guy in college who was an absolutely obsessed Beatle-maniac though. This dude took musical snobbery to a whole 'nother level. A "life" sentence also does not mean "until you die."  It's a set number of years.  I wish i could give you an exact number, but the law tends to vary there.  Even people doing life sentences are eligible for parole. 

Multiple life sentences are done to issue a person does not get out after such-and-so many years or on parole. 

They're basically stacked so the people can go "Okay, so you've served your sentences and are eligible for parole, but you still have served this other sentence so you still aren't allowed to leave."

For instance america used to use the "gold standard" that meant america's money was backed up by gold.  The value of a  nation's money  is also part based on itcs physical wealth and measured lartily by it's  annual GDP.

This crypto currency is based on...?  I don't understand. Basically computers run a program to discover the secret numbers that we're generated and "mine" them but they have no value,  they can't be used for anything,  building material , food, useful items, etc.

From what little I understand, I believe it's based on whatever is chosen. Like you can have a Bitcoin based on wheat, and then its value is determined by how well the wheat market is doing.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that's roughly how it works.

Bitcoin's value is based on 1) scarcity and 2) people's faith in its value. Anarchist types love it because they think it can free humanity from the "tyranny" of "fiat currency."  Speculators are jumping on it because they can make money because it's so volatile. That in itself pumps up the value. (Heck, I made several thousand dollars off it; I was lucky to sell it at the peak).

In theory it would allow people to exchange money electronically with very small transaction costs. It's not there yet, though.

The underlying blockchain technology is also innovative and people are thinking of new ways to implement it. I think Bitcoin itself is too inefficient to be useful in the long term, but some other cryptocurrency may well improve on it and find a use. Guessing which one it will be is a shot in the dark.

But,  however you define it, a gubmint would move to crush any real, effective crypto currency that allowed people to put a dollar out of government or corporate control. The rich don't  need it since they have the law written to let them keep their money which they get from the  work of the non rich and protect their privacy.  So a real crypto currency would only benefit the non rich and would therefore  be destroyed  by gubmint as it would be used to "fund terri'sm!  or "S'port drug lords! " and,  of course,  if all else fails we'd  be told cryotocurrencty must be banned "for the children! "

So honestly, any crypto currency that hasn't been banned is clearly not effective, as it it we're effective for real people  it would be either banned or regulated into uselessness and massive criminal penalties would be attached to its  use.

Normally I'm against orison for non violent offenses and think we have waaaay to many people in prisons,  especially for profit corporate prisons. But when I see this I can't help thinking that these people should be either jailed for a few years, or put in stocks in the public square for a couple weeks with a sign proclaiming their vileness. Itcs almost a pity sterilization isn't allowed in america for cases like this as these people should not be breeding,  but even so that's a direction we shouldn't go. I don't really want america to do that , but,  oh, cases like this seductively whisper to me,  calling me to the dark side.
