Title: Favorite BLAXPLOITATION movie
Post by: RCMerchant on January 08, 2019, 11:07:05 PM
I really have a true love for blaxploitation movies.
Some of the best movies of the 70's, IMHO.

My favorite is COFFY (1973) with Pam Grier.
She puts razor blades in her hair before she starts a fight with some sorry piece of s**t who gets blood all over the place!
She blows a pimps head off in a scene much like that in Romero's DAWN OF THE DEAD (1978)! It shows his head explode!
And that's only piece of part of it !
Great movie, with the always beautiful Pam Grier, who is my favorite actress of all time. ALL TIME.

Richard Pryor was in a few of these in the early part of his career, and he wasn't half bad.

Way he grew up, I'm told, & always looked way more natural than some of the 'stars' of these films!
Good thing he was dedicated to comedy, or else he could've been typecast.

Pam is very underrated in Tarintino's JACKIE BROWN, which I think is one of his best films.

Being this IS Bad Movies-! I have to mention-

WELCOME HOME BROTHER CHARLES (1973)
One of the most insane movies I have ever seen. I own it on some obscure VHS company.
His dick grows and strangles people he don't like!  :bouncegiggle:
None of it makes any sense whatsoever!  :drink:

Darkstown stutters.  Man,  I wonder if that was financed by the ku klux Klan!

There was a SA 'blaxploitation' film called Joe Bullet made many years ago: very controversial in its' day.

I like parts of SWEET SWEETBACK'S BADASSSS SONG a lot, but it gets old.

For pure cheesy fun, I think TNT JACKSON might be my fave. Sure, Jeannie Bell is just a fake Pam Grier, but that topless kung fu fight is amazing!

Also liked BLACK SHAMPOO...

I like JACKIE BROWN too... anything PAM GRIER I like.

BLACK SHAMPOO I bought on DVD. "He's a man!"  :bouncegiggle:

I've only recently begun exploring the blaxploitation genre in the past couple of years.

Pam Grier is the Queen, of course, but it's tough to decide between Foxy Brown or Coffy as my favorite Pam flick.

Someone mentioned TNT Jackson a few posts back, I just saw that one a couple of weeks ago, great fun.

I think my all time favorite, though, has gotta be Truck Turner with Isaac Hayes. Great cast, great action sequences, and a funk-tastic soundtrack. Plus, the pimp funeral scene in that movie is pretty much one of the best things ever.

TRUCK TURNER is a classic. The hospital massacre is pretty fantastic too!

SWEET SWEETBACK...ahhh...it's way too serious.

.SCREAM, BLACULA, SCREAM (1973) has Pam Grier and William Marshall! Blacula vs. Voodoo!

And William Marshall, who's deep Shakespearean voice demands attention, is a scary vampire!

I have a big collection of blaxploitation movies, but my favorite is probably the original SHAFT with Richard Roundtree. The worst is probably THE GUY FROM HARLEM (see my comments from back in 2006 here: http://www.badmovies.org/forum/index.php/topic,105004.0.html (http://www.badmovies.org/forum/index.php/topic,105004.0.html))

Others in my collection are:

* SUPERFLY (the original, of course)
* SHAFT'S BIG SCORE
* SHAFT IN AFRICA
* TRUCK TURNER (Isaac Hayes!)
* COFFY
* FRIDAY FOSTER
* SHEBA, BABY
* BUCKTOWN
* WELCOME HOME, BROTHER CHARLES
* BOSS (the DVD case doesn't use the original title with the "N" word)
* SWEET SWEETBACK'S BAADASSSSS SONG
* BLACK MAMA, WHITE MAMA (not strictly blaxploitation, but Pam Grier is in it)
* BLACK CAESAR
* HELL UP IN HARLEM
* CLEOPATRA JONES
* GET CHRISTIE LOVE! (The TV pilot film)
* BLACKENSTEIN
* BLACULA
* SCREAM BLACULA SCREAM
* DR. BLACK & MR. HYDE
* FOXY BROWN
* TROUBLE MAN
* BLACK GUNN
* BLACK CONNECTION
* BLACK SHAMPOO
* SLAUGHTER
* SLAUGHTER'S BIG RIP-OFF
* TAKE A HARD RIDE
* THAT MAN BOLT
* ONE DOWN, TWO TO GO
* THE MACK
* UPTOWN SATURDAY NIGHT
* LET'S DO IT AGAIN

. . . and probably another 5 or 10 I forgot to list.

I love 'em!

This thread is great because I've never really been into Blaxploitation films. The closest I've come is the trendy vestiges in Enter The Dragon (I met Jim Kelly as a convention a few years before his passing, what a cool cat), and the Blaxploitation parody Black Dynamite.

@RC - OMG this looks great! And there's a dude with a big afro and mustache that looks like Michael Jai White's character in Black Dynamite. I'd give you karma but for some reason no can karma you. Just watching that trailer shows where Black Dynamite was aiming, this is so cool.  :cheers:

@RC - I wish I had seen these movies before I met Jim Kelly, I could have asked him about them. Sigh. That intro is the BOMB.  :thumbup: :cheers:

I wonder if Michael Jai White ever met Jim Kelly and talked to him about his plans for Black Dynamite? I wonder if Jim Kelly ever saw Black Dynamite. Oh, the questions...

Speaking of blaxploitation movies,  i'm amazed that no one ever made one called "The shalolin spade".

Before anyone has an aneurism over that term it is a popular martial arts/kung Fu weapon.

Jeezus RC,  i'm surprised they never made a blaxploitation movie about a black martial artist who used a shalolin spade as his weapon and called the movie "The shaolin spade" as a joke.

I mean jeez,  we had "black belt Jones" for chrissake,  and the kung Fu seres was popular back then which out the whole shalolin thing in he media. I really canct believe they never made a blaxploitation movie called "the shalolin spade".

COFFY is one of my favorite movies of all time.  You can hear me singing the theme song from time to time ("Coffy baby, danger waits for you... for yooooooooou!"  My poster signed by Pam is the prize of my collection.

I am also a huge fan of Blacula, which is entirely due to William Marshall.  I don't think anyone else could have played that role with the right mix of camp and seriousness.  I was pretty disappointed with Scream Blacula Scream.

Of course, I am snob when it comes to classifying what a Blaxploitation film is.  I separate more experimental indie stuff, like Sweetback, Ganja and Hess, and even Abar, The First Black Superman from the stuff AIP was cranking out.  Abar is definitely not as good as the other two, but it's an interesting watch.
