Title: Cold Snowy Winter Movies
Post by: quabrot on January 29, 2019, 03:44:09 PM
Here in Chicagoland, we are under a half a foot of snow and temperatures are headed for record lows.  On cold days like these, I love watching cold movies.

Snowbeast is a favorite of mine, and I'm sure I've posted about it here in the past.  It's pretty much Jaws but at a ski resort, but there is a kind of charm to it.

I also like to revisit the MST3K version of The Day the Earth Froze, though I would love to see the original Russian version (which I now see is on YouTube).

I would probably put Frozen and Fargo on my list too.  Any other ideas?

The Thing.
...

Which version (1982 or 1951)?  I love them both, though 1951 is my all time favorite '50s SciFi.

I love SNOWBEAST !!!  Made for TV in 1977.   :teddyr:

YOU'LL LIKE MY MOTHER (1972) has PATTY DUKE snowed in with crazies...

THE SHINING   (1980)

Either or indeed both, although not the prequel. Lets just leave that one out.

Ice station zebra.

And I second horror express.

One to avoid is a MFTV bomb called "snow beast" starring bo svenson and a monster no more dangerous than a bear and not as scary looking.

Snow-clad westerns seem to be well above-par particularly "The Great Silence", "Day Of The Outlaw" and "Breakheart Pass".

Quabrot mentioned that SNOWBEAST was a favorite... in his first post when he started this thread.  I like it too.

I love both incarnations of The Thing.

There's a Norwegian (I think) slasher movie series called Cold Prey, about a bunch of college students hunted by a deformed brute at an old abandoned ski resort.  I caught the first one a while ago at my folk's house and found it a pretty good slasher flick.

You are correct a 3-film series with . . .
Cold Prey (2006)
Cold Prey 2 (2008)
Cold Prey III (2010)

The original title for all 3 films being Fritt Vilt, Fritt Vilt II, and Fritt Vilt III.

While there is no release date given for this one, there does appear to be an American remake, of this Norwegian film series, in the works.

TERROR IN THE MIDNIGHT SUN (1959)
Which was mutilated by Jerry Warren into ATTACK OF THE ANIMAL PEOPLE.
It's about a UFO dumping a giant yeti monster onto some hapless Laplanders. Kinda like the Thing, Nordic style.
The Jerry Warren Version has John Carradine inserts, which drags it way down. Don't get me wrong, I love Carradine, but the original has  much better flow. And mood.

Did anybody mention BLACK CHRISTMAS (1974) with OLIVIA HUSSEYSILENT NIGHT, BLOODY NIGHT (1972)?  Though both are Christmas Horrors, I think they both have a dark wintry snowy setting...  and they're both good!

I have a fondness for Snowbeast.  Sure, half the movie is people skiing and you barely see more than the monster’s arm, but... Actually, I am not sure why I like it.  I

Snow beast I really nefer liked. The creature was poorly done and not that dangerous seemingz it looked like a human could often outrun it and it usually killed by ambushing or attacking immobilized prey. The costume was not convincing at all and itcs intelligence seemed no better than a bear's even if it were that!  Attacking a hole building full of peolle indicated questionable intelligent  at best.

If they'd made the creature more intelligent, like having it set crude traps, stalk pretty carefully,  and even have people  wondering for half the movie if it were in fact a psychopathic human due to the intelligent  of its  actions that would have made the movie better.
