Title: In South Africa, there are odd things.
Post by: Trevor on May 09, 2019, 08:10:48 AM
A 'traffic light' is called a robot.
A car's trunk is called a boot.
A car's hood is called a bonnet.
A bathroom is a toilet or if crudeness is needed, a kak huis.  :buggedout:
We use the letter 'u' in words where American friends don't, such as humour and neighbour.
We call a theater a cinema.

Odd things:

We drive on the left side of the road.
Our car's steering wheels are on the right.
You cannot buy a TV set here without a licence.
Before 1994, you could not watch a movie in a cinema on a Sunday.

Other than the traffic light and the toilet, it is the same in the UK.

You think that's crazy?  Here in the US there are about 1.2 guns for every person.  Of course you can have .2 of a gun, because you are working on piecing something together so that makes sense.  But there are some people that have zero so the rest of us have to make up for them.  I own seven for example.

Yeah, it was about 1000.  While I'm really jealous, I imagine that those weren't legally acquired, and I'm glad they got busted.

So far I've just got my family covered, but I'll work on it for you.

As far as knives, I'd bet you do. I just have the normal kitchen set, a couple pocket knives, and a machete for working in the yard.

A car's trunk is called a boot.

This adds new meaning to the sentence, "I'd like to give that guy a boot in the ass."

So the UK also had a no-movies-on-Sunday law? Wow. Ours was under a act of Parliament called the "Sunday Observance Act".

A pick up truck is called a 'bakkie' [buh-kee]: everyone knows what you're on about if you say that word.

You cannot buy a TV set here without a licence.

Is that just a disguised tax?

Could you get your license revoked for reckless TV watching?

lol, i have 6 feet of magnetic strips in my kitchen, 4 feet is just knives. 1/2 of that is the"touch it and die" knives. partly because those are my specialty knives, and partly because they'll hurt you if you look at them wrong, they're that sharp. the other 2 feet is utensils like whips and tongs and mashers, and my bonesaw...that sounds weird, doesn't it? :D

the machete went with the other garden stuff to my friends homeless outreach program. it's getting serious use this spring, so much rain that people's back alleys are jungles!

You have whips in your kitchen? Sounds like that is either very kinky, or for use on anyone who goes near your knives.

And yes, I know that comment will have you calling me butthead.  :bouncegiggle:

I do have a bad habit of picking up nearby knives and doing tricks with them.

oh, you can play with my THROWING knives, just not the ones in the kitchen. those are in the closet somewhere, i need to wait for all the new neighbors to get moved in before i ask if they'd mind me setting up a target.
