Title: Something Weird Video DVDs
Post by: dcj2112 on June 01, 2019, 06:44:26 AM
I’ve been buying these things for nearly two decades now. Man, time flies.

The last one I watched was an oldie. Night of the Bloody Apes/Feast of Flesh. The first movie was a lot of ridiculous fun. The second was a barely feature length mystery that was very predictable and went by slooow.

Anyway, what ones do you folks have or are interested in?

I love Blood Freak so much. One of my favorites I’ve seen from them. They only thing I really don’t like is the dream reveal. Still, any movie featuring hippies plotting how to placate a killer turkey man is okay by me.

From what you have I also really want to se Godmonster of Indian Flats sometime. Hopefully, I can find it cheap enough sometime. Something Weird also has a Blu-ray that boasts a 4K transfer. I’m curious about that as I’m not sure if it is an actual 4K disc or just a regular Blu-ray with a better transfer than normal. It would be crazy to get an actual 4K from a company once known for selling bootleg VHS tapes with bad tracking.

I have   the MIGHTY GORGA and ONE MILLION AC/DC on dvd. I have NIGHT OF THE BLOODY APES, the GIRL AND THE GEEK, the WILD AND THE NAKED, and PSYCHED BY THE 4-D WITCH
on vhs by them though I bought in 1996!
I seem to have more Sinister Cinema tapes than Something Weird.

I love BLOOD FREAK and GODMONSTER too.

Haven't seen it, but the GODMONSTER Blu-ray is done by American Genre Film Archives and only licensed from Something Weird. AGFA really does restore old exploitation movies to the best version possible. They also reconstructed and restored Ed Wood's TAKE IT OUT IN TRADE, among others.

Any specific Sinister Cinema releases you’d recommend? I saw they had a $98 special and was interested in getting as many fun obscure movies as possible. As such I jumped right to their double feature section. I was disappointed to see that many of them contained at least one film that was public domain and appear on those budget release sets you always see like 50 Horror Classics. I don’t really care if they are superior versions of these movies. I’d rather see something new and preferably something from the 60s, 70s, or 80s with some blood.

Cool stuff! I just checked it out on Amazon and it looks like it is a regular Blu-ray, but with just a really great transfer. I’d pick it up if it wasn’t $20.

I’ll have to keep an eye out for it on eBay to see if I can get a lower price. It still amazes me how crazy some DVD prices are. Last year one of the top selling horror Blu-rays on Amazon was Maximum Overdrive selling for nearly $40! I didn’t want to see it when it was new!

the ASTOUNDING SHE MONSTER, MANIAC (1934), and WHITE ZOMBIE are my favs from Sinister. KILL,BABY KILL (1966) by Sinister is great-it's slightly washed out and has got all the clicks and pops of an old film reel, plus some cool trailers!
TNT JACKSON I highly endorse! Great Philipino blaxploitation junk with lotsa bad kung fu! Really washed out and jumpy- just like if I was at the old Strand!

I BURY THE LIVING
THE THIRTEENTH GUEST ...

...and if you don't know it and they've got it: CASTLE OF BLOOD (1964) aka DANZA MACABRE...  one of my all time favorites (with BARBARA STEELE).  It's up on YouTube so possibly in public domain.  I have that on DVD but I also have it on VHS and it might be Sinister Cinema...

...aka CASTLE OF TERROR...

I just noticed there is still a bunch I don’t have that are going for fairly cheap. Anyone have any recommendations? I’m looking to spend no more than $15 per purchase.

I got a couple more of these from Amazon. The Bummer/Johnny Firecloud Double feature and the Sharpshooter Triple Feature.

I only watched Bummer and Firecloud so far. The latter is pretty decent. Probably the most legitimately good thing David F. Friedman ever produced.

I’m in the process of moving and while getting some moving supplies from Amazon and to cope with the move I decided to treat myself to four more DVDs that should be coming soon.

I got...

Dracula The Dirty Old Man / Guess What Happened to Count Dracula
The Ghastly Ones / Seeds of Sin
Satanis: The Devil’s Mass / Sinthia/ The Devil’s Doll
Six Weird Noir B-Movies

All except the last one are currently under $10 on Amazon. Excited to see what weird stuff these things contain. With Satanis I will absolutely own more Kash Flagg than anyone ever needs to.

With October approaching I may dip into the Something Weird catalog again. Although I’ve watched a lot of the horror they’ve released on conventional DVDs. So much new to see unless I hunt for the super rare and hard to find ones or start picking up their DVD-Rs.

Although I still need to check out the Andy Milligan Double feature they have. I own it but just haven’t watched it yet.

Also, pardon the thread bump but I was curious if anyone knew how often Something Weird was still putting out new titles? It seems they’ve mostly released what they got. The exception is they still have new Blu-rays coming out. However those look more like AGFA releases that SWV just gave them the permission to use their materials for. I’m highly interested in those releases but too pricey at the moment for my liking.

SW's founder, Mike Vraney, died in 2014 and I doubt they will be putting out any more new DVDs.

Oh yes I knew all about that. But his wife is still running the company and the guy who directed Basket Case has always done a lot of work for them. For DVD (rather than DVD-r or the AGFA Blu-ray releases) I think you my be right. The newest DVD I can recall is that Weird-Noir release I posted about from 2012. It is very different from some other SWV DVDs. It is just six obscure film noirs spread across two discs. There aren’t any crazy extras like most other sets have and it doesn’t even include the SWV Classic DVD intro. Perhaps they were trying something new with the intention to make more then the DVD didn’t sell well, DVD sales in general went down, and Mike died so any future releases were abandoned.

For those who don’t know Amazon is currently selling some of the old rare Something Weird Image DVDs as manufactured on demand DVD-Rs. Since the picture quality was not that great on some of these anyway, they may be worth a look :)

I recently got The Wild Wild World of Jayne Mansfield / The Labyrinth of Sex and Alice in Acid Land / Smoke and Flesh for under $8 for each disc. The only thing that stinks is Alice in Acid Land is apparently edited (though the original DVD was too).

I received an e-mail from SW a month or two ago and they said they would also stop producing DVD-Rs by the end of this year. I think thry will continue to sell digital downloads, though.

Just saw that Kino has now teamed up with Something Weird to release double features on Blu-ray. Most obvious/popular titles, it looks like, though I'm surprised they'd slap their name on CHILD BRIDE.

Awesome stuff!

Coincidentally I just had two Something Weird titles arrive in the mail today! I got Karate: The Hand of Death and The Trial of Lee Harvey Oswald/The Other Side of Bonnie and Clyde. Both are a steal at under $10 on eBay! Amazon has them too but the ones selling on there usually end up being DVDRs where as these are regular DVDs.

Karate: The Hand of Death might not be a great movie but the bonus feature is 50 martial arts trailers!

I’ll probably wait a while before I dive into these. I just finished my 12 movie Andy Sidaris set and am surprised it didn’t melt my brain. I need some good stuff to cleanse my pallet.

I lucked out and won auctions for a total of SIX out of print Something Weird DVDs  :drink:

Delivered today were...

Death Curse of Tartu / Sting of Death
The Thirsty Dead / Swamp of the Ravens
Indecent Desires / My Brother’s Wife

I got the others from a different seller so still have to wait for those to get delivered. But I’m probably more excited for those! Coming soon are:

The Mad Butcher
Axe
When Women Played Ding Dong / 50,000 B.C. (Before Clothing)

I’m always more a fan of the horror Something Weird stuff rather than the exploitation. So since I got a pretty good haul of horror stuff I hadn’t captured yet I’m quite excited  :bouncegiggle:

Haha reminds me of when American Movie Classics played Danger: Diabolik years ago. All I could think is, “It’s not American, it’s not a classic, and it’s barely a movie.”

the death curse of tartu DVD has amazing an commentary track. they shot the movie in the Florida swamps which are now billion dollar properties. the director told the actors water moccasins would leave them alone because they were afraid of people which isn't true at all. Sting of Death print is really nice

Is Axe the southern horror one? really good movie

Yes, that’s the Axe you’re thinking of

I’m really looking forward to the commentary too! Really I don’t think I’ve ever heard a bad commentary on a Something Weird release. Even on the Trial of Lee Harvey Oswald / The Other Side of Bonnie and Clyde which might be the blandest release I’ve seen from them, the director does a great job on commentary. I just wish they all had that feature and Mike recorded more before he passed.

Along with the massive Herschell Gordon Lewis box set I got, I got a bundle more of SWV DVDs. And while not SWV related I also got Boris Karloff’s Thriller Complete Series on DVD. I just mention that one because it’s a really good show but that set used to sell for over $100. It recently went down to $50 from a reputable seller on eBay. I’ve seen it selling for even less, but can’t say for sure those aren’t bootlegs since eBay can be bad about policing that stuff.

Anyway, the SWV DVDs I got were part of an auction. They’ll probably be the last DVDs I buy for my personal collection until next year. I’ve got a bunch this year lol.

Today I watched the only 1960’s nudie cutie musical double feature that may be possible Sinderella and the Golden Bra and Goldilocks and the Three Bares.

Despite the titles as with a lot of 1960’s cuties they are incredibly tame by today’s standards. You see a few boobs, a few butts, and that’s it. No one hangs dong or anything. In fact I don’t even think Sinderella and the Golden Bra even shows butts!

Sinderella and the Golden Bra is probably the superior film. The picture and sound quality are both pretty bad on this print though. Not sure if a better one exist. It’s pretty much just a straight re-telling of the Sinderella tale except...you guessed it! Instead of a shoe, a bra is left behind instead. So the prince goes door to door asking maidens to whip out their boobs and try on the bra. Throughout the movie there are a lot of songs too. They’re actually better than you’d expect and kind of catchy.

By contrast Goldilocks and the Three Bares has nothing to do with the classic tale. Instead it’s a Herschell Gordon Lewis joint. I heard when this was still considered a lost film an interviewee once told Lewis he hoped it would turn up. Lewis said he hoped it didn’t!

Goldilocks actually isn’t too bad by HGL standards. The plot revolves around a singer who starts up a relationship with a real uptight PR person. The reason it is revealed that the PR woman comes off as so uptight is because she is trying to keep a secret. The secret is...you guessed it! She’s a nudist!

Goldilocks also has a bunch of songs but they don’t tie into the plot as well as in Sinderella and are just done in concerts throughout the movie since two of the characters play musicians. On the commentary producer David F. Friedman even called them horrible.

Not sure which SWV DVD I’ll dive into next. I’m planning to hold off on the horror ones until October.
