Title: Musicians as actors. Post by: RCMerchant on June 15, 2019, 09:31:55 PM Why do some musicians think they can act? Some can, like Frank Sinatra...but Bob Dylan?

Iggy Pop, Tom Waits, Jack & Meg White, GZA and RZA not a film I love, but all the above turn out to be really good actors. Title: Re: Musicians as actors. Which I didn't like. And A LONG DAY'S NIGHT (1964). Which Is...ok. MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR (1967)-Ugh! The only Beatles movie I like is the YELLOW SUBMARINE (1968) and they don't even do the voices! They only appear briefly at the very end. And the only reason I like that one is because I saw it as a kid at the theater in 1968. I was young- it was a cartoon! Title: Re: Musicians as actors. Powell on June 16, 2019, 03:59:45 PM David Bowie was a very good actor. THE MAN WHO FELL FROM THE SKY, LABYRITH, THE HUNGER...
Tom Waits has also put out some good work, usually in small eccentric character roles. He did a great job in his segment of THE BALLAD OF BUSTER SCRUGGS. Title: Re: Musicians as actors. THE MAN WHO FELL FROM THE SKY, LABYRITH, THE HUNGER... ... Are my brain farts catching? Y'mean THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH ? Title: Re: Musicians as actors. Post by: Archivist on June 16, 2019, 10:49:37 PM Hong Kong cinema has a notable movement from actors to singers or singers to actors. Popular actors like Andy Lau, Aaron Kwok, Nicholas Tse and Ekin Cheng are some examples. Aaron Kwok, I believe, started as a dancer for another pop singer and made it as both a singer and actor. Andy Lau has played to hundreds of thousands, as did the late Leon Lai.
It's almost unheard of for a Western singer to have a very successful film and music career, and they if they make the crossover, they tend to concentrate on one at the expense of the other. Andy Lau has maintained a huge pop career alongside appearing in dozens of films. Title: Re: Musicians as actors. Ice T, Ice Cube, Vanilla Ice... Title: Re: Musicians as actors. Post by: Trevor on June 21, 2019, 03:17:12 AM There was a South African singer named Ge [Ghey] Korsten who starred in a number of films in the 1960s and 1970s like The Kruger Millions, Hear My Song and others. He wasn't much of an actor but he sang very well and had a good on screen presence.

Post by: FatFreddysCat on June 21, 2019, 10:41:19 AM Roger Daltrey of the Who actually has a number of legit acting credits, I wonder how he got talked into taking the bad-guy role in this '90s turkey.

Johnny Rotton was in a movie with Harvey Keitel. Iggy Pop did the CROW 2. Elvis did some stinkers. Roy Orbinson did FASTEST GUITAR IN THE WEST. Dolly did some comedies. Of course Bing Crosby. A pre-Chili Pepper Flea did the excellent SUBURBIA (1983).

A pretty dam good movie, I think! (https://i.imgur.com/DpAKEc2.jpg) (https://lunapic.com) Title: Re: Musicians as actors. Post by: BoyScoutKevin on July 07, 2019, 03:40:25 PM How did you know what I was thinking? On the earlier post of actors who also sang, I was thinking to myself of singers who also acted. And here are some of them, excluding those already mentioned, and those who appeared in musicals.
Singers who morphed into actors--more or less Alan Arkin -- Bing Crosby -- Bobby Vinton -- Fabian (who became Fabian Forte, when he went into acting) -- and Rudy Vallee. Groups and Duos The Beach Boys -- Donny and Marie Osmond -- Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello -- Sonny and Cher -- and The Spice Girls. Cher also had a solo acting career., And then there was . . . who both acted and sang Art Garfunkle -- Elton John -- Jim Nabors -- Kenny Rogers -- Keith Richards -- Kris Kristofferson -- Little Richard -- Lulu -- Pat Boone -- and Willie Nelson. And I am sure there are many others, I have failed to mention. |
